Okay, this is it. This comment makes me finally give the game another Chance. Since its release I tried to play and get into the game several times but always quit after like 5-8h. It's the only major isometric crpg of the last decades I just never seemed to get really into. Your comment now gave me the motivation to push through - maybe it's just the beginning that sucks to me haha Thanks for that! :)

Kingmaker taught me one thing. After stressing myself so much, I came to the following "philosophy", if the game is treating me like meat, it's time for the prey to become a hunter, I don't care how, but I'm going to break the game. That's how I developed a build capable of soloing the game.

Same goes for old baldurs gate games. I wasnt even playing on hard mode, it was core rules all long, but i still had my ass beat time after time on simple mobs. Its then i, as i believe many people have, come up with gas chamber strategy. You lure tons of mobs into a room, then launch deadly poison in there, close the door and stand there listening to enemies tearing their nails against the door. Thats like 60% of the game and i dont feel any guilt for playing it this way. Its do or die

Act 4 was exhausting, and what really didn't help was that, while you're doing all this stuff away from your Barony, thinking about the things you'll probably do once this act was over act 5 starts immediately afterwards. It's the only time it does that and it's the only time where you need to start Act 5's story right away or risk bad ends for your companions. So it ends up where you're doing 2 acts back-to-back.

My first encounter with Twisted Rune was during my solo sorcerer run. For me ragequit moments often happen in some administrative gameplay parts that don't have anything to do with fighting. For example in the Pathfinder games or in the Shadowrun games where I enter a new hub and then I have to click through all the NPCs to exhaust all speech options. Those games have beautiful writing, but this sometimes feels like a chore in between gameplay, and it can get really annoying if you miss a quest-giving NPC or you didn't ask that one option that would have marked something on your map. And then that content gets locked off because the main story evolves and you can't really go back unless you load an old save. Other things that grind me down and that can make me quit out early is inventory management. When you fill up on loot and go to a vendor and that same old spiel happens where you slowly go through all the things you looted, figuring out what is an incremental upgrade over the gear you currently have equipped and sell the rest. I think I have quit more games over these time-consuming, administrative tasks than about combat encounters. And another thing are controls. When the character takes one or two more steps after I cease all input for a slow-down animation. Or when you have to actually fight the camera for large portions of the game to get a semblance of an overview and then that then makes you lose encounters.

I’m similar, I don’t “rage” quit games, but I often stop playing or restart when I reach large hubs full of npcs. I get overwhelmed by them. Examples are Baldur’s Gate from BG1, Defiance Bay and Twin Elms from Pillars of Eternity, basically the entirety of the Witcher 3. One of my favorite things about Tyranny is that it lacked any overwhelming city locations and had a bunch of more manageable base camps for various factions.

Best cure for Pathfinder Rage? One word - Kineticist - Infinite unresistible AOE Nukes that hit harder than anything else in the game and requires no resting = win. The hardest part for me of that game is when you have to travel halfway across the map SOLO in order to meet up w/ dream girl. The actual encounter when you get there isn't that hard but the chance of getting into a random battle while trying to get there or back could really kick your ass when you all alone.

Your analysis of Kingmaker is interesting to me. As I absolutely loved that chapter myself, because of it being the point that the story turned unexpectedly (in a good way) from high fantasy into cosmic horror, and the entire chapter was a growing sense of dread that culminated into an amazing cutscene. Instead the part of Kingmaker that made me almost rage quit was the HATEOT. It's just an endless slog of enemies with frustratingly annoying mechanics, and story-wise while the companion finales were interesting, it was lackluster outside of that and not enough to make up for the frustration.

