Who are we?
We are a European couple from Germany (Alex) and the Netherlands (Mandy), sailing around the Med on our 36ft sailboat. 12 months ago we started our journey in Greece with little sailing experience, figuring things out as we go, thinking we know what we are getting ourselves into. Our goal is to circumnavigate the world on our 36ft Beneteau. Sailboat life is super different from land life. It is fantastic and pretty rough at times. see the little things tries to FIND HAPPINESS BY DOING THINGS THAT ARE HARD. Join us on this journey and let's find happiness together!
If you have any COMMENTS, suggestion, questions or feel to need to praise (or scold) us, leave a comment down below and we’d happily write you back :). Of course a THUMBS UP is ALWAYS APPRECIATED very much so and helps us a lot!

Your fishing line will give the lure more surface action if you close pin it up as high as you can reach on the back stay. Plus it will warn you by hearing the close pin snap when the fish bites the lure.

Noise is prop spinning. Put in reverse. Also you can try to adjust your engine shaft alignment Consider furling prop
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Nah, we're not a fan of putting our engine in reverse when sailing, we prefer to keep it spinning freely. But the noise went a ways after 7 days. The cutless bearing found it's place and now doesnt bother us with it's squeaking noise anymore! All peace is restored on Blue :):)

Alex + Mandy so cool.Well done - loved it ... ok guys - one day .. save power - put a tiller autopilot onto your Hydrovane... It will steer for you if you loose your main autopilot - mmm it will happen. We did not do it and had to HANDSTEER for 3 days.. be well and drink coffee..

For rather new members in the sailing world, you look relaxed, confident in the handling and the navigation of the boat. but also capable of managing the life aboard. I am glad to see that everything's been rolling out smoothly out there and you spend so nice, enjoying unique moments. If you allow me a remark, sometimes I find it difficult to hear what's been said because your voices tend to be overshadowed by the rest of the ambient noise. I think this can be easily overcome during video editing. In any case congrats and fair winds throughout your voyage.
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nikolas, thanks so much for your sweet compliments :):) Happy to hear you enjoy it :) The problem with the noise is that we were going so fast, there was just so much noise around! The water was incredibly loud, it was crazy. Unfortunately we can't get all of that out during the editing. We did manage to make it better, but some channels manage so well in noisy conditions, we still don't know how they do it 😂 Cheers!

The sailing looks fab, lovely conditions. Am wondering if the high pitch noise you are hearing is the propeller rotating the prop shaft. Test by selecting astern with your gear lever, this will lock the shaft, stopping it, the noise and unnecessary wear on bearings, that is if the prop shaft turning is the source of the noise. Buy a folding prop, leave gearbox in reverse when sailing, sorted, no rotating shaft, no undue stress on gearbox or premature wear on cutlass bearing. Fair winds. :-)
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely perfect conditions, I agree ! it was the cutless bearing, after a week or so it was gone. It probably just needed to settle in :) We don't really like blocking our prop, so we never do. We've been thinking of getting a folding prop, but well, it's all about costs and priorities. And that one kept ending up low on the list. Maybe one day! Cheers :)

Very exciting - you are living the dream. Love the shot of the map on the jib - very creative. After much back slapping and feeling proud of my solar panel installation and all the money I saved doing it myself the time came to start playing with the Sailomat wind steering that came with the boat and discovered the solar panels are in the way. Your last video reminded me of my lack of foresight. Back to the drawing board. Se la vie - Cheers.

@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barry! It started off pretty rough but became blissfully relaxing. 4 more days like this and life can't get any better, right! Energy balance was really good in the end. We didn't have super sunny days (and also it was winter, so the angle of the sun is not optimal) and we were going south, so often the panel was shaded by the sails. But in the end we still had a very good positive balance after over 4 days. And no engine at all :) So very pleased!

