Finally a review not written for quick views. Thanks for clarifying the history of the Obsidian team. They created Fallout but it’s out of their hands now. Most reviewers just say “they made New Vegas”. That is misleading. Yes, the story has some meaningful choices and can be played for more than just the 12 hour main quest. Thanks for reviewing this honestly. The game is great enough to be totally immersed in. That’s all that matters to me.

I think the fact that the game is more digestible as opposed to being an overwhelming, grandiose story where nothing ultimately matters, save 5 choices. Obsidian does a fantastic job of establishing scope, then fleshing the game out within that scope.

The rpg systems of this game were pretty generic and barebones. They’re easily the weakest part of the game. Having said that, the Flaw system is definitely the best idea the game has to offer. But it could definitely use some improvements, like each flaw having more unique downsides instead of sharing the same attribute penalties, and offering flaw-specific perks instead of a generic perk point. Hopefully, Obsidian carries this system over to the sequel and improves upon it.

Gorgon did a good job of expanding on what was there and fits into the main quest well. Eridanos felt tacked on and actually messed up the pacing a bit imo. I think it would’ve worked better as a post main quest adventure or played with a different character if they reworded a couple things.

Honestly, one of my favorite games of the last 10 years. While it's obvious TOW was done on a modest budget, it has so much heart! It's apparent what a labor of love this was for Cain, Boyarsky and their team at Obsidian. I did four runs (twice including both DLCs and once with the hidden 'dumb ending') and absolutely loved it. The writing (dialogue!), companions and many key NPCs like Welles were just wonderful IMO. Incidentally, I agree 100% regarding the DLC suites; I felt the setting, atmosphere, player agency and choice in Peril On Gorgon was *far superior* to Murder On Eridanos. I actually felt that MOE was the weakest, most tedious act of the entire game. Overall, this game is a feel-good RPG-lite experience packed with personality. I cannot wait for the AAA sequel!

Great review. I agree that the full price tag and comparisons to Fallout ("Buy this game: It's not Fallout 76") led to a lot of buyer's remorse. Even now. my recommend list on the right side of my screen has the Skill Up review with the thumbnail title "Exactly What We All Hoped It Would Be" and the main title "The Outer Worlds Revives Its Genre in One Brilliant Stroke.". It's not THAT good, it's just good. I guess Skill Up did not 100% it.

I think this game has done a lot of damages to the reputation of Obsidian, which is not fair i think. POE2's last DLC (Forgotten Sanctum) was released in the end of 2018 and was very good, I really wonder how much the lack of budget damaged TOW.

@@Hekk. I think a lot of companies hire big name past developers to bring hype to their games. I know that a lot of previous Interplay developers get added on to a lot of games now days to try and make games sound good. Issue is, the person gives input, takes a small pay and leaves. Then the company that hired them never uses anything they made or wrote, but lists them as part of the development team. It is quite sad. FNV was pretty great, I just wish we would get away from battle royale type games and put out some good quality single player games like FNV. I am an old school gamer and even bad games 20 years ago were still a hell of a lot better than games now put out by AAA developers. I think Kickstarter, Fig and DLC have just killed creativity. If a game is broken, it is day one patches and "free" DLC that fixes it. Very lame indeed.

I did 120 hrs over 3 playthrough and all dlc, all trophy’s. My take, a solid 8.5 / 10 I also preferred peril dlc over the murder as I enjoyed the setting better. My first playthrough was an intelligence character jack of all trades using whatever I wanted but speech checks and lockpicking were high priority. I explored everywhere did every side quest and collected all the stuff as the typical horder I am. 2nd playthrough was to get the alternative trophies from quests where I had gone a different route than before and I played casually specking more into heavy guns than I did in first run and didn’t bother with speech. 3rd was super nova, here I used fudge muppets paladin hammer build, the prisma hammer fully specked out with a science build was devastating and lots of fun. It was tough on the first planet to reach lvl 7 but once the first planet was done and got the prisma hammer at lvl 7 it was mostly smooth sailing and I really enjoyed super nova with this build. After 3 playthrough there’s really nothing left so I decided my final trophy would be the secret ending and that capped off the game for me in a memorable way. Parvati was my fave companion. It took me 5 years to pick up and try this game, I’m so glad I did.

