Our Hero analyzes the problematic nature of a god who "sometime is cool with murder".
We talk about clunky dialogue and bad fiction.
We Listen to Dan Lafferty explain how he felt inspired by the story of Nephi.
Then we dive into a little good fiction and read how actual authors write murders into their stories. (feat. Dostoevsky)
Strap in its gonna be a wild one.

I didn't mind the videos until they showed sariah flipping pages of the brass plates. I can't imagine a woman in 600 bce doing that. She most certainly illiterate and subservient to her husband. Their potrail of laban was poor. He was a military leader. He was not likely a fat bureaucrat. Also it is ridiculous that the brass plates are hundred of years old. They had parts of Isaiah that were very recent. As I think back in seminary they always taught that the journey back to Jerusalem took weeks. A trip to Cairo on foot is a week away. I am a Lt Col in the USAF. Part of my job is protecting classified documents. If some came to me and asked for classified documents I would send them away. If they came a second time and tried to bribe me I would call security. The actions of laban are reasonable. God lying to nephi was a big shelf breaker for me

I started Crime and Punishment once, only made it a few chapters in--thought it was awful, then I found another translation. BIG difference between versions when it comes to Russian literature. Now it's one of my favorites.

Another miracle...Nephi is able to take off Laban's clothes without getting them bloody. I think maybe they would be soaked in blood, no? 😂😂😂

@ubermormon9611 exactly... but to be fair, the brass plates that were handed down to Laban through generations (anachronism because brass wasn't a metal generations before 600 bc) weren't the ones JS unearthed.

I sort of look at the BoM is really more a look into the mind of Joesph Smith

Exactly. The way Nephi is the younger brother who is “large in stature” and the hero of the story seems eerily familiar.

@@ubermormon9611 also it extends to the doctrine they all seen serve his wants or feelings like with the temple rituals clearly asked at Alvin with the baptism for the deaf or when Emma moaned about cleaning up tobacco and spittoons. Every time it's all about the the moment Joesph is in. It's like he wanted at some level to fix christianty in a way that made sense to him. Is what I get from it.

Exactly. Not to mention the entire premise is just the mound builder myth plus the Bible.

@@ubermormon9611 in a way there was a perfect stage so to speak for the immigrations of a dreamer and sweet talker to create what he did. Along with the people of the time where more open to folk magic and supernatural believes. Its not that it was inevitable it was there was all the ingredients to create the probability of it.
I finally watched Russell Nelson's talk
