Ive always said that Primus and Morphine were the two most original bands that defied genres and could only exist in the 90s. Pleasantly surprised to see this collaboration

i strongly agree. even being a fan of les claypool, mark sandman's voice was an essential instrument for the music of morphine. on the other hand we have to recognize that the initiative of pay tribute to mark sandman deserves standing ovations from us. congratulations, but above all, thank you. M.

I like the way Les Claypool sings here in that it contrasts with the original instead of trying to imitate. It's like he says between the lines, "there's no other like Mark Sandman, we miss you Mark". And that is right.
@darling_danke_schoen10 жыл бұрын
MAN! I saw Les Claypool jamming with Mark Sandman at a side stage at H.O.R.D.E. fest in… what… 1996? At Alpine Valley here in Wisconsin. I knew them both then and was stupefied as to what I just stumbled onto. This was not a planned thing, I think… and not their major acts because each played later on the big stage. I won't (and didn't) forget that moment and this here makes sense in ref to that!
@setboy110 жыл бұрын
Not very many musical moments I hear about that I feel jealous about, but you sure have named one of them right here!
@darling_danke_schoen10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I only have a couple truly rock-n-roll stories. Let's see... DJ Swamp at Cactus Club bar hitting on my girlfriend at the time after his set, lol... the time I saw The White Stripes (same place) play when I was high on like 5 hits of acid (sheesh! pretty epic, tho ;) and then there was that time when Billy Corgan came to see the Frogs play there, and Wesley Willis tried to sell him some of his CD's, and Billy said no... hahaha good times! That's about it, tho. I'm retired from rock-n-roll. It's the quiet life with only "boring stories of glory days" as Bruce Springy used ta sing

Hello Handyman100; well I think you did a great experience. In your opinion, was Mark Sandman's playing more impressive and rawer maybe because of his two-strings-only tuning and slide? Or Les Claypool was more, as he played those exquisite scales and sometimes using the whammy-bar? Was Sandman's bass louder than Les' bass? Did that performance remind you of some remote R&B or even psychedelic rock, or thery simply didn't remind nothing, becasue they were so many years ahead of our time, as I think myself? Thanks if you respond me. I play the bass (live here in Rio) but would like to have seen both live. They together and live...you was in a historic moment!!! Best wishes.

This is what was played: 1997-08-02 Alpine Valley Jam, East Troy, WI, USA 01. Birthday Cake* 02. Eleven O'Clock* 03. Turtle* 04. Pulled Over The Car* 05. Lilah** * - with Les Claypool on bass (Mark Sandman on slide guitar). ** - with Jane Scarpantoni (Ben Folds Five) on cello.

This is in no way a dis to Les Claypool, I think this version is cool. Hearing the song without Mark's bass and voice makes you really appreciate how perfect Morphine was together. Every once in a while the exact right people get together at the exact right time with the exact right talent. I'm glad Les joined them for this. I'm sure he realized he had big unique shoes to fill.
@mlf1980 Жыл бұрын
they were indeed perfect.. Mark was one of the best lyricists since Joplin. Cash, Hendrix and SR Vaughn.. indig both new and old blues but nobody beats Mark

Hey Karen, then why are you dising? You know Mark's dead. STFU. This was a genius mix. I would have never paired Les and Morphine, but it freakin' works. Glass half empty aren't you? This beats the shit out of Sammy Hagar replacing ELR.

This is probably the best quality recording of Les Claypool's signature bass in existence.
@Homanjer4 жыл бұрын
There's others of similar quality. There was a live show recording from Jimmy Kimmel's show in 2011 I think. One of the very last shows he played that replica piccolo bass. A few months after he was already playing the pachyderm basses.
@Homanjer4 жыл бұрын
Also signature bass? The bass which he is known by mostly yeah but that bass wasn't built for him or anything like that so I wouldn't really call it a signature.

As a few folks have already stated, *nothing* can possibly compare to the original Sandman vocal on a Morphine track. But I do dig this for what it is. Another tremendous bass player and vocalist putting his spin on this for the sake of a tribute. In that way I can appreciate that thin veneer of Primus funk layered on top. RIP Sandman, Long Live Les and remaining members of Morphine!
