I'm 34 and still play this game. Got the MK arcade 1up cabinet, worth every f---king peny. I was 8 years old when I first played MK1 on the Sega Genesis. At the time, there was no blood in the consoles, you had to put in a code I was completely unaware of. Didn't matter, I still thought the game was way ahead of its time. What I loved about it were the graphics, music, martial arts and interesting characters. Scorpion was my favorite, especially his story. During the early 90's, I only grew up playing very wholesome games. Mario, Ninja Turtles, and Donkey Kong etc etc. Mortal Kombat 1 was the first time I experienced a dark video game that was actually believable and violent. When Mortal Kombat 2 came out the blood and gore was added with no special codes needed, and I was slightly disturbed by it xD It felt like a game I shouldn't be playing, but that's what I loved about it in the end. When Mortal Kombat 3 and the movie arrived.... it was a full blown obsession that would last a life time.

Yup cause of space and time it was overlooked. Also the sprite was acted by the same person due to costs and time they didn’t get another actor to act out the stances and poses so they just colored in the ninjas to create another character. Same for Kitana and Mileena

This game was all around awesome from the music learning the blood code reptiles appearance and occasional fight with him the witch flying on the bridge stage and then the fatalities. I was in suspense playing the game or watching someone play the game the only other game that did it to me was the first resident evil game for Sony playstation.

Turning 32 this year, grew up playing this on my Sega late nights on my days off from school. My neighbor had the SNES but his parents never got him this game because they didn't want him playing any violent games. He'd come over to my house alot to play this and burn me with Scorpions fatality and I'd rip his head off with Sub Zero lol I still have this in my collection ever since my parents got it for me for my Birthday back in 97 still in grade A condition complete with the Manuel

Eh, no, actually it's just A,B,A,C,A,B,B. So you're very close, but no there's no start in the code. But I'm very close to your age and grew up playing this game too. I have a Mortal Kombat Arcade1up now. The more I look at these games now that I'm older, the more I realize the SNES versions aren't really better, even for MKII and 3. There are more background details/animations and sounds in some of the SNES versions, but the character sprites look better in all of the Sega versions of every MK game, especially the detail in their faces. The only exception is Scorpion and Sub Zero having the same stance in MK I. The music is different in the Sega versions (except MK3), but is very good, and unique. On the Genesis version of MK3, I feel that the scratchiness of the audio/Shao Kahn's voice adds to grittiness of the game, and sounds more authentic, in a good sort of way. Also, if I remember correctly, the SNES version used the wrong music for certain levels on MK3, and the Genesis had them all correct. It is cool and nostalgic to look back on these now, but as a kid I was never satisfied with any of the home versions and dreamed that one day I would own the actual arcade versions. Now I do, but it's cool to look back at the versions I played as a kid. Finally, there was the Sega Nomad, a portal Sega Genesis, which was roughly the size of a Sega Game Gear, only fatter, and played Genesis Games. There was never a portable SNES. So the best portable versions of these games ended up being the Genesis versions. Sega Nomad is an awesome system. It can also be hooked up to a TV like a regular Genesis.

And I agree, first MK on the SNES looked great but it was bad. Genesis did a great job with the first MK. Not perfect but close enough. I preferred MKII on the SNES. MK3 on the SNES was bad but unfortunately I never played it on the Genesis. I got a Super Console X Retro emulator so I can play those games now. Playstation's MK Triology was epic

@@SR7N3SI Oh, I see what you mean now. I had the game for awhile before I was finally able to locate a magazine that had the blood code. That was awesome the first time I did the blood code! MKII overall graphics and backgrounds look better on SNES, but I think the character sprites look better on genesis (except for some missing animations) and the music is kinda cool. I didn't like that it was different than the arcade at the time, but it makes an interesting version to look back on now. I have an MK arcade1up now. Both SNES and Genesis versions of MK3 had this strange thing where it had less blood when you uppercut or roundhouse kick. They would have only two drops of blood fall to the ground, instead of like 6 in the arcade, and on the previous games on the same system. Don't know why they did that, but it sucked. That said, the playstation version was by far the best home version, and yes, I liked Trilogy too. The first Mortal Kombat is my favorite Mortal Kombat, and my favorite game of all time. A lot of people like MKII the best, but I love MKI.

I remember seeing the arcade for the first time in a bowling alley. I LOLed when I saw Scorpion's spear move for the first time. I remember having a hard time deciding which console I was going to buy MK 1 for. I wanted the Genesis for the original music and blood but the SNES was more faithful to the arcade. I ended up loving this more than the SNES version but still longing for the SNES version and I did purchase it after. But man I played the hell out of the Genesis version with friends over the SNES version. Watching this after so many years the Genesis lacks so many sound effects and its so cheesy compared to the SNES but the music was awesome.

@@PopExpo SNES indeed was better and faithful to the arcade. Although I really enjoyed the Genesis music. It was original and had this dark Chinese kung fu horror element to it. I also didn't like that millisecond delay in controls response. I still remember as a kid the rumor that SNES did have a blood code but was sworn in secrecy and the kids kept talking about how to access it. But everyone had the Genesis version at home that Christmas and I remember everyone with the debate of which console was better to get MK1. I even remeber when MK2 came out for home consoles everyone was skeptical to get the SNES version and in school everyone was saying "no this time the SNES version is far better than Genesis MK2" lol