That HVane was the BEST addon investment you ever made !! My rudder tangs snapped from the shaft an lost rudder control. Having a secondary rudder would have saved me a lot work getting back to shore. I can see why HV is SO EXPENSIVE, like getting a FULLTIME helmsman on long crossing. Plus having an emergency rudder built in is a WIN-WIN. It pays for itself on the first major crossing .... 👍👍👌⛵

As for the noisy propeller, don't you but the gear in reverse IOT keep it from turning ? Concerning the cumbersome handling of the spinnaker pole if one day you find a huge amount of money a telescopic carbon fiber whisker pole might be a good idea especially when it's only the two of you handling the boat. 136 nm - not too bad at all.
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
nah we don't like to put it in gear, we prefer to keep it spinning freely. But the good news is that after 7 days the noise went away. The cutless bearing has now settled and all peace and quiet had been restored on Blue :) Ooooh yeah we really wanted a telescopic pole.. but yeah indeed. Damn the money!! We now got one second hand for a veeerryy good price. So yeah, then you go for it right! Cheers :) :)

Life can be easy.! You could see your initial concerns floating away one by one, and within twenty four hours a lot of weight had been lifted from your shoulders, making you at one with the situation. All your hours and days of preparation have gelled together to get you to this moment. Enjoy the carefree days, they help you through the days that are not so pleasant.! Wishing you, good health.

Hi Davy! yeeaaah it felt so amazing to slowly get away from the world in a way. I mean the ocean is part of the world, but somehow.. it isn't. It was fantastic. And the more often you get sails and days like this, the more addicted you get to it and you keep going to get more of it :) Cheers!

Look at your shaft when you here the noise....its your propeller turning. You can't here it when the engine is running.
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s the turning for sure. But we heard it too when the engine was running ;) it stopped after a week. Never heard it again. So most likely it was the new cutless bearing. Ah well. Solved now anyways 😁👍

How would you manage poling out that headsail single-handing? Using a 3rd sheet, definitely, but I think I would switch the pole over and brace with the genoa still furled. Lastly, unfurl the sail, sheeting it through the jaws using that extra sheet. Just have to break things into a steady sequence I think.
@miketcq8

Hi Alex, rigging the pole is critical. Far too many poles snap against the rigging if they not setup correctly. I do love your channel, hope to see you and Mandy out on the water some time. Fair winds...

Hehe he was joking a bit there :) we are very meticulous about rigging it well. We have since then figured out better ways and are excited to try out our new rigging ideas! Thanks for your concern though, that's very sweet :) Cheers!

A pity to miss seeing Cadiz, a truly beautiful city. Isn't that the point of travelling?
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no :) we can't see every place we visit. Sometimes we just go places to get things done and that's alright :) We mainly enjoy the sailing and the freedom of being able to move. A city is often a city and this year we decided to spend most of our time working on the boat so next year we can explore beautiful islands that have a lot of nature to offer. We are more in it for the nature than the cities to be honest! But a city now and then is definitely very enjoyable :) Cheers

Unless you have a hydraulic transmission, keeping your engine in neutral might well cause severe damage to your transmission. As it spins, the engine is not running, so there is no cooling for the transmission. Plus, just as a helicopter with a non-spinning blade will plummet, but one with a spinning blade will stay in the air, your spinning propeller is cutting your speed down. A fixed prop has some resistance, but not the kind of resistance that a spinning one does. No sense in coming into port with no transmission after a much longer trip than if you had protected your transmission.
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a topic people start wars for and there’s no clear warning nor recommendation from Volvo. The helicopter theory has been debunked by a physics paper stating that “it depends” based on the tilt of the blades. We’re team free spin. we don’t want to stress the gearbox by locking it in reverse when spinning due to speed through water. We’re full time cruising for 2 years, the gearbox didn’t melt yet

Hey have you squeezed out all the air out from the axle seal after you put the boat back on water? Water doesn't lubricate the seal if there is air inside the seal.
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Boutti, yeah we did! Always do. After the firsts time we went into the water (episode 3 or so) where we had a badly leaking shaft seal and had to haul out again immediately to replace it, we learned how to do that hehe. Thanks for the tip though :)

Up until now it has been amazing. It’s definitely a great boat for the med and also seaworthy for Atlantic sailing (but obviously it’s not a westerly 48 oceanmaster ;) We will cross the Atlantic with this one, and many did with similar boats. 393, 390,..

13:52 "moves at a certain speed in neutral" .... keep checking cutless/stuffing box, that harmonic hum would make me a little nervous. All thru hull connections makes me nervous. Assume you have bilge alarms set ? Assume hum stops if in gear or stop shaft from rotating ?

Very good video. Question: How does your spinnaker pole attach to the mast? Is there a track or only one attachment point?
@seethelittlethings
@seethelittlethings 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ron, thanks! We have a mast eye to attach the pole to. A track would be awesome! Also because we could then leave the pole on the mast when not in use. But this is not so cheap to install. So we keep using the mast eye and it works perfect :) Cheers

Hi Oliver! Eet smakelijk 🍻
