As a man, the desperation is not being able to do all this. I am quite happy with supporting a wife and kids, as long as the wife is not a slut and the kids are in my custody. I love the idea of being able to provide for my family and have a loving, thriving family. I do not mind busting my ass for this. I would feel inadequate if I just sat and let someone else take care of things. I need to be capable and loved, both of these are necessities.

I spent 2 years digging myself out of the hole, I worked 3 jobs and saved every penny only buying what would keep me alive or if it would pay me back double within a week. I saved enough to buy a house with cash and get out of debt. It was a fixer upper 2 story on 2 acres. Closed all bank accounts. I only use cash. I live my dream, no stress, tiny bills, created a homestead on my 2 acre lot. I work from home. I buy local. That was 11 years ago. If only someone told me to do this when I was 18.

This brought a few tears to my eyes because when Joe said “you just can’t wait to run away” he hit the nail on the head with that phrase, because it perfectly well describes how I feel, and god knows how many other people out there do too! His advice seems to have struck a chord of inspiration deep within my soul to finally sort my shit out! I knew today was different when it started with my 21 year old son and I talking about my depression, and then I watched him put his boot on the wrong foot, which made me laugh like I haven’t laughed in a very long time. Shortly after, I come across this short clip of Joe on about his favourite quote and giving advice that brought tears to my eyes but has flicked a switch on within me. Thank you Mr Rogan and thank you, Finley, my son. 😊

I hope you cherish every moment that is given to you with your son and find more reasons to laugh even harder. Depression is not easy at all, I don't know what exactly are you going through, but I do want to send words of encouragement to stay strong and to keep reminding your self that every rule has an exception. Not all men wait to run away, some actually find ways to take all the life in. And I am sharing this as a sister of a person who took his own life last year at age 38, leaving behind my two beautiful nephews who are making me stronger and willing to overcome everything coming my way. I also work as a psychologist with disabled people and on daily basis I meet families who struggle to survive, because part of my job is to find ways for them to organize charities for food, cloths and place to live. Sometimes that gives me a perspective on things, but mostly the hardships I face constantly in my life bring heavy burden on my shoulders. So please remind your self of what you thought today, write a note with the quote you like to remind you everyday, sometimes those kind of things work with baby steps. And keep on going tomorrow and the next day. To you Darren and to Finley your son, I wish all the good things coming your way.

Then hope it's a big enough window to grow because you better maximize opportunity before someone changes their mind. Plus, you will be tested 3 to 5 times hard not to go backward. After you complete this task in most cases, you are ambitious. But you will only wake up. After you hit the ceiling of your profession. Chances are your wife isn’t happy either & statistics show she will likely be the one to pull the trigger as it only benefits her life. Don’t let her pull the rug out from under you man. Your kids are adults at 18. After that your conscience should be clear. Then you can start a new life, one where you’re happy. More money in your pocket, less financial stress, no miserable human constantly fighting with you...maybe just a dog & a fun quiet life. The happiest guys I know over 50 are divorced or were never married & single. Not always. Depends on your life choices when it comes to work. I'm well past FRA and I'm still working full time. Can't remember the word used but the Japanese have a term for people who continue to work when they are of an age they could retire. The Japanese idea is if you do something you enjoy doing, are good at it and can make money doing it, there is no reason for you to stop working. Keep going. I tried retirement several times. I now know why people fail and die after they retire. It drove me nuts. So I went back to work. Now I'm happy. That's better than going crazy at home. I've taken reasonably good care of myself and don't have any physical need to stop working. If that changes, I'll stop working. But as of right now, every morning I get up and go to work because I want to.

I know that feeling. I closed my business and took a job working in a harbour - great surroundings and great people, but it wasn’t for me. I eventually went into temping and with no relevant qualifications or experience I was offered a job I would never have seen myself doing but it’s great. I mean, I own a pool business and it’s pretty secure. I drive around cleaning peoples pools and they pay me every month. Plus repairs, and installs. Moneys great. Make about $60,000 a year. No employees. Just me. Occasionally I sub-contract work out and that helps. Yeah I could lose all my customers and then be fucked, I think about that all the time but it’s been 5 solid years and so far so good. Don’t see it going anywhere and I’m only 28. Drive a brand new truck as well so it’s reliable. Maybe the pool business is an exception to this idea?

