Actually, Prince created other bands purposefully locally so that he wouldn’t be the only Minnesotan on the music scene. He needed some “competition” so that he could create & cultivate huge hype around Minneapolis’ talent and the big/unique sound they were puttin’ out there for the masses. After all, he had to get noticed by the world. This is also why he got Paul Peterson going with the group The Family. They had a big hit with The Screams of Passion. Prince put his girlfriend of the moment in that group too, Susannah Melvoin, (yes, Wendy’s sister). Pretty brilliant move by Prince.