I can honestly say personally that while I am getting some strong New Vegas vibes (especially as it pertains to the game's satirical nature), The Outer Worlds takes itself far more seriously I find than Fallout: NV. And I truly feel that the creators set out to make more of an homage to Firefly and Serenity than anything else; from the design of the Unreliable to the nature of the crew minus SAM. (In point-of-fact, Parvati is so much like Kaylee that I just call her Kaylee.) This is not a negative, mind you, but a strength as I myself am a Browncoat and this game does what it sets out to do so well. It's SO Firefly in fact that... ----------------------------------------------------------- SPOILERS FOR BOTH SERENITY AND THE OUTER WORLDS DLC IF YOU'VE SEEN SERENITY ---------------------------------------------------------- ...the entire crux/plot/conflict of Peril on Gorgon is ripped wholesale from the third act revelation of Serenity whereas the crew discovers the secret of Miranda is. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- END OF SPOILERS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And I LOVE The Outer Worlds for that. It's likely the closest thing we'll ever get to a fully realized Firefly game or continuation.

I really like this game. But it’s not going to be for everyone. The gameplay is mediocre. Attributes, skills and perks are similar to Fallout, but boring. Combat is like Fallout, but with worse controls, Mortisimal called it ”floaty” and that’s not a bad description. The story is linear with a big mainquest and a few sidequests. No sandbox, no open world exploration, no cornucopia of sidequests. Good story, but limited replayability. So what is there to like you might ask? The storytelling, voice acting and companion relationships are really good. Some of the background designs - savescreens, promotional posters, commercial jingles and so on - are exquisite, for what it’s worth. And the worldbuilding is hilarious. Imagine a future like Idiocracy, where corporations have taken over everything and trained everyone to think exclusively in marketing slogans. But with more horror. From existential horror to body horror. This game can make you actually depressed or nauseous. Some of the shit you encounter is so messed up. That’s what I enjoy. But I guess that this satire might work better for you if you already believe that corporations are kinda evil and running a government ”like you run a business” is the worst idea in history. If you are a lefty in other words.

@@MrTax-mp4ju There's a line from NWA's song Dopeman that I often think of. "If you want to be a dopeman/you must qualify/ don't get high/ off your own supply" Problem with propaganda, especially but not exclusively, in authoritarian systems, is that the purveyors start to believe their own lines. They drink their own cool-aid. The systems acquire a tendency to promote true believers to positions where they make actual decisions instead of just selling the party line. Or the people in authority, even if they themselves are cynical pragmatists, get the propaganda line when they ask for real advice. If present day corporations had completely free and unregulated power to manage education and culture on their own corporate colonies, for a century or two, what we see in The Outer Worlds may not be completely crazy. But the problem is: it doesn't work! And that is as true in our world as in this work of fiction.

Currently dealing w/ Monarch. It's everything I wanted in Fallout 4. It's dark enough to be intellectually stimulating, light enough to feel inspired. While some things seem redundant, the passing npc dialogue is immersive. Ol' Vic stretches my mental elasticity by contrasting scientism & delusion.. (his conversation with Graham is just lovely). Watching their movements/facial expressions, voice fluctuations.. they encourage me to care. Unpredictable consequences, a big emphasis on how useless alcohol is when you want to live, jumping puzzles.. "normal" combat is fun & dungeons don't drag on too long. Every log entry has something worth reading. I want to give Dr. Welles a big huge teddy bear hug though he'd probably call a code 23-19 lmao. Man.. FO4/76 are straight up papier-mâché comparatively.

I actually liked the jack of all trades style of leveling. So many games punish you for not focusing on one or two stats and I feel like I have to choose what I get locked out of. [Edit] I actually have a notebook for fallout new vegas of the when to put how many points into each skill and when to pick which perks. All just to mitigate the locked out of content problem.
@597682 жыл бұрын
I preferred that too. I know that's casual or whatever because honing your build is a big part of RPGs. I enjoy these games for that too. But not when it forces me to be completely locked out of potentially meaningful content. Then it's either risk spoiling the experience for yourself or make these choices without even knowing what you're trading for them. Story choices you would have preferred for RP reasons? Entire questlines? Your build turning out to be terrible for your preferred faction? Not even being able to use some really cool item that you totally would have specced for if you knew it existed? With story choices, the game gives you specific context to make a relatively informed decision. With stats, all you have going in are the description text and abstract character archetype expectations. I don't mind not doing the highest possible damage. I prefer optimizing for being a jack of all trades who can experience more of the game instead. Unfortunately most RPGs don't have generous enough stat allocation or low enough lockout requirements for that. Though of course another simple solution is when games show you all of the unavailable options you're missing out on and let you respec easily.