I will say BG2 was instrumental in setting my expectations going forward into RPGs and it has been quite beneficial in allowing me to complete other RPGs that have existed. @@quint3ssent1a To Hit Armor Class Zero. If you know your THAC0, you know the total number you need "To Hit" any Armor Class in the game. Subtract from your THAC0 to hit the easier Armor Classes (the positive numbers) and add to your THAC0 to hit harder Armor Classes (the negative numbers). In the pencil and paper 1st Edition/AD&D/Basic/Expert, etc., Armor Class 10 is the worst armor class. Imagine your average gamer sitting and gaming in their chair with their headphones on full blast - the easiest possible target. But AC -10? Armor Class -10 is the best Armor Class (think of the aforementioned gamer's character in their game world with all that cool armor, shield, Ability Scores, buffs, etc.). The number 0 is right in the middle between 10 and -10. THAC0 is the total number needed to hit that, right? So let's say your character has a THAC0 of 10. With a THAC0 of 10, when you roll your d20 roll and you factor in your bonuses or penalties, your character can hit that wimpy Armor Class 10 on a 2 or higher. Unless the roll is a Natural 1 (as 1s always miss in most people's games). On a d20, you can't roll a 0. 1s always miss, so... 2 or higher total is needed to his the worst Armor Class in the game. THAC0 of 10 - 10 = 0. That same character will need to roll a total of 20 to hit tanky Armor Class -10. With a 19 or lower "To Hit" total, they miss. Talk about tough, huh? THAC0 of 10 + 10 = 20. Here's a visual way to remember it. Think of a see-saw. On one end of the see-saw is Armor Class 10 (the gamer). On the other, Armor Class -10 (their character who is probably heavier and weighing down their side of the see-saw). And in the middle of that see-saw? Armor Class 0. And... THAC0. The number needed "To Hit Armor Class Zero." =)

@@quint3ssent1a I agree. I have to remember that AD&D was written over 50 years ago and I don't think Gygax was not written for the average person, but for those who had college-level reading abilities (see 1st Edition DMG). Plus, D&D has its roots in wargaming where people were used to using math all of the time. For most of them, THAC0 was just another tool to tell them how to hit any Armor Class. That's probably why Wizards of the Coast got rid of it back in 1999 when D&D 3.0 was being playtested. A lot of people just plain can't stand THAC0 and I can't blame them! Hah! Happy gaming to you!

the game has a lot to love, but i really emplore you to learn the magic system..... trying to help here because the magic system is really cool, i dont remember the names of things, but select basically an element, then select of the next things, what you want that element to do (shield, fire a single bolt, fire in a cone, etc) then the last set of choices is options to make it do certain parts of what its doing more, (more aoe, strong effect, etc) you select one of the first two options, element and effect, one of each is mandatory, then you can put as many of the last option on as you want, if your lore stat is high enough. On at least one playthrough make your main character a caster, lock their stat growth so they cant gain anything but lore, and make some spells that do halarious things, you can save spells that are similar but not identical to avoid cooldown restrictions and really let some things rip, its not the best startegy for highest difficulty ng+++++ etc, but its a really fun way to break the game once. If you need more help send me a message somehow, i love a lot about tyranny but i feel like your saying that you love final fanatasy 7 but dont understand the materia system, or path of exile but you dont understand the skill tree.

Having just recently beat the dark elf boss on the second highest difficulty on a non NG+ save in God of War(2018), I agree that the fight is just a struggle if you don't cheese it. It took me a solid 10-15 or so attempts to beat him. Most of my deaths were caused by him spamming that one attack where he flies into the air and then charges at you. A mistimed dodge was all it took for me to lose the fight as he does an explosion with it that causes instant build up of the blindness/darkness effect. He would then follow it up again with the same attack and that was when I would die because I couldn't see him to time my dodge properly. I also hated when he spammed his range attack as well. Just a frustrating boss fight in general. I also found it pretty funny that I struggled on this boss when I beat the vast majority of the bosses in Elden Ring in under 5 attempts (Melania included). The only ones that took me more than that were Margit, Mohg Lord of Blood, and the Elden Beast. Even when I did struggle, it was nowhere near as many attempts as that stupid Dark Elf boss in God of War.

Rage quit is not something I usually do, not because I'm a god at games, but because I'm very stubborn and refuse to do it. It usually doesn't annoy me try stuff again and again either. That said, the House at the edge of time and what is after it, in Kingmaker, almost made me. I'm not familiar with Pathfinder, so there are probably ways to bypass and trivialize what the game throws at you there and I accept that I'm a noob, but it felt like the designers just decided it was time to break your spine and so they did. I ended up cheesing with deadly earth and wall with my main kineticist, which would have been fun, but turned into a reload fest instead, where I encounter something, get absolutely destroyed and then they get absloutely destroyed, because I know they are there. Only later once my friend passed that point and killed the demon for MONSTROUS amounts of XP did I realize that I had made a very bad call without even realizing it. I ended up restarting because I was so pissed that I had missed such a huge payout.

