This is hands down the best corn bread I have ever tasted. With or without sugar, I bet you will agree!

I use a pre-heated iron skillet to get a lovely crust on the sides and the bottom. I have never used Bisquick but will try this recipe next time I cook some peas with snaps.

I love cornbread! As you are so astute to mention, sugar is not required unless you have a sweet tooth. In the past, I've used coarse-grained cornmeal for an unsweetened rendition (like one might serve w/blackeyed peas and collards), and a finer grain w/sugar for a "dessert." As long as the corn and sugar are not GMO, eat to your heart's delight! But do look into a healthier, homemade sub for Bisquick--your heart/loved ones will thank you.: Thanks for sharing such nutritious LOVE!

love the title. I love sweet cornbread and I am from Texas. First time I had sweet cornbread I thought it was cake without frosting!

Loved the video. We bought a replacement handle for the cookstove online. Just google the make of your stove and then the word parts, and you should find lots of places that sell the stove handles.

I use the bisquick (or generic/other brand equivalents) as well. Saves a bit of time. Bisquick has the shortening powder and leavening agents already in it, so the bit of baking powder you use is appropriate to account for the cornmeal. The addition of the THREE eggs (My kind of girl!) and the butter is why yours is so moist and luscious looking. Next time, i will try this. BTW, i live in the Florida Panhandle, and they eat sweet cornbread too. ;-) But usually, it is with jiffy corn muffin mix.

It is so cool that you eat sweet cornbread, I love sweet corn bread but my hubby likes regular, so the way I fix that problem is I make half the pan sweet and the other half will be regular.

I agree. I have made corn Bread in a Dutch Oven outside and I have to say its the best.

I love a small amount of sugar in my cornbread, but I add sugar to about everything I cook. I add a small amount of sugar even to my beans, I use bacon grease, don't normally add the meat, even though my DH loves the meat in the beans. Beans, cornbread, fried taters, and bacon! Now that's a good country meal, yum, yum. Have some home made relish or ketchup, green onions with this, and now your're talkin. Thanks Ded for sharing!

This southern girl loves cornbread with sugar. Iron skillets are the best for getting a lovely brown crust on the bottom and for frying chicken. I will try the bisquick. As for the oven, you can find anything online. :)

How did your oven catch on fire? Really curious about this because, I have always been worried about using the self cleaning ovens for just that reason...catching on fire! I can't wait to try your cornbread recipe.

I never keep it that long. For food storage I use the old flour or wheat to grind. Right now, I enjoy a few things, but I guess with an oxygen absorber you could get 3-5 years or maybe a bit longer.

What could be used in lace of milk? I love cornbread but cannot eat milk. Do you think gluten free bisquick can be used?

A gal after my own heart. I got advise from a subscriber as to where to find parts so I will probably go to that route. I like to have a handle, but old Betsy will be around for a long-long time.

The springs broke on my oven door so I just us a bungee cord on it. LOL! My husband wants to buy them, but I told him the stove is on its last leg anyway why waste the money when it is working. Gail and Les

Hey deb... Do you think you can put some recipes up for us slow pokes like me? I had an avocado stove; it didn't have a pilot but a match worked find. Anyway, about a year ago I was talked into get a plain new one.... and I hate it with a purple passion. It has an electronic ignition, yuck! It doesn't burn as hot and takes for ever to pressure up my canner. Now I'm trying to find an old model stove and that's hard around here.

Oh Honey where is your cast iron frying pan makes the best cornbread in the world.. heat the pan in the oven for about 10 minutes and pour your mixture in the pan.. you forgot to tell us what temp the oven is set?
