After my mom passed away, a day or 2 later I dreamed I was in a white void and my mother was just hugging me and I felt like she was at piece and letting me know she was ok. No words were spoken in the dream. Just a vivid experience like I really felt like I was being hugged. RIP mom I love you ❤.

I love the DEI talk. Jaffe keeps saying "as a White man do we deserve a seat at the table", but it goes the other way too. I'm Hispanic and from my point of view I DO NOT want White people trying to crusade for me. I believe there's a lot of White guilt out there and some White people think they have to crusade for people of color. To me, that's totally racist because you think we're incapable of representing ourselves or speaking out for ourselves if we feel offended or underrepresented. Let me repeat, I DO NOT need White people to crusade for me, and MANY MANY others of my world feel the same.

White females in particular I believe are to blame for a lot of the division in this country. Women got a seat at the table (rightfully so) and as they seem to always do, decided instead of being a part of something, they needed to be in charge of everything. They stick their nose in everything, and in my opinion destroy it. Gaming, sports, television, politics, you name it. Name one area where they haven’t gone in, forced change, and made things worse.

At this point the extreme left white people has become the most racist group. This "crusader" mentality just comes across as stewardship to me as if minority groups cannot mange their own affairs and they have to "handle" everything for them. In fact their disingenuous strident positions only serve to increase animosity toward minorities lower those groups media marketability instead of promoting inclusion.

Ultimately, I agree with you, but Jaffe brings a good counterpoint to this. If most people agreed with this sentiment, as a lot of gamers claim to, then there should be no issue with the industry's push for inclusivity. Gamers claim they don't like these characters because they are poorly written, but I'm inclined to believe that's more of a smokescreen to obscure the real fact: Gamers are majority white, male, and straight and relate easier to stories and characters who reflect that demographic. That's just kinda human nature though, not exclusive to gamers.

I'd love to hear Jaffe and Mark Kern (Grummz) discuss the whole SBI shitshow. If you look at the SBI situation objectively and then add what Grummz has been claiming and also proven over the past weeks, I really don't see how any reasonable minded person would side with SBI. These people are open racists and leverage the fear of brand damage via political activism to worm themselves into the industry to write for an audience they openly despise. Jaffe's take on basketball is really bizarre to me. He seems to genuinely believe that black people are just naturally better at basketball for some random reason, which makes no sense. It seems fairly obvious that the reason black people are better at basketball is cultural, in combination with the idea that they have generally less economic opportunities than whites, which leads them to focus their time on a cheaper and more easily accessible activity like basketball. OBVIOUSLY I'm speaking in generalities here, and I'm not placing any sort of judgement on anything. But anyways, does he really believe that if you switched the overall economic status and cultural preferences of whites and blacks, black people would still have 70%+ representation in the sport? That would be shocking, and I just don't get where he's coming from on that. Does he believe that the reason most NASCAR drivers are white is because white people are just randomly better drivers than black people for no reason?

Why do I have to find the "center" or progenitor of the ESG movement? or the DEI movement? it's happening. and it's detrimental. How do I know it's happening? Easy boss says "hire more diverse people" recruiter says, fine by race and gender it is. What happens when you narrow your pool of hires down to 13% of the population? your chances of getting a qualified candidate goes way down, when every company is fighting over qualified candidates in this small pool of people. Jaffe has so bought into the propaganda its laughable and painful listening to this conversation. The problem is that this mindset has engulfed every aspect of the entertainment industry at the detriment of said industry. Just look at disney, when's the last profitable film they've made? Forbes sayss disney has lost $1 billion in the last year. Sweet baby inc is just jumping on the band wagon, because the investors are liek "We have to support DEI" and low and behold you get bottom of the barrel people trying to build the company. And because they know why they were hired the lean into it. Making it the cornerstone of their nonsense. And they deserve every bit of critisism. I'm not going to hunt down the person that put them up to it and give them a pass. no They put themselves out there and they deserve the criticism. @@necmqcYT @necmqcYT you're going to need to be more specific about which instances you're talking about if you want my opinion. Regardless, these guys are talking about pretty robust and complicated topics so referencing anecdotal evidence or googling a random study is typically not going to be enough to put an entire topic to bed. Data is less so to prove a definitive point as it should be used to narrow down better questions that need to be asked. Specifically the fortune 500 conversation, Jaffe asked a good question about if some of those companies had DEI programs and what effect that could have on the study. That's what creates good conversations.