Elden Ring was my first time completing a souls like game, stupid Black Blade and Elden Beast really frustrated me. I was playing a pure mage, and got to them after the mimic nerf so couldn't rely on that. I ended up learning their move sets enough to be able to avoid most of their attacks and basically acted as a dodge tank while black knife tiche slowly grinded down their health. Never thought I would end up playing a tank when I started out as a sorcerer heh.

Tiche was insane. I played the entire game with pretty bad summons. Like the regenerating skeletons. I had low FP and also I liked the challenge. But. Malenia. Full STR build with a somewhat slow weapon... After dying 30 times (and also knowing it was a second phase) i just gave up in fighting fair. Her heals are what did it. I could fight her, but her healing even though my shield? Nah. So I thought about summons that she would not heal from and Googled. A few minutes of farming runes I jag a +10 Tische that like a champ, knockad Melnia down frequently and did waaay more damage than I thought she would. Beat the first phase on my second try.

I usually quit game because it drags on and on. But I had 2 times where I rage quited. First Boss in Ys I - Jenocres, it teleports, you have to run back and forth through arena that has 6 fire breathing statues and you need to time it, and it deals massive damage. Had to put it down for few weeks, but returned and finished whole game (I overleveled for the boss). Shadowrun Daggerfall - twice it deleted my save files just before last mission, this was during Director Cut.update and I think when they added achievements. It still is sitting unfinished to this day.

Elden beast took me ~20 tries with glass cannon mage. Death after death trying to wombo combo it with star or meteors.. By mistake I used Loretta's Mastery and figured out it has more range than f'kin boss... God of war only first Valkyre on hard lvl3 took me like 2 hours to beat, other bosses no more than few tries. I recommend ya trying "Brigandine" turn based strategy for some chill time ftw!

With Tyranny I managed an agro cheese way out of it - I thrown one of the team to take all the agro and have them chase him to the other side of the room, while the rest tatically ran away to the other side... After the one guy was down, they pretty much forgot about the guys at the bottom, and then it's ultra cheesing time with a little bottleneck and slowly killing them. I recall managing to also save, unless I have it wrong. Still, there's always a way to cheese out of things.

Most of my ragequit moments are due to tunnel vision where for some reason I get locked into a mindset where I gotta beat something a certain way. I get this laser focus where another option doesn't even scratch at the back of my mind. Fights that after beating it after a lot of cursing and going online to see if other people struggled I realized that there was a often painfully obvious and simple ways to beat them. There are games that were completely killed off for me because of some rough moments. Pillars of Eternity was one such game as there was this fight deep below your keep that I don't really remember but I was probably under leveled and not ready and instead of backing off and coming back I just gave up. Thats my problem really I don't know how to back off.

Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear, I've played it on release and it was easily the most bugged game I ever played. You literally could get a game breaking bug at any point or encounter an issue that forced you to replay last 1-2 hours. Combined with godawful writing including worst companions in RPGs I barely made it to the end and it took me about 5 times longer than it should. I don't remember fight against Eb being so hard.

The dark elf boss in GoW was pretty tough for me as well. I think what makes him hard is his attacks are really fast and only remains vulnerable for a very short period of time afterward where you can get normal hits in. So even if you avoid his strikes if your not in exactly the right position you don't get a chance to do any damage to him either and eventually he will just whittle down your lifebar. Though I was able to barely squeak by killing him in a semi normal fashion as one of his attacks is parry-able So I would just run around in circles til he did that one attack and try to counter it. But I'm always a big fan of cheese, if I ever replay it I will probably opt for the run around the arena method.

