1. You should probably mention that Lite Outdoors is in Lethbridge, AB, Canada. I've purchased from them before. 2. You can do the 1st roll the titanium chimney just by yourself if you use a 2" foam pool noodle. 3. The spark arrestor at the lower level is a great idea to trap the burning embers before going up the chimney. 4. The addition of the replaceable baffle is even a better idea to extend the heat path within the stove and thus preventing getting the embers and creosote from getting up into the chimney.

Using a baffle prevents sparks and you do not need the little spark screens. Lite Outdoors is EXCELLENT. I have the XL as a back-up and two Bereg stove. HOURRA.

Nice! The baffle does reduce the amount of sparks but doesn't completely eliminate them, that's why I use the spark arrestor too.

I really wish I would have come across this video sooner. I have the winnerwell fast fold. If I would have put the spark arrestor and baffle on in the first place I wouldn’t have multiple burn holes in my tent. Love the video! Golden information here. Instant subscribe. Now I’ll have to see about patching the tent up, Or maybe buy another tent haha any recommendations? I currently have the luxe hiking mini peak XL I love the design but to be honest I’m extremely disappointed in the build quality. popped seams and loose threads all over the place… thanks in advance! Looking forward to scrolling your channel for more tips!!

Oh man, that's too bad about your tent. But it happens sometimes. I have heard Luxe quality is a gamble. I got lucky with mine. Trying to find good quality at a fair price can be challenging. I just bought some Pomoly gear to try out this winter. Looks nice so far but just got it, so I haven't even set the tent up yet.

Do a long term review of both of these stoves. My t brick mini warped pretty good after 6 days of full on burning. Now it won’t go back together. I honestly don’t think these Ti stoves were meant for hard use, nor were they meant to last. Big chunk of change for a disposable item, I’m definitely not impressed with them,,,
@SFARCO

Man that's too bad. I have had my winnerwell for about 5 years now. It is warped but once it is all locked in place it squares itself up. The pomoly is my friends stove, he hasn't used it as much yet. I know the baffle definitely prolongs the life of these stoves, and I have been using the baffle since I got the stove.

Most pomoly stoves use 1mm titanium sheets, but their light weight models are 0.6mm. Personally I don't think the sacrifice is worth it for saving a small amount of weight. To me, by using a stove you are already by definition not going 'light weight camping', so might as well use the 1mm. And as Sfarco said, once it locks in place it's all good. I appreciate it's probably easy for me to say 'if you want lightweight, forego the tent stove' as I live in a very mild weathered country.

I'm so glad I happened upon your video. Nice job with the comparison. A couple of questions if you don't mind: What model Pomoly is that? It looks like a Perspective. I have the Nortent Gamme 4 tent and it is 5 feet 4 inches in height. How much pipe would you recommend to extend out the top? Is a couple feet enough or do you think more is better? Last question! Which of the two stoves do you like better in terms of quality? Thank you again. Great video.
@SFARCO
@SFARCO 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes it is the perspective, sorry I forgot to mention it in the video. For most tents 1 to 2 feet above the tent height is plenty if you have a good baffle and spark arrestor to reduce sparks. There is never a guarantee against all sparks but my tent has been hole free. Too much pipe can be bad because of wind or other crumple factors. Both stoves are well made and will last a long time. The winnerwell will warp more due to not having the reinforced ribs like the pomoly, but squares up when locked together. But the winnerwell is half the weight. So if you don't mind the extra weight the and the warping bothers you get the pomoly. But if they have a version with a 3 inch pipe I would recommend that because the smaller diameter can prevent the stove from burning as hot. And as I mentioned in the video the baffle will extend the life of both your stove and pipe.
@___HH___
@___HH___ 2 жыл бұрын
@@SFARCO I appreciate your reply very much. I'm trying to decide which stove to buy and I'll admit I've been a little concerned about the smaller diameter of the Pomoly pipe. (I don't think they have a larger pipe available.) So, a couple feet above the tent should be adequate with a good baffle. Seems reasonable. Thank you again and best of luck to you with your excellent channel.

I hear you, it's not for everyone. But if compactness is a factor, then you can't get smaller than this. So it's great if plan on backpacking or have a fold up stove and can't store pipes in the stove. I will say some are flimsier than others, liteoutdoors.com sells good titanium foil. And once it is heat set, then it is really easy to setup and breakdown.

Winnerwell now sells a PLUS version of their folding stove and it looks awesome. They now have a nesting pipe instead of the rolling one. It's not taking much more space so that's great. I might pick it up.

Just got the winnerwell fastfold. Would you say that for the first burn i would not want to have a baffle in it? Any tips for first burn other than gloves when rolling the pipe? Should I really super fire it and get the whole thing glowing, or just go nice and easy for first time? Any tips for first burn and/or care would be greatly appreciated, this thing is very expensive. Thanks for these great videos, they have helped me out a LOT

You don't want to go too hot. Especially if you are doing the burn in with the baffle. If you want to do a quick burn in to heat set the pipe, then do it without the baffle so the heat reaches the pipe faster. But if you plan on doing a long burn in, go a head and use the baffle. Glad to help!

It's called Reflectix. Doesn't offer a lot of insulation by itself. My thought was that by creating an air gap between the exterior wall and the Reflectix, it would insulate a little better.