So on this whole representation thing, I think Jaffe is completely wrong. I get he is trying to be a good person but I just think this is silly. I´m not from the US, I´m Colombian. During the 90´s most of the movies we watched were american and the games I played were either american or japanese. Most of the time we colombians weren´t even mentioned and if we were it wasn´t very flattering (and I get it). But I never thought "hmm this terminator movie really needs a colombian character", you don´t need to see your own race, culture, sex or even species in something to be able to understand it, identify with it or feel something. You can watch a movie without people, just animals and you can feel emotions just as strongly as with a human cast. People loved Chimp Empire on netflix and there are no humans. A story can be a good story without filling up checklist of representation requirements.

Since Jaffe asked, as a Mexican, my only issue with the majority of our older media (ours being American) having white leading or often all white casts is how the push to change and improve with DEI is so black and white, literally. I think anyone with empathy can relate to anyone regardless of skin color or gender but seeing Dom be a leading man alongside Marcus was fucking awesome in Gears of War. The reason why DEI feels forced is because it feels like board rooms are saying, "Just change a character to black." The most recent example I can think of is Starfield. The founder is black, the junior scientist and lead scientist are black, and the Russian of all people is too? It's like BGS made every character white and raced swaped in the 11th hour. Not even mentioning Andreja, she has a Portuguese name, but her accent sounds more eastern, but nothing was explored about her because, in reality, she was almost cut from the game alongside her entire faction. Would it be great to get more Hispanic representation? Sure, but I also don't studios blindly race swaping characters. I relate more to straight white male Joel Miller from Last of Us 1 than James from Mass Effect 3. Just cause James says Oralé or Cabron isn't enough for me to love him (although James is underrated). A final thought, I saw a comment saying Hispanics don't need white guys speaking for us, and I both agree and disagree. White people trying to change our verbage and change Spanish to be neutral over gendered is disgusting, and I feel violent impuses whenever I see "Latinx." On the other hand, I don't see many Hispanic people entering the industry, that may be economic reasons or systemic or lack of interest, but if any race, not just a white person, wants to make a game with some Hispanic characters that would be badass. Shadows of the Damned was made by Suda51, and I believe Mikami had a hand it in and it was cool to see. Tldr: More better written characters would be nice, DEI isn't an issue when they aren't race swapping blindly, example Gears of War 1-3.

If you don’t mind, can I provide an anecdote from back when I first went to university? I was taking a critical thinking and writing class as one of the required courses for my major and there was this young, Latino girl who was super active politically… meaning she was an activist. She would fly to countries in Central America and help out and protest, etc etc. Every time I hear Colin talk about how much Hispanics hate the term “LatinX” I think of her. Do you know why? Because this was exactly how she referred to her people: as being “Latinx.” She was a young Latina from LA… about as Latina as an American can get… and yet she used that term. My teacher in that class was also Latino and he also used that term. So sure. I’m sure there are a bunch of Hispanics that hate the term and I myself (as a white man) think it’s a little goofy but I’ve literally met and spoken with Latinos who used the word in their daily life.

Hey Collin and Jaffe, this is such an interesting conversation that you’re having about gender and race in terms of game characters. I’d like to turn both of your attentions to a game that nailed every facet of those for me. It’s something you wouldn’t expect. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. The character demographics are outstanding in that game. You have a white, male, American protagonist, a black American Admiral , a Lebanese woman as your sidekick and second in command, a black British Staff Sgt, even a black Nigerian woman who is an engineer on the bridge. Not once in my multiple playthroughs did I question wether or not the game was PC or woke. Why? Because they don’t preach about their race, or gender. They are all part of a single team that is working together for something greater than all of them. I would love for either of you to take a look at that game (again with a different viewpoint if you’ve already played it) and have a discussion about it at some point.

I didn’t really understand the point Colin was trying to make with the Toriyama thing. It seemed like was saying that a Japanese man can produce a very specific style of Japanese content (Dragon Ball) and international audiences will enjoy it. Well, yeah? Duh? I’m not sure what that has to do with DEI or Sweet Baby Inc. It almost goes against his argument that you don’t need input from X type of person to help inform the portrayal of X type of person in media.
@Tigreuh7 ай бұрын
It was about quotas, nowadays most things have the token black, asian, LGBT and so on, it's based on the thought that representation matters. Colin was using Dragon Ball as an example of something that's hugely popular in parts of the world not represented in the media.
