Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

I love your videos!! I had a below the knee amputation this past May. I like u had had several surgeries on my ankle. I crushed my heel in 2006. I have had numerous surgeries, on April 23rd I had my 3rd fusion surgery. 4 weeks after I developed a sever infection which resulted in my amputation. My husband and I have talked about amputation over the years due to the constant pain I was in, well the choice was made for us after I developed the infection which had eaten away most of the muscle in my foot, I didn’t know I was developing a infection due to I was still in a cast. I got up one nite to use bathroom and blood just started pouring out my cast by my toes. When my cast was removed it looked like my foot had exploded!!! Watching your journey has helped me so much!! Hoping to start the process of getting my prosthetic this coming week!!!

We've had this conversation before on this channel. And believe it or not I literally think of you every time I scratch my foot with the other one. I said it before and I'll say it again. You need to partner with the creator of iWalk and make the iScratch. A bedtime prosthesis whose "sole" purpose in existence is to scratch the other foot. In the meantime while you wait for technology to catch up to your needs just duct tape a back scratcher to a yardstick and keep it beside the bed.

@@FootlessJo It's time to ask a deeper question. It seems there's two ways this can be annoying... Existing foot itches, you attempt to scratch with ghost foot and nothing happens. (If I understand you this is your plight in the video) The other case, ghost foot itches, you attempt to scratch it but it isn't there to scratch. I can see how both would happen. And I can see how the second scenario could eventually go away when ghost sensations go away. But I don't see the first problem ever going away. Lefty is always gonna itch, end of story. I'm thinking this may account for different amputees saying it will or will not go away??? Perhaps the paradox is that they speak of a different issue in the first place??? Even so, even if the ghost itching did go away, the inability to scratch the actual foot is annoying, but may not be as annoying if/when your brain is finally convinced you don't even have a right foot and it doesn't give you false hope to attempt a scratch.

I can't imagine how this would feel, but I understand how frustrating it might be. This might be the opposite of what you experience, but you might find it interesting. I was having some foot pain and went to see a podiatrist. She offered to inject her 'special' cocktail of various pain relieving ingredients to see if that would help. Unfortunately, my foot and most of my calf went completely numb for nearly 4 days. I could see that it was still there, but had no sensation. I would kick into things and not know it, only to find cuts and bruises later. I would fall over while walking at times too. Luckily, it returned to normal. I did not go back to see her either. I suppose (and hope) in time, your phantom itching will subside as well. Take care!

Try this: I don't have toes on my left foot, and sometimes I feel an phantom itchy on them. When It happens, I put a mirror (actually the open door of my closet) beside my right foot, the one I have toes on, so It looks like I have toes on mi left foot too. After that, I scratch the toes on my right foot and, in the reflection, It looks like Im scratching my left foot toes. My brain gets cheated, and sometimes It helps to reduce the itchy. This is also used as therapy for phantom pain. I don't know if you have tried this or if It could be useful when you are missing a leg, but i hope It works for you.

Footless Jo it might seem silly or frivolous, but for someone who is not going through the same thing as you (or others like you in this little KZbin community), it really helps to create a nice reference point. Makes it super relatable. Plus it is funny, in a tragically frustrating “I can’t sleep without itching my god damn foot” kind of way.

I don't have any phantom sensations from my foot, but then I was only three when I lost it. I think the most annoying thing about being an amputee is being unable to wear my prosthesis because of an infection. I am so so so thankful to the person who got me an iWalk. While it's annoying not to wear my leg,m the iWalk makes it much less annoying. (wait there's more!) Another annoying thing is leg cramps at night. or stump cramps!

This may sound gross and likely in horrible “taste,” but it may be of some research value in learning more about the phenomenon of phantom sensation. If someone that is intimate with you were to put the residual in his/her mouth, where would the phantom foot be in term of sensation?
