Idk I just love the guitar tone on To Mega Therion. It also has a consistent theme to it making it feel a bit like a concept album idk that's just my take. Honestly CF has a very uneven discography in my opinion. I could never get in to Pandemonium and MT is just ok. It's like a slightly more mature version of Hellhammer but still quite primitive. Monotheist is a monstrous album. It is one of the bleakest most depressing and dark albums I've ever heard.

I absolutely love To Mega Therion! It's one of my favorite 80s metal albums, easily. The intro is just so MASSIVE, and one of the all-time great album openers imo. And after that it's just banger after banger, with not a single dud besides (maybe) Tears in a Prophets Dream, which is simply an experimental break before the epic closer Necromantical Screams. Circle of the Tyrants is a stone cold classic, but then there's Dawn of Meggido's amazing French horn chorus, and the one-two punch of Usurper/Jewel Throne... For me this album is incredible and absolutely deserving of its reputation. I could never get into Monotheist, which is surprising since I adore Triptykon. To me Monotheist just feels like a less mature manifestation of Triptykon. Maybe I just feel to listen to it more...

Discovering your videos and various playlists about the different genres and subgenres of heavy metal it makes me realize that you have a vast amount of knowledge pertaining to such subject matters. I really wish I could have got more into metal and been a bigger fan of it however I need a lot of variety as far as music genres go. However I will say that heavy metal is what got me so interested in so many other types of music. There are quite a few bands that most would consider metal, thrash, or industrial, sludge, etc that are basically my Staples for when I need that fix. In general I wanted to spiral out and find other types of music so to speak. Celtic Frost monotheist is a huge favorite especially the song dying God coming into human flesh. Probably their greatest work. After watching some of your videos I added to my Spotify quite a few metal bands that I used to listen to on a regular basis. Since metal is pretty much my roots other than some of the classic rock stuff from the '60s and '70s. I recall listening to: I hate God, corrosion of conformity, acid bath, testament, Exodus, kreator, lamb of god, gojira, isis, neurosis, meshuggah, high on fire, an about 4 dozen other metal bands. I'm so glad that I'm not the only metal fan that never really got into Disturbed. There's maybe about two or three songs of theirs that I actually like and that's about it. Also they completely ruined the song sound of silence.

For me I listen to Catch 33 more like a sludge metal or drone metal album more than a progressive metal, or djent record. It’s a freezing cold, hypnotizing, whirling vortex of darkness and terror. For me it’s like Djent’s cleanly produced answer to Sleep’s Dopesmoker, and as a fan of that style of single song experience albums, Catch 33 freaking rules. Koloss though is also extremely underrated. Easily, Meshuggah’s most accessible record

Koloss got enough praise. It has music that is heavy and juicy. But here is what Catch 33 revolutionized 1. Catch 33 uses Superior Drummer "Drum Kit from Hell" which was recorded by Fredrik Thordendal and Tomas Haake. This set an industry standard for what professional drum machine should sound like. Every music producer in metal used this. 2. The amount of paradoxes in the lyrics and the meaning it hides is too good and needs it appreciation. 3. First album to use 8 string guitars to it's optimal use and sound. Nothing and I were just experiments that perfectly combined best of both worlds to produce this album. 4. Uses Autotune which was very new when released. 5. Only continuous, concept album by Meshuggah 6. Last time Fredrik or Marten played bass in an album or live. 7. The amount of 33's hidden in the whole album is just insane and hidden in plain sight. 8. A lot of ambience and silence than any album of theirs. Overall it feels like a masterpiece that deserves what it has received from fans. Koloss doesn't deliver equally but it is a banger of an album.

Watch the CD counter while listening to Catch 33...Mehuggah actually uses real time along with traditional time signatures to fold space-time. Love the layers at .33 and 3.33...Koloss is cool but its like Meshuggah for beginners. Wow, just put on the disk to make sure I was right and I found something new..The weird guitar layering that starts at .33 ends at 1.06 making the line run for 33 seconds while the rhythm keeps the odd grove behind it...I'm a nerd.

Funny! I never could get my head around Mardraum, but Below The Lights immediately grabbed by attention. When I think about Celtic Frost, Into the Pandemonium is still my favorite because it's just one of the most out there and unexpected releases of 1987. I love "Circle of the Tyrants" and the closing song from To Mega Therion, but I'm more likely to reach for Morbid Tales if I'm in the mood for the earlier CF stuff. I gave up on Megadeth after Rust In Peace. I've heard just about all the studio releases at one point or another but Dave Mustaine's voice and personality pretty much alienate me on that band.