If you are hungry like I was at the time I had a leaky roof, swallow your pride, like I had to do and find out where a poor person's pantry is and get a box of food. The 1st time for everything is the worst, but once the house is dry again and once you have food in the house an food in your belly, you will have overcome fear and pride and gained confidence in yourself, gotten some energy from the food, now, use a search engine to look for a job. There are Gov grants for higher education and training if you want to change what you do for a living. Take this time by the horns/reigns and make some positive plans to make better money. Get creative. If you have a hobby, try turning it into a way to make money. After my stroke, my physical therapist taught me the rudiments of knitting to get my fine motor skills back. I knitted hats, 100s of them and gave them to the Church that had the food pantry at Christmas time and the head Pastor was so thrilled he had tears steaming down his face with relief and gratitude because he and the Elders of the Church were praying for hats to give to the poor of the neighborhood and the poor of his congregation because they had no money to buy any and no one had knitted any. That was at 5 pm on Christmas Eve, 2011. One can never know what joy and needs can be fulfilled by sometime as insignificant as knitted hats of all sizes and colors. I had inherited all the yarn from my mom after she died, so it didn't cost me a thing. BTW, I was so poor, I could not fix the furnace, nor buy the bottled gas that went into the tank in the yard, so for 4 years, I lived in brutal, snowy, icy Winters. I knitted gloves and socks for my self and wore 3 hats 1 on top of another and then a hoody on top of it all, and I wore several pairs of flannel sleep pants with sweat pants that were Dad's before he died. I knitted dressed like that and listened to Mom and Dad's old transistor radio for company coz I couldn't afford TV or the electric, but could afford batteries for the radio and 1 low wattage battery operated light. I had only a decades old microwave as it was the only thing that worked in the kitchen, but usually just opened up cans of food and ate the food cold right out of the can. It's surprising how one can survive with next to nothing and with no one to talk to if you put your mind to it. I couldn't walk, due to my stroke, but I inherited Mom's wheel chair to get around on. I was upper-middle class before my stroke, but gave most of my money to my impoverished parents. I lost my career's position, my health insurance and life insurance as well as my weekly income, my house, my boat, everything but my car as I had just paid it off when I lost my position (due to my stroke) as a V.P. at a 23,000 employee organization. I had worked there just a a few days before my 10th year anniversary. Therefore, I was just a few days away from being vested. That meant I would not get my pension or any benefits I would have gotten if only my stroke didn't happen for just 5 more days. Then I wouldn't have become so poor. But after a year, I qualified for Social Security Disability and Medicare. Those benefits were not enough to raise me out of poverty, however. When there is a drive to improve one's self and one's predicament, one will always find a way to survive. Good Luck and strength to you.

As a wife, when my husband comes home, I try to reduce his stress instead of add to it. In return, he also helps reduce my stress by assuming some of the mundane responsibilities like taking out the trash without me asking, or putting the dishes away after they have been washed, men and women need each other, its not a competition its working each day to show one another they are loved and appreciated.

Put aside that money, and give yourself that window, to better, not only your own life, but your child's and your partners as well. You're meant to be a team, don't do it alone. Above all else, LOVE your partner, and LOVE your child. You don't need money, but you do need love, just like everyone else. Recognize you're responsibility to nurture your family, not yourself, and your family should nurture you as well. DONT ABANDONE YOUR FAMILIES, AND ESPECIALLY YOUR BABIES! LOVE THEM! THEY NEED YOU. Love isn't easy, it's a choice. A conscious decision, every day, every time they do something that bugs you, LOVE THEM. Don't live a life of desperation. That is also, a conscious decision, but it seems easier in the moment, for whatever reason. It's not easier. Not for you, not for those you leave behind.

It depends on why she's financially dependent on you in the first place. Is she a drug addict? A compulsive gambler? Bad at choosing men in her life? A cleptomaniac? Schizophrenic? Or is she disabled? Injured? Victim of a crime? And if so, who was she financially dependent on before you? How'd she support herself (and you, presumably) before you entered the workforce? All of that matters because that either makes you her savior or her enabler.