Could you do a test on this comparing boil times with and without baffle in use? I initially thought that maybe the baffle would slow boil times down for a pot on top then I thought it probably helps actually spread the heat out before it leaves making overall better contact with any properly flat bottomed pots, so now I don't know in theory even which is better. I have been looking at the ultralight winnerwell fast fold and am enjoying all these tips. Heres another thought/question though. If you could, wouldn't you be better to heat set the pipe after careful rolling on top of a long log fire? Versus heating both sides separately??? I definitely plan on getting that spark arrestor for the bottom, and a baffle, I plan to use this in a modified dd xl ul tarp in the tall tipi set up, with a removable stitched doorway thing with the stove jack on one side of it, and maybe some kind of magnets to hold it to the other side. Have you heard of any work arounds on the ultralight to reverse the pipe side? Know anything about adding titanium rivets and latches or any thoughts on that?
@SFARCO
@SFARCO 9 ай бұрын
As far cooking goes. It creates dual heat zones. As your stove gets hot, the area that has the baffle won't glow red hot, but there will be a defined line where the baffle ends that glows when hot enough. There, your stove top will be hotter than the baffle section, creating your dual heat zones. So what you can do is make a shorter baffle, so your hot cooking zone is a similar size to your low heat cooking zone. Hope that makes sense. As far as heat setting, I like to do it on the stove so you don't accidentally heat set any wrinkles, creases, or dents. Can't say I have seen ant stove jack reversals on that tent. What are you trying to accomplish with extra rivets and latches?
@8thsinner
@8thsinner 9 ай бұрын
@@SFARCO There was a comment on one of your videos, may have been this one, saying the ultra light model cannot be locked into reversing the pipe placement, I can't verify it as I am only researching still but I thought maybe since you made these few vids that you had seen a work around. The only thing I can think of is to add your own new latches to it..hence pivots thinking...however I don't actually know why it can't be reversed only that someone has said you can't.. And yes your shorter baffle makes sense. With the long baffle in place though, does that reduce the temperature enough that you can't use it for cooking? or is it less ideal just for fast boils...?
@SFARCO
@SFARCO 9 ай бұрын
@8thsinner Oh yes, I remember now. That stove has support ribs on the underside of the top, and they line up with notches in the stove body. When you flip the top around, the ribs no longer line up with the notches. If I am remembering correctly. So you might be able to make extra notches so the top is reversible. As far as boil times, I'm sure it's probably not as fast with the long baffle, but if you keep you pot towards the hot end it will still boil pretty quick.
@8thsinner
@8thsinner 9 ай бұрын
@@SFARCO I didn't think the winnerwell had any supports, I thought that was the pomoly's that did but okay, so yeah would have to make new latches or something to pull that off..not impossible maybe. Thanks for the input.

@@8thsinnerMy winnerwell doesn't have any supports. I'm trying to look into it to refresh my memory, but I don't see the UL version on their site anymore. Just the original and the XL. It may have been the latch position is no longer symmetrical. If I find it, I'll reply with an answer. I swear they had a smaller version for a moment.

Awesome comparison. My winnerwell fastfold is on the way. Have you come up with any nifty pipe protector ideas to put over that very vulnerable pipe part attached to the top when hiking? I was thinking maybe something like an empty soup can? I did land on the fastfold over all other options for weight and ease of setup, but that critical piece practically begging to be damaged is a massive design flaw in my opinion, I'm really surprised they haven't re-engineered that. When you say the LO foil is superior, is that a thickness thing or it just seems to be better metal purity? I can't wait to do my first burn, petty excited but also nervous. I've seen a lot of comments about the chimney crumpling, I'm not sure how to tie down nice and tight but without pressing it down into the stovetop too hard, don't want it heating up and crumpling/denting. I suppose I could trim off if that happens, but at these prices every mm is precious. Thanks for showing us how to do that baffle, that's an excellent upgrade to the fastfold
@SFARCO
@SFARCO 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The foil from LO is more rigid, probably slightly thicker. As far as travel, I have had any issues. Just don't be overly rough, and just pad with some clothes. That works for me. Unless it's windy you don't need to tie the guy line to the pipe, your stove jack will be plenty of stability on its own. If you are using the guy lines, then don't make too tight. If you feel it could crumple then it's too tight.

With the baffle adjusted for each position, do you notice a difference between putting the stovepipe in the front vs the back?
@SFARCO
@SFARCO 2 жыл бұрын
Pipe front vs back will primarily be your preference. However starting the fire with the pipe in front will be easier and create a draft quicker. Even a small flame will heat up a pocket of air above the baffle, right under the pipe, almost instantly creating a draft.
@OneclickOutside

Careful putting that screen above the damper!! When you close the damper for a slow burn, it won’t burn hot enough to get that screen glowing red and self clean. I had big trouble waking up in the middle of the night where it looked like tar oozing out because it clogged up with creosote. It was shocking to see his bad it got. I could hear it bubbling out. The screen really needs to be inside of the firebox somehow, below the damper. There’s no good way to attach it down there, and it’s also easy to knock out of place when loading wood if you do wedge one in there.

I haven't seen that stove in person but it looks like a decent stove. One thing to consider is that it has a removable bottom instead of top so you can't use the stove as an open top fire pit.
