Blob fishes actually look like fairly normal fishes when underwater. They live deep in the ocean, in a high pressure environment. When they are brought to the surface, the drastic change in water pressure causes their body to swell up like we see in those pictures. So that swollen fish we usually see in pictures would've actually been in a lot of physical pain if it were alive when it was taken.

I've used Das in it's many variants for years, so I have a few tips. I'm sure a ton of folk have probably already said these but here goes: to join two bits, so they don't randomly detached once dried, slightly score or rough up the two bits before you stick 'em together. Das does take a while to dry in thick bits so using tin foil or, as I do polystyrene or even cotton ball, or other shapes you can buy or carve yourself from waste packaging, is a great idea and saves on clay. Great job my Nerde friend! But, don't go too thin, like you might over an armature with poly clay though, as it has a tendency to get brittle and might break when you pick it up or crack during drying. It's like any other craft or art material, you gotta play with it a bit to find it's strengths and weaknesses. My next goal is to get you to embrace yarn based crafting! You need one of the faster developing yarn projects, like punch needle embroidery or even rug hooking where you're seeing results almost at the same speed as painting or drawing....just a suggestion. Thanks for your vids. As someone who also has a chronic health issue, I enjoy watching you craft on the days I can't. Huge hugs from the wilds of Scotland and keep the projects coming!

I work with the das clay too and this will be very helpful. Once i put it in the oven and it actually had less cracks and it dried faster,But when i did that i did run into small difficulties because i was working with limited time so i tried to do it all in one day which ment the clay was warm and a bit soft on the inside so i would still leave it out for one day,although that kind of defeats the purpose of putting it in the oven.
@GreydeDeuil
@GreydeDeuil 2 жыл бұрын
Ive also worked with clay, though not specifically DAS clay, but from my experience working at a ceramics place, if you let the clay dry slowly it tends to have more strength and less cracking. It is going to take longer, but if youve got a project that youve spent more time than you want to admit to and have it come out decently, then the sacrifice is worth it. The way that projects were dried slowly where i worked is that you wrapped the piece in a damp paper towel(s) and then put it in a loosely folded over plastic bag for about a week or more. Take it back out and let it sit in the open air for a bit longer. Smaller pieces will of course dry faster, but the above is a rough-ish guide for how we dealt with ceramic clay, i would think that it would probably work fairly well with normal air dry clay type materials...barring paper based stuff, dont want any mold to develop there.

Awwww a pug frog......name them ‘Progg’ 😂 I found with clay when doing things like the bow or blob eyes etc that using a sharp pointy thing to crosshatch some shallow grooves into the two sides you want to stick together, adding just a dab of water then putting them together works better. The clay sorta smooshes into the grooves from either side and bonds a little better.

I think it's better to treat this type of clay, like ceramic clay; you need to work pieces together really thoroughly, and use slip (disolved clay) to attach any piece you add to your sculpture.

@jessicus
@jessicus 2 жыл бұрын
Tip for air dry clay: When attaching pieces, slip and score. Slip can be made by dissolving a bit of the clay in some water and adding a bit of vinegar and this should have a yogurt-y consistency. Scoring is when you create marks on the surface where you want to attach the piece and the piece of you want to attach. Then you add the slip on the score marks, attach the pieces, wrap a thin coil around it, and smooth it. c:
@roguewolf7053
@roguewolf7053 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. It’s similar to scoring pieces of polymer clay when attaching and using liquid sculpy, bake and bond or similar product! Which are all things/methods she is familiar with when using polymer clay.🤷🏻‍♀️
@Nirrrina
@Nirrrina 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining it. I knew about scoring it but didn't know the slip part. Interesting. Jackie must have though it was completely different than working with polymer clay. It certainly looks different, quite a bit messier, than polymer.

