I have owned this rifle for about 4 years now. It is my go to scout rifle, coyote rifle. Set up with a Nikon 223 scope, HSM blue tip ammo and it is a coyote killing machine at 400 yards. Love the size and the way the rifle handles in the field. As you say, "it's not sexy" but much like a Glock it's as practical as practical gets and reliable. Easy to throw in the back of a truck, on an ATV, strap to a pack or carry in a Kifaru gun bearer (my personal favorite). Just an all around great EDC woods rifle for scouting, varmint hunting, target shooting and plinking.

A great and well timed video, Hickok45. As soon as Timney or Geiselle start coming out with custom triggers for this, I'm quite sure the mag release problem will be addressed. Threaded barrel, AR magazines? I think this Mossie will be the next great kit gun following the AR and the Ruger 10/22. I'm already impressed with the gun and it's price and it's still in it's diaper stage. I believe Mossberg's R&D department has hit one out of the park with this one. As soon as you see a custom barrel maker get in the mix, I think this rifle will become another American legend.

Hickock, I can see farmers & ranchers using it as a varmint control rifle. Put some loaded AR mags in the pick up, tractor cab, sprayer or combine, grab a scoped carbine and go. Coyotes, groundhogs, prairie dogs will need to dig deeper holes or move to the neighbor's place.

I picked up a Patrol in .223 and a Savage Axis in .223. I have ARs, in PA, you weren't allowed to use a semi auto till this year for hunting so you were limited to a bolt, pump or lever action. In shooting the Mossberg, it is quickly becoming my favorite .223 to shoot. It is the funnest bolt gun I have ever played with. Mossberg hit the nail on the head with using AR mags. Availability of magazines was the main reason I chose it over the savage and ruger.

My personal reason to buy this gun was that I do not have an AR rifle, I have an AR pistol to use as a pdw. As such I don't want to switch out uppers so the MVP fills the niche of further extending the reach of my stockpile of 556. With the right ammo type and charge as well as shot placement you could hunt medium game.

Very nice rifle. I have the MVP Flex which just has a quick detach to switch between a traditional rifle stock and an M4 style stock with a pistol grip. I'm really pleased with the trigger as well. It puffs along with brass and aluminum cased ammo, but doesn't like the steel cased varieties much. It's hard for the bolt to strip the round unless you put some real authority behind it. Given the fact that the bolt has a small shelf that extends down to pick up the round, I'd avoid the cheap steel cased. Barnul makes some nice Zinc Plated steel case that let's the round slide out of the magazine better and they are just as cheap to buy. 62 grain ammo produces 1 inch groups for me at 100 yards with a cheap UTG 3-9 scope.

I bought one of these when they first came out, and I made up some low power loads for it using Trail Boss powder. I don't remember the details of the load, but I have a cut-off .223 case with a paperclip soldered around the base for a handle that I just use as a powder measure. It gives a load that approximates a .22 magnum. I also recently bought a couple of the .223 modded cases that will take a .22 airgun pellet and power it with a 12 gauge shotgun shell primer. It's quiet enough for backyard shooting. All 3 rounds (the full power .223, the low-power .22 mag-like load, and the .22 pellet load) all hit very close to the same point of aim at close range, and at about 75 yards the full-power and .22 mag-like loads are within about 1" of each other.

I like bolt actions because ALL THEY ARE is a bolt, a trigger group, and a barrel with a chamber and receiver milled into it. There is very little that can break on these guns. You can also load these with “squib” loads for plinking and for shooting with a silencer. If you have a 308, take a cast lead 0.312” bullet (pistol bullet for 32acp), and “slug” the barrel to get the rifling groove diameter. Then get a bullet sizing die in that diameter. Size the 0.312 bullets through that die and you can load them into 308 cases with about 5gr Bullseye. You can do this with a Mosin Nagant too, because it uses a bullet diameter of 7.62mm. For the MVP, which is 223, you can also get a 22lr chamber adapter. It offsets the 22 case so that the firing pin hits the rim. It then goes through the chamber adapter and catches the rifling of the barrel. They are very simple, very easy to clean and maintain, and they will last longer than you if you take good care of them. There are bolt action rifles from the 1800s that are still fully functional today.

I bought one a few years ago. The "iron" sights rattled off almost immediately. The bore went south after less than 2,000 rounds and started to cause bullets of all weights to tumble. Bolt wobbles and magazines dont want to lock into place. Cycling a bolt gun is pretty easy unless the magazine is moving so much rounds get jammed in the chamber because they were at the wrong angle. That part on the bolt at 3:29 is what picks up the round. When it or the pin holding it in place break youre done shooting. The mag release is a joke. Only good thing is its very accurate and easy to suppress.
@itsame41639 жыл бұрын
Does not look like much but boy can this think knock a hole in something. My Mossberg MVP 5.56 has only had a jam if I used a P Mag. all others have worked great. When I first tried to sight it in I had a problem. Not the scope the rifle but the user. Make sure the scope is securely. if not you will have my problem as I was trying to ZERO it in.. Made all types of adjustments up down sideways only for it to shift on its mount. My Bad.. Now I can shoot a 1 1/2 pattern at 150 yards on a table stationary mount. I good Rifle that will not brake the bank and a solid shooter.. Bolt Action is the way to go unless you have LOW T then I understand a AR or AK.

@MCBobbyE9 жыл бұрын
famoustatertot probably just because of the added weight
@Xtorin_Housecat_Ohern9 жыл бұрын
famoustatertot if you are using proper subsonic ammo then yes it does reduce the recoil, if you are still using full power ammo the change will not be noticeable.
@jonesclantd9 жыл бұрын
famoustatertot Yes, a silencer does tend to have a similar effect to a muzzle brake as the gas entering the silencer will impact the baffles in such a way to create a force that counteracts some of the recoil. It is often not quite as effective at eliminating felt recoil as a purpose-built muzzle brake is.
@stinkyfungus9 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, Depending on the design and size of the can, the weight can come into play, heavier gun = lower perceived recoil. Also the muzzle blast is retarded, and released at a lower velocity than would be the norm unsupressed, when firing standard velocity ammo so that can have an effect as well. However, this effect can be offset somewhat by the higher than normal grain weight bullets when shooting subsonic ammo (subsonic rounds for rifles typically use a heavier bullet, with a reduced powder charge to keep the bullet muzzle velocity below 1100 fps) a heavier bullet leaving the muzzle will generate more recoil than a lighter bullet of the same caliber, see Newton's 3rd for why.

Any thoughts on this vs. the Ruger Gunsight Scout? i have the Ruger and love it, wouldn't mind a .223 verity. Would give me an excuse to start reloading .223...

***** Yeah, the mags due cost more on the Ruger. But cycling both in a gun shop the Ruger Scout in .223 felt much smother to me. I know MVP has a big following too.

In 308 scout setup with a PWS FSC this is a MAK90 of bolt guns. Nothing 2 or 4 legged it can't take in North America. Magpul mags work great, but it's a bolt gun so relying on the magazine isn't a requirement. The .223 shouldn't have been a thing for the MVP, an 18" 7mm-08 would have been great.