Never played a game before like this that I appreciated more every time I beat it. I've now finished it 3 times. First playthrough was a slog on Supernova and I did myself a huge disservice comparing it in my mind to Obsidian's Fallouts. It just doesn't have the same depth. It was memorably disappointing when I realized the number of planets available to explore, the limited RPG mechanics and the sparseness of the maps. That said, what we get is all charming and the gameplay loop is tight. The next two runs I played lower difficulties, got through things much more quickly, and hyper specialized my characters. It really benefits from being played this way. It's relatively short, things move quickly, and it doesn't leave you feeling the kind of fatigue you usually feel after a meaty RPG. Here's looking at you, Wasteland 3. Edit: I've since hit 100 percent. I definitely thought Peril on Gorgon was only okay. The DLC's were the last things I had to do. Gorgon was nice in how it could end in different ways, but it just wasnt particularly fun. Eridanos was just pulp to the max and it had the writing it needed to sell the setting. Short and sweet. Kind of like the rest of the Outer Worlds. Overall I loved almost all the writing in TOW, which honestly is the main reason I play RPGs.

The worst part for me were the RPG and character building systems, IMO your character is just too good at everything, it sucks (EDIT: LOL I wrote this before watching and I found this point in your review pretty fast)

I know people hate that this is like fallout competition ((if you can even call it that lol)), but fallout will always be better, but I like to see this game as a special story expander showing us what's happened out there if Pesidon successfully send people to space, ik there's flaws in that's but I enjoy that view since it was created by the original makers of the story. And the best part of fallout wasn't even Bethesda's work, it was Obsidian's creativity and they also worked on this game.

Before I knew it was worked on by fallout devs, I organically made the comparison to fallout, as it feels VERY similar.

1:50 The marketing only tripped up people who didn't understand it as Obsidian's take with FO:NV i.e. choices actually mattering, dialogue intrigue, etc. 24:25 Nothing wrong with AA charging $60 but the price has come down I think I just bought the game + DLC for $35 with no sale on Steam Also just because this is a AA game, how is this game disappointing because it's trying to be AAA? The other problems you mentioned are warranted but how is this less innovative and impressive than Bethesda's shovelware the past few years? The main story despite having two (three if you know what I mean) solid ending paths was more captivating than FO4. If anything Bethesda is COD-ifying Fallout in terms of story whereas Outer Worlds bleeds 70s/80s sci-fi genres and themes but not in a "in your face" manner. The gameplay world while not as open world at least doesn't feel unusually empty like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Borderlands and chances are you'll investigate most locations in the game during normal play with some chances for further exploration to see the rest whenever you want. Meanwhile in FO the remaining 50% of locations you can explore are unimaginative and pure fluff. Say what you want about this AA game failing to be AAA but in terms of worldbuilding, theme, genre, dialogue, and overall story Bethesda is beat on this one and I'd love to see anyone say FO4's story even rivals this game's. I'll take better writing over slightly degraded gameplay any day.

I mean it was by the people who made New Vegas, but Obsidian historically has done sequels on other peoples games or on ips, typically making a better game. Kotor 2, Nwn 2, and New Vegas. The comparison to New Vegas in space is very apt imo, Fallout 3 and 4 are very different games for being all roughly the same mechanics.

Yeah, the marketing sucked. It turned out to be one of those crappy grindy RPG's with very little real story or character depth/choices that are completely unfulfilling. It's more like "Borderlands" than anything. The best way I've heard the story described is "The Better Business Bureau vs Rick from 'Rick and Morty'".

I'm glad I saved this game for so long I got it when it came out but knew I was gonna be waiting for a while to purchase dlc to make the game better so I just experienced character building and the tutorial then just never played it lol

Yeah, I love Obsidian and by all means I do believe that they would be the better developers for the Fallout franchise if they have it... but that marketing stunt really felt bitter.

And now a word from the cheap seats. Great review from an obviously experienced gamer, well thought out and critiqued from that perspective. But what about from the position of someone who spends 2-3 hours a week playing the game (out of maximum 6 hours)?

Thanks, thinking of buying but I still think too much money is asked for a double A game. I am becoming used of waiting a few years and snag mediocre games up for a few bucks, preferable on gog too!