Catch 33's always been a weird one for me and I agree with everything you said about it. Honestly I kinda feel like Immutable is borderline a remake of that album but the ideas work much better. Ironically enough the Megadeth album I legitimately think is overrated is Rust In Peace. I know, I know, everyone loves Holy Wars and Hangar 18, but honestly I feel like it's missing some of that punk edge that makes the first three albums so special, especially Peace Sells. Meanwhile one I think people tend to sleep on is The System Has Failed, which is a shame 'cause that album has some real bangers on it.

Beyond the Within from Enslaved is definitely one of their unsung albums. Also a favorite of mine but Below the Lights nudged it out by a hair for me though. Your observation about the instrumentation on Mardrum is spot on, there is a level of musicianship that touches more of that frenetic black metal energy but it’s still there on Below just a bit more refined. Here’s my thing with To Mega Therion. I am a die hard Tom G. Warrior fan but a lot of the music on TMT is just kind of messy and almost lazy if you ask me. The riff from the usurper is completely reused during (beyond the) north winds. Dawn Of Meggido had promise until they completely ripped the riff from for whom the bell tolls. And the rest is just ok with exception of The Usurper, Jewel Throne, Circle Of The Tyrants, and Necromantical Screams. I’d give it like a 6 overall while I would give albums like Into The Pandemonium and Monotheist like 8.5-10/10 scores. Also a huge Triptykon fan as well.

It's repetitive and boring but that's just me. Megadeth: Dystopia: Not a bad album and Kiko is a great edition but I never really took to this album. Their most recent album that just came out is a major step up imo. Sepultura Roots: While an album with mixed opinions, its still quite popular and I've never really been a fan of this record. I don't even hate Nu Metal but I just felt this album in a lot of ways is a step down from their previous records. Iron Maiden Seventh Son of a Seventh Son: Again not a terrible album and its actually pretty damn good but I don't find this album to be as memorable as previous or later albums even. Still a pretty awesome album just not one I rate super high.

I’m a little surprised about Countdown. The first half of it is pretty simplistic radio metal songs but This Was My Life, the title track, Captive Honour and Ashes In Your Mouth are all amazing and somewhat progressive songs to me. High Speed Dirt and Psychotron are a little more on the simple side but also very enjoyable, and of course Architecture Of Aggression is fantastic and not one of the more simplistic radio songs. However, that take on Cryptic Writings is pretty much how I feel about it. Aside from Sin, I think it’s a great album from start to finish. I still think Countdown is a great album, but that's when I discovered the band, so it doesn't surprise me. I would say Youthanasia is equally good, though I understand why some don't care for it. Good to hear love for Cryptic Writings, though. Solid album that I think might be considered underrated in the more hardcore metal community, but obviously as you said, it got plenty of accolades at the time. My biggest issue with the album is the production. After how thick and heavy Youthanasia sounded, Cryptic Writings sounds a bit limp wristed by comparison. It just doesn't hit me as hard. That said, you're absolutely right about "Mastermind" and "Disintegrators" in terms of banger tracks. I would also say the final 3 tracks on the album smoke quite a bit as well. The thing that Countdown has going for it more than anything is songwriting. I know lots of people love SFSGSW as an album, but for me it's kind of weak. Not only was Dave in the throes of addiction and bringing on new hired guns, but the songwriting just isn't there. Peace Sells was a massive step up from a promising, but (to me) slightly disappointing debut. So when SFSGSW came out, I felt like it was a step down. Rust In Piece was so good that I don't think it would have made sense to try and repeat that sound, so it was smart for them to diverge.

I think one thing that you need to acknowledge about Catch 33 before going into it is that it’s definitely not like other albums, it plays out like one massive song, which was an idea experimented with by the EP I. I’d say that it’s more like an experience, and adventure, where there are intense moments of action cut apart by ambience and tensity that builds up to those moments. If you’re a sucker for experimental music, then Catch 33 will leave you stunned, but if you’re someone to like to mosh out and all the likes, then it’s gonna be boring. That’s why it’s so divisive, it’s something that was never planned or prepared for by its fans, it just popped out of the blue.