I've only ever rage quite one game, the original Demon Souls. After killing one of the lvl bosses that drops a unique item if you can kill it without dying I got stuck in the ground geometry while walking over to pick it up. I ended up having to warp out of the level and reenter only to find the item had despawned. I was so mad I literally through one of my college text books across the room and into my closet door leaving a rather large hole it it. Promptly ejected the disk, stuck it back in its case and never touched it again.

I have to take some moment to remember those moments... one - encounter on the playground in the Dead City in ATOM RPG. Even if you manage to persuade some mercs to leave it's still hard to win it with endgame character. Two - encounters with crawlers and stalkers. I read every piece of advice and still failed miserably. Spaming flares and setting traps in narrow passages like in Alien movie? Still can fail. Spamming molotovs works but you need money for that and you can have bad luck with items spawn. Another is Marauder - Man of Prey with encounter in the forest in Military Base, it's chapter VII out of 10 iirc - a lot of raiders in very difficult terrain. One stray bullet lead to game over. Micromanagement hell combined with Alien-like experience of being overwhelmed. For some reason your fight in the Tyranny reminds me of some boss fight in Final Fantasy Tactics where a lot of players come unprepared and have to start new game.

The one game that I eventually rage quite and never cared to come back, despite already having sunk at least 200+ hours into the game, was Oblvion with its stupid level scaling. A huge part of the fun in a RPG is to venture too far out too carelessly, get your backside handed over to you and then come back later, much stronger and with great gear and enact your terrible revenge... and the level scaling not only took that away, it made minor enemies unbeatable sometimes. I quit after spending two hours in a fight with a goblin shaman, no special enemy but the normal random low-level encounter, and his two minions, barely able to survive although being a high level character. He healed himself faster than I could hurt him and when I've tried to kill one minion, he had already revived the second one. After sinking 200+ (!) high damage arrows into his head with no apparent effect other than slightly bothering him and not even able to just run away, since he was also _faster_ than I was, I said 'Screw it!', quit, uninstalled the game and could never be bothered to try again.

Hoarfrost stomp and wolves? My condolences....... _/\_ EDIT: As we are on the Elden Ring page..... my greatest struggle was with Rhadan. I came to Caelid early, right after LImgrave. On top of that i didn't play any optimized or by the book build. I just leveled enough for me to use new weapons that i found to be interesting. And as i hadn't unlocked rebirth yet....... you can imagine i came to the festival quite underpowered. Took me 2 days to beat the bugger, even with summons. Now that wasn't the hardest fight, the hardest is Melenia of course. But by Melenia i had the variety of weapons to chose, and enough levels to respec accordingly. The minute i sat down and starting learning her move sets, it was over for her. Only a matter of time. One day of learning and then beating the crap out of her on the next. By one day here, just like with Rhadan, i don't mean 24 hours. I mean one play session of say......2-4 hours. But not with Rhadan. Full two days of 4-6 hours each, and even then i barely won.

I used to get angry at times when playing games as a kid. Nowadays the thing most likely to draw my attention is obtuse controls for a game. That being said, I did have an abusive love-hate relationship with Mass Effect 3's MP mode in the past; that mode specifically. So I usually don't bother with MP modes anymore. In terms of hitting my head against the wall for a difficult part of a game, if that happens I'll just sigh quietly when I finally get past it. Sense of accomplishment only happens if you feel like you're learning from each attempt. If, instead, it's just the AI playing by a different set of rules than the player it can become nothing more than a drag.

I also did GOW4 in Give me God Of War, the problem I had was his projectile variance. Maybe I'm bad at reading telegraphs, but sometimes he delays firing the orbs a half second so he catches you at the end of a dodge. Sometimes he fires 3 orbs and sometimes he fires 6, at what seems like random. Was a very frustrating element to the fight when you cannot afford to make mistakes

I could not beat the final boss of pathfinder wrath without reducing the difficulty from core to story. Ran into the same issue in pillars of eternity but with that game I went back a few saves and got stronger. It’s usually a lack of preparation or being under leveled that causes this problem. I also had a rough time with the final boss of elden ring and metal gear revenge.

@@quint3ssent1a I don't think I did that quest in kingmaker. I had zero major issues with any of the fights other than retrying a few times. Otherwise the final boss attacks just wipe the floor with your party.
