Part 5: • Morris Day on Prince F...
Part 3: • Morris Day Speaks on R...
Part 1: • Morris Day on Joining ...
In this clip, Morris Day opened up to VladTV about Prince giving him the option of putting together his own band after he recorded "Get It Up" at Prince's studio. From there, Morris and Prince cut the entire first album for The Time, got a deal with Warner Bros. and put the band together after the album was complete. To hear more, including how Prince convinced Morris to lead the band, hit the above clip.
Buy Morris Day's new book, On Time: A Princely Life in Funk, here: www.amazon.com...
Morris Day opened up to VladTV about Prince taking creative control on The Time's first album by playing all the instruments and laying out their vocal arrangements, despite having big talent in the group. Morris explained that Prince used the pseudonym "Jamie Starr" in the album credits, but Morris said he wasn't hiding behind the name. He went on to speak about The Time going on Prince's "Controversial" tour and Prince starting beef between The Time and his band by throwing eggs during their show. You can hear how the whole thing unfolded above.

Prince wasn't just a musical genius, his leadership are marketing abilities were second to his musical talent. He possessed a rich intuition and courage that is rare in any artist, and music was only a medium for him to capture the irony of a revolution in progress. As all great visionaries do, he worked tirelessly to incorporate as many people into the fold bringing forth amazing talent and iconoclastic expression.

Well if he didn't want them to out do him yet, saw the talent....why bring them in in the first place??? Be real people! PRINCE played ALL the instruments on their albums. They just played PRINCE'S music live. They learned their parts! SMH!!!! Morris is full of shit!!! He's still disgruntled because of the requirements demanded of him while under their agreement!!! He signed, he consented to it, he was made to honor his agreement! So as far as anything else Morris is ALSO capitalizing on Prince's death! Morris wouldn't even have a name if it weren't for Prince! Wake up people! None of these guys existed without Prince! He brought them in BECAUSE of the talent not jealous or scared!!! Try and take a look at hid. Odd of work AFTER All of them left!!! The only people that went on to do anything really great but Jam and Lewis! And Jam and Lewis didn't have a beef with Prince even to this day! They gave him complete credit for everything they did to this day and before his death were in his vault working on music to release with him on his next album!

To sum up, Morris was working a rental car desk, heard Prince on the radio and went back to MN to see if he could get a job with Prince. Prince hired Morris as a videographer. Prince hired Morris a band. Prince gave Morris kickin' songs for the band. Prince played on all their albums. Prince took Morris and his band on tour with him. Prince paid for dancing and acting lessons for Morris. Prince put Morris centre stage in Purple Rain. Prince paid Morris $50K for being in Purple Rain. Prince continued to invite Morris and The Time to his concerts and to PP over the years.

He answered how Jam and Lewis felt. They didn’t know. The album was done before the band was put together. Morris said it right there in front of him.

The Paisley Imprint. The hand in the pocket was your signature. 💜💜 #MusicalElites JamieStar was still his sound so we all knew it was Prince. A prince fan knows bc you never have to worry about him sampling anything or one, as he was PURE ARTIST. _ @vladtv you gotta track down #AlexanderOneal. Dude smoke so much crack and snorted so much coke AND his voice is still golden. My homeboy hired him for a concert once and man it was unbelievable to hear him sing Sunshine in its original key. Yup. He got a damn good Prince story. Prince was a funny mfr.

I thought Morris Day was always underrated despite being overshadowed by Prince. Looking forward to the full interview. Thoughts of this interview is the true art of true musicianship at its finest back in the 80s, damn that Charlie Murphy skit comes to mind. 🤣
