MK3 holds some special memories for me, because how quickly the port was on PS1 and how close it seemed to the arcade. My friends and I played the hell out of that, and it really gave us an advantage against other players in the arcade. Especially when UMK3 came out.

Love the videos man. And to be honest I do agree with you on certain things when it comes to the differences between MK3 vs UMK3. But to be honest I prefer UMK3 since it feels like a completed version of MK3. Plus, while you were playing MK3 the same few stages were looping (one of the main complaints you had about UMK3).

The looping issue does happen in Vanilla when you knock a character through certain ceilings. Like I said the two are very close for myself but I’ll always like MK3 more. I do respect those who prefer UMK3 more however. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼

Been watching your channel for the last few months, and I was wondering if you were planning on doing the PC versions of the games. I find the keyboard controls to be very tight, and no loading for Shang Tsung. I prefer them for the most part, though Mortal Kombat II for the SNES is where I fell in love with the series. All of them are on gog if you don't have them already.

I feel like when Cyrax throws two nets, one should come back and tangle him up kind of like how when Sub-Zero throws his ice blast while someone is already frozen it freezes Sub-Zero. I think that would have been pretty fair.

Always have to appreciate MK3 with how they retained that look and feel of what worked in MK2, but were brave enough to add lots of new fighting styles, characters, music, locations and immersive sounds and voices. People won't believe me, but I still prefer Vanilla 3 over Ultimate. Ultimate is just better for competition, and more characters, that's it. People forget Vanilla laid the groundwork for Ultimate. Can't have one without the other.

I think Ultimate happened because originally when MK3 came out in April 95 it wasn’t highly received which led to Midway adding in the extra characters for UMK3 and a release within months. So I prefer UMK3 aka the strawberry milkshake over the vanilla MK3 ice cream lol.

I agree. Ultimate just feels insufferable to play in single player because of the way the AI is always evading/tracking your movement…that alone made playing UMK3 just so annoying as h3ll…

All of the ports of MK3, with the exception of the SNES version, splits the cast so that only two characters appear at any one time. Here, they split Sal Divita's characters to Nightwolf and Sektor, followed by John Turk's credit for Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung, then Lia Montelongo and Eddie Wong's credits for Sindel and Liu Kang, and then Sal Divita's credit as Cyrax and Sektor, while the Genesis/Mega Drive version keeps the original order, only splitting Sal Divita's characters.

It's a decent port, and I managed to snag it myself for a good price several years back. Unfortunately it didn't have the original jewel case with it though. The quality of the music and speech surpasses the arcade since it's CD quality. A couple draw-backs with this version...obviously the loading (which really isn't that bad). No announcement of round 1, 2, etc. No "finish him" music. Some of the speech and death screams are off and cut short to save memory for other things. Also several missing frames of animation here and there, but it does play faster than the arcade does. Graphics are almost indistinguishable from the arcade. All in all it's in the top 3 best ports with PC being the best.

The box the PS1 came in, the fact you could play the sound effects and music in a DVD player. Hooray. I really pushed myself to get to finally learn this huge leap from MK1. $30 second hand in 2003. I was a PS1 fan boy collector for a few years. Damn MK3 made my thumbs hurt. Loved it before it got stolen. Maggots grew under my PS1 and this disc spinning kept it nice n warm for them. Friendship, friendship again.

I never liked 3 as much as I did 2, so I preferred ultimate because it added characters and stages to what I felt was a game that was lacking. Seriously, what were they thinking replacing Scorpion with a traffic cop in vanilla MK3?

Overall I prefer Ultimate, but you raise a lot of good points. With regards to the backgrounds/stages, UMK3 still retains most of the ones from regular MK3. The problem is, with how it was programmed, it cycles through the four new stages TWICE before any of the old stages appear. So in a typical single player game, depending on how well you play and how long or short of a ladder you choose, you may hardly see most of those stages. I also dislike getting rid of the unique images for the endings in UMK3. At least when MK Trilogy came out, the images from original MK3 were used for the endings.

Very well done explanation at the beginning, and I agree with almost everything you said. However, UMK3 will always be a 10, and MK3 will be a 9 to me. You said you felt cheated. Well, I, too, felt cheated, but I felt cheated because, in my opinion, MK3 was too vanilla, if you will. The fact that it left out such important characters such as Scorpion, Kitana, Reptile, Mileena, Classic Subzero, plus the inclusion of Human Smoke that was introduced in MK2. Yes, MK3 has better backgrounds and difficulty, but it was missing too many important characters. UMK3 should've been the MK3 that initially debuted. I will always respect your opinion as you're well aware of. This is just mine. Great upload. 👍👊

Thanks dude. I almost wish they would’ve just released Ultimate as MK3 and used the 6 months to put more into it, for example the original intro story artwork and the original artwork for endings, had they cycled the stages better and perhaps nerfed the single player AI, then I would’ve agreed. And I’ll never get used to the jump in combos. I don’t like them and can’t see myself ever liking them. I respect your opinion though 👊🏼

UMK3 for Saturn seems to have been built off of MK3 for PS1, Saturn UMK3 is easier to go up the towers till you get to Motaro. I have yet to beat him on that version without using the Sheeva stomp spam. You can emulate it perfectly with beetlesaturn in retroarch. Give it a spin, curious to see what you think.

I think it’s much more forgiving. I know it’s a matter of getting some patterns down for UMK3 however like any other game, @tehdrewsus absolutely destroys the AI in UMK3 so if I had his skills when I was younger I may have appreciated it more. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
