I have been out academics for a couple of years now, and I'm reading a lot of comments about how strange it is and how it can be hard to suddenly feel "lost", when transitioning from uni to your next phase in life. I wanted to share my experience to tell you that YES, it gets better, even if you feel like nothing is waiting for you, that no matter how much effort you put in job searchig (or whatever you're trying to do), you'll not find something to do, and even if you think that it won't get better, trust me, it will. Sometimes you'll have to prioritize change over confort, and maybe even try something out that is not what you always wanted to do, but this does not mean you'll give up on your dreams. Life is a constant transition phase, and this is just another (tall) step to walk. Take this from a physicist that now is happy designing trains, keep trying

Thank you so much for sharing this, Valeria. I know that I certainly feel lost right now -- and I know that *so* many other graduates are feeling the same. This is such a comforting thing to read x

@@Avinathi are YOU crazy? Lol where I’m from most people has paid their university fees in full BEFORE they’ve graduated. We do stay at home… simply because moving out is incredibly expensive in my area and most first jobs after graduation just don’t pay high enough. Staying at home for a bit longer is the clever thing to do: save to purchase a home, instead of wasting most income in a rental home. I understand where your comment comes from, but do not assume that in all places the things go as they do where you are from. And yes, Ruby is staying at home apparently doing “nothing” in the sense that she’s neither studying nor working… but as you’ve pointed out she’s got an income though youtube and is also working towards publishing a book etc.

I come from a place where uni graduates are pressured to go into the working world really quick, a place that values hyper-productivity and marketing your best self to the working world. As a senior, I've been feeling lots of pressure to enter this 'adult world', especially because my interests lie in a field that's not highly valued in my local business & tech-focused society (i.e., my interests lie in the social sciences, heritage and community). Watching this truly gave me comfort in reminding me to take the time to focus on my passions and what I truly believe in, and nurture it at my own pace (of course, while also adequately providing for myself materially in any way I can). From someone truly tired of chasing (academic) achievements and titles, largely disillusioned from my truly what makes me happy, thank you so much for this video Ruby!

Be patient, better things are on the way. No need to force them to come. An option would be to do something useful and beautiful in the meantime, useful for others and beautiful for your heart. Sometimes volunteering or internships (even unpaid) can bring unexpected opportunities. Plus, any job can be taken temporarily just to experience the discipline of going to work, even if it is not yet the best and our domain :) Wish you all the best!

I dream of being post grad too. Currently I’m studying law and it feels very heavy and stressful. It’s interesting too, but lots of it takes so much energy because the pace is very fast. Being post grad is a privilege and being at uni. is also a privilege. Sometimes it help to think back too, that those things one dreamt of came true due to all the hard work put in.

That’s amazing. I also like to study philosophy, currently Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, and the Bible every morning followed by a little foreign language study. Learning a little late that it is necessary to train not only your body and your intellect but also your moral principles. Setting aside time in the morning to bring your ethics to the forefront of your consciousness helps avoid unhelpful “shoot from the hip” responses to the challenges of the day ahead. I must reserve my major reading for the evening. Thanks for all your excellent videos. I must be on the right track!

And while I still enjoy going to libraries, my number one favorite learning experience is enjoying all the different programs through Eventbrite. I'm learning so much history - particularly UK history, which is a favorite of mine. So many of the programs steers my deep-dive research online and library books... I like the idea of starting your day with the things you like and want to do. I’m generally horrible with routines and habits, and weekdays tend to get away from me what with a full-time job and chores… But! I recently started using Habitica, and while all my habits are the bare minimum version of themselves (”set the timer for 5 min and clean something” lol), I’m sort of addicted to ticking things off. So I’ve been reading fiction (”at least one page” turns into 50 pages some days, and when I don’t have time it’s still one page) and reading a poem every day (also copying the poems in a notebook just to practice my longhand). This morning I got bold and added ”watch a lecture on something and take notes” to my daily repertoire. I’m a little apprehensive, but also confident that the powers of gamification will see me through 😂

My morning centering routine is comprised of making my bed as soon as I get up, meditating for 20 minutes(I like to do this first thing as I’m very irritable in the morning). I follow this up with 15 minutes of exercise. I used to do half an hour but found myself needing a nap an hour or so afterwards. I set out a thermos with ice water the night before so I don’t have to walk all the way to my fridge. I conclude with a 5 minute cold Shower that I batch with vocal exercises for public speaking. After this I reward myself with coffee and checking my email.
How so? It’s really improved my voice for the purposes of podcasting and general communication. Are you having a bad day or something?