@jessicus
@jessicus 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark_Agamotto1313_Smith From what I was told, vinegar added into the slip allows the clay the stick together better/creates a stronger bond. I'm not sure about the science behind it, but it works!
@roguewolf7053
@roguewolf7053 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark_Agamotto1313_Smith My guess would be that since vinegar is very acidic it would help better dissolve the clay to make the slip as well as cause the slip to have a mild similar effect on the pieces it’s applied to which would help make a stronger bond. It also evaporates fairly quickly which could help the pieces being attached create a stronger stable bond quicker. But that’s just a guess based on the fact u can use vinegar diluted with water to make a cheap clay softener to smooth oven bake clay pieces before baking🤷🏻‍♀️ I could be wrong

The clay she used reminded me of the clay we used in elementary in art. It looked the exact same color and acted the same with water, but you bake it. And the way the paint looked on Moriah's creatures after she added the gloss even further solidifies the thought in my mind that the clay isn't air dry, and that's why it took so long to dry, was because it actually needed to be baked?
@katw6757

It is actually air dry clay. The amount of water added during forming and thickness of pieces probably effect the drying time
@roguewolf7053
@roguewolf7053 2 жыл бұрын
The type they used actually is air dry clay. But it’s formula makes it take longer to dry but is less likely to crack. Most fast drying air dry clay has a high likelihood of cracking bc of how rapidly(and often unevenly) the clay shrinks as it drys. Air dry stone clay like this one take longer to dry fully but tend to do so more evenly and thus crack less. Also these projects were very thick pieces of clay so it’s no wonder they took a long time to dry. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just a hint -When adding folds into clay, use cling film, or as you probably know it, plastic wrap, over the *MOISTened* (there, I said it for you)clay before you use your tool. This makes the clay roll into the fold, rather than make a harsh crease that can look like a cut. Push up and under slightly too, for an even foldier fold! And .... today’s the day! Probably can’t afford shipping to England, but I might try and replicate with items here, if it’s possible, so I can join in.

Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was like 'but you're supposed to slip and score' to attach bits so they don't fall off. Cause I distinctly recall being taught this when we worked with clay in art class and I figured it probably still applied to the air dry clay as well. Esp since I noticed Moriah doing that in some of the clips you showed.

Das is among the best air dry clays you can get because it doesn't shrink and crack as easily as other clays. You're doing it right! With putting foil on the inside. My tip for parts like eyes and bow that you can't smooth into the rest of the clay is to do what you do with pottery clay. Make slip. Take a bit of the clay and mix it with water (It takes a bit of patience and jabbing the clay) until it forms a thick paste. Score both sides you want to attach together and add slip to it, then stick the pieces together.

Love the blob fish! Also, in order to stick pieces even with small attachments you could try the method of scoring and slipping typically used with firing clays. It should work in theory.

Your first creature reminds me of an 80’s/90’s UK claymation called Trapdoor! It was about a creature ( a spider-like creature) called Bert, a sarcastic skull called Boney who both had to give food/serve The Thing Upstairs. As a little grain, I loved it!

I gotta say "Jackie you're doing it wrong" when it comes to sculpting with air dry clay. You should treat it more like regular ceramic clay in that it will need slipping and scoring for added parts to stick. That's why the eyes popped out. It's not enough to just set or press added pieces into the clay, even if you mush the sides and blend them to the main body, it'll be likely to crack or pop off. Also, I personally recommend Polyform ModelAir paper clay when it comes to air dry clay. I've tried that DAS myself and didn't like working with it at all.

Tip: when the clay keeps falling off, make a cross (❌☦️ kinda looking like that )and indents when you adding to the clay creation, that way it won’t fall off.

Ok so some pointers 1. You knead clay because you want to knock out air from it and prevent cracks in the future. Air dry clay starts to harden as soon as you take it out of the package so kneading should be fast, 2. Even thou it takes longer time to dry if the clay peace is one big lump of clay, you also have to be very careful when adding anything in the middle. All clay contracts as it dries, it loosed moisture and so it shrinks. If your center is too big the clay will crack because the center is not shrinking with it.
