Moreau is also inspired by gothic horror literature. The most direct and obvious reference is to the H.G. Well's novel, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and the character of Doctor Moreau himself. The in-game Moreau was implied to be a doctor before his mutation. His mutated form may have been inspired by the fictional doctor's work as well, creating animal-human hybrids.

@@Dragnarok1 Well Lady Dimitrescu does take a lot of similar elements from Dracula, who helped perpetuate the trope of vampires being sexy (did a cultural analysis paper on it, it got me an A :D). Most notably are: the blood drinking, the aristocratic social status, and the three other women in the castle (Dracula's brides/her daughters).

The Kappa connection that spawned in my head was how you actually fight Moreau, by emptying his pool of water, turning it into an actual fight... just like how you'd weaken a Kappa by making it spill water from the top of its head.

Not to mention his hump looks like a shell when he has his cloak on. And his headpiece looks like the head cup of the Kappa with it being damn near flat on his head. So yeah I think it's a pretty great modern interpretation.

Was gonna type this myself. His hump is the shell, his skin is almost a greenish hue, his bald on top with a crown of black hair on the sides, his large lips arent just fishy but could be seen as a beak replacement, has the webbed hands, and is a strong fighter despite his appearance would suggest upon meeting him. All in all, very kappa like. Not Tetranadon levels, but still very much so.

There's the childish crown he wears along with his cape and his massive baldness reminiscent to the Kappa's water-dish. Additionally, during the actual fight with Moreau, His mutated form can become invulnerable by standing upright on two of his hindlegs, only becoming vulnerable again if you manage to make him fall down, similar to how Kappas become vulnerable if you manage to make them bow.

I was thinking the same thing! That his crown looks like a Kappa's water dish and that he seems to be bald... or balding. He may be a disgusting creature, but I like this morbid interpretation of the 'kappa'. It's a lot more creeper then the adorable turtle-like kappa we see in Japan today.

Pretty sure Moreau has some Lovecraft DNA in it. The derlict fishing village with weird fish-monster-people seems like an allusion to Shadow Over Innsmouth. I also think his other form being covered in eyes may be inspired by Bloodborne, which equated having multiple eyes with the Lovecraft idea of having more insight into cosmic horrors.

While the folklore references are great, I also find Moreau's crown kinda strikes a similar look to Kappa crowns, or rather the bowl holding water giving them life. It's not one-to-one but seems to carry inspiration in appearance at the least.

From what I get from this video, the lords seem to be a fusion of western monsters and yokai. Like Lady D is Elizabeth Bathory and Hasshaku sama. Moreau is...well a combination of Dr Moreau and a kappa/mizuchi with a dash of lovecraft's deep ones. It's a fascinating mix.

Oh man, I would so watch an urban fantasy series about a traditional matchmaker company that arranged auspicious dates between proper-form youkai longing to join the modern world and human men and women who could sponsor them for citizenship. A proper nekomata with a handkerchief on her head demurely trying to win the favor of an uptight salaryman, or a really out of touch mountain dwelling monastic crow tengu absolutely lost in modern society and being led around by a Harajuku girl. That would be so good.

Oh boy, so though some kappa is present in his design, that information is mainly just a footnote at the very end of his information. Moreau’s design, his segment, his monster form, hell, even how he’s dressed is heavily based off of the novella: The Shadow over Innsmouth by Howard Philips Lovecraft! The story is of a man who travels to a village that suffered from a disease in the past and is filled with hyper religious “people” who worship a powerful entity. That was a simplified synopsis of TSoI, but this EXACT description can be applied to the plot of resi village, but where the other lesser villains cut there ties with innsmouth there, moreau wares his on his sleeve! POINTS: •Moreau’s design perfectly matches the deep ones hybrids, (I’ll just be calling them deep ones for simplicity sake.) fish people who are the religious inhabitants as mentioned prior, they are born indistinguishable from humans, but as they age there appearance grows more and more grotesque and sickly until becoming fish/human hybrids. One such individual is Barnabas “old man” marsh, an elderly deep one who is nearing his transformation and achieves such near the end of the story. •Moreau’s monster form bares great resemblance to Father Dagon, the being mentioned in the brief synopsis above. (Dagon is a great old one, an obscenely powerful cosmic god along the likes of hastur the king in yellow, and Cthulhu, who needs no introduction!) Dagon is described as a fishlike humanlike monster of vast proportions, and is called FATHER, like how Martha has MOTHER in her name. The fact that moreau transforms into a fish monster also ties back to the previous point with . •The segment where you face Moreau himself takes place in a fishing village that allegedly suffered from a mysterious disease, need i say anything more? •Though brief, there is a crown in TSoI, one that seemingly hold great significance to the marsh family, and Moreau wares a crown •Moreau’s walking animation matches the description of the movement of the deep ones •Moreau is fanatically devoted to Martha’s cult, and if you’ve played the game, you know exactly what’s at the center of said cult! So that’s my presentation on the parallel’s between Moreau and The Shadow over Innsmouth, I hope you found this as entertaining as it was educational. And gaijin, in the off chance you read this, it would have been optimal if you briefly mentioned the lovecraftian roots. A footnote… if you will.

Something I noticed about the connection between Salvatore Moreau and the Ehime story about the doctor and the kappa. In RE7 lore, Salvatore may have come from a family of doctors or had been a doctor himself pre-transformation as notes about his experiments with the Cadou parasite on villagers can be found in a location labeled “Moreau’s Clinic”. This factoid about Moreau being a doctor, using special methods to mutate the villagers into lycans using the Cadou and wolf’s blood (much like how the doctor in the folktale used special medicine to heal the kappa’s arm), and his mutated form being inspired by a kappa could be a faint nod to that story. Idk just a theory I came up with on the spot. What do you all think?

Moreau's grotesque fish like appearance might be based on the Deep Ones in the Shadow over Innsmouth by HP Lovecraft. Moreau's name is a reference to The Island of Dr. Moreau by HG Wells, where a mad scientist on an island experiments result in human-animal hybrids. I believe the same story inspired the Master in Fallout

The monster representative of House Moreau (and Salvatore himself we come to learn) in the opening fairytale parable is a giant fish creature with multiple eyes dubbed The Fish King. I knew to expect a giant fish boss going into Moreau's section of the map, but I didn't expect him and the Fish King to be one and the same (at least the first time I saw that section). Interesting to get some insight into kappa ancestry and to see our "beauty of the grotesque" fish man has some ties to Japanese yokai as well. Being better versed in European mythology and folklore creatures, I would cite our tragic, low self-worth "Fisher King" as influenced by Celtic kelpies, Slavic Rusalka, and the English character of The Fisher King. The minute I heard "dragging passerby into the depths" and "spewing acid", I immediately thought of the attacks Gaijin mentioned. Moreau's boss fight is my favorite in the game, even if Heisenberg's is more intense; Beneviento's is more chilling; and Dimitrescu's is a better cap off to her section of the game.

I thought Moreau was more of a Gollum inspired character. Since Japanese interpretations of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings is a frog like creature, and the fact the Lycans look and act like orcs, than werewolves.