I could’ve also said Fear Inoculum as well as I don’t care for that one either. Ghost: Prequelle - I see a lot of rankings and publications put this as the #1 Ghost album and I just don’t get it. If anything, it’s my least favorite record from the band. Not bad, but not great either. Scorpions: Crazy World - This album is mainly big because of the two ballads: “Wind of Change” and “Send Me an Angel”. Of the two, I like the latter. But as for the album as a whole, I don’t really care for it all that much apart from a song here and there. Europe: The Final Countdown - I like only half of this album… and the majority of the songs that I like on this album are the big singles. Kreator: Pleasure to Kill - I know this is gonna piss off some old school thrash fans, but I’m just not the biggest fan of this album. It’s not a bad album at all, I just prefer their material from the 2000s onwards a little more. As for the older Kreator stuff, I do dig Extreme Aggression and Coma of Souls a lot though.

I dont know PLEAURE TO KILL very well. I do like playing ENDLESS PAIN as a comparison to Slayer's HELL AWAITS. Over reliance on reverb, but a fun energetic early entry in the thrash greats. By teenagers no less.

Love just about everything Enslaved have released, and you're right that Mardraum is quite underrated. But if anything, I'd say every one of their albums is underrated. If I had to pick, I can kind of agree with Below the Lights being a little overrated compared to most of their other albums, but not as overrated as Isa is.

Korn’s Follow The Leader is my pick for the most overrated metal album. I have no idea how this is considered their magnum opus. It’s not even in my top 5 in their discography. It’s the most late 90’s nü metal imaginable, and parts of it have aged horribly. There are great songs like Freak on a Leash and Got The Life, but the lows are absurdly low. All in the Family and Children of the Korn are often considered the two worst Korn songs (even the band hates those songs now), and for some it’s not even close. Overall, it doesn’t have that same dark feel that the first and next two had, it sounds more commercial and radio-friendly and it loses some of that edge. It’s not a bad album, but in my opinion it’s a 7.5/10 at most.

Honestly the only take I'd disagree with is the recommendation of Chevelle. I've seen them live about 3 times and while they're fun, I find them extremely boring compared to Meteora. I'm not even a big LP fan but I do find that album leagues more interesting than that whole band.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised on some of these picks, but in a good way. 40 Below Summer, wow 😲 that's a great pick. I absolutely love that album to this day. I'm also surprised at Gojira - Fortitude. I would have thought you would have gone back in their discography. My pick would be L' Enfant Sauvage. But, I do love Fortitude. As far as Megadeth goes, Countdown to Extinction is most definitely overrated. Way too commercial. They were just trying to fit in the times rather than kicking you in the face like "Rust in Peace", which is a way stronger album along with " Cryptic Writings".
@MetalTrenches2 жыл бұрын
The only reason I didn't go back with Gojira is because I feel like all of those other albums get plenty of hype already.

Catch 33 is awesome! but I can definitely understand why it is disliked. You definitely have to be in the mood for it. It's repetitiveness is what makes it dominate your thoughts. As far as the drum machine.... I can't tell the difference because I guess I don't have an ear for drum sounds.

@thedogfromraditude54492 жыл бұрын
I agree that the deep cuts on Meteora are better than the hits. I really don’t care for Somewhere I Belong, there’s a good riff at the end but that’s about it. Numb has great lyrics and some fun riffs, but it’s a B Tier song overall. Meanwhile, Figure.09 is my favorite Linkin Park song and one of the best nü metal songs of all time in my opinion, but almost no one ever talks about it. Countdown To Extinction is pretty much the opposite to me. I like Black Album better because it’s more consistent and only has a few bad songs, while Countdown To Extinction is mostly just a singles album. But I agree on Youthanasia, it’s such an underrated album and should be considered one of Megadeth’s best.

On this one I’m gonna say “The Downward Spiral”. Every piece of this album may be intentionally designed, but it ends up being not fun to listen to. I feel like the loud moments are gonna blow out my headphones, the quiet moments are so quiet I can barely hear Trent Reznor, and all of it makes the lyrics unintelligible. I would much rather listen to With Teeth.

I agree with this. I just finished running through all NIN's discography and TDS was pretty underwhelming despite how much praise it got. I'd actually say their more modern releases, like Bad Witch and Not the Actual Events, are better at delivering that heavy industrial sound that I wish TDS had.

I always thought Countdown to Extintion was just a good album with some hit songs that made it the most popular Megadeth record. Of course Symphony of Destruction, Sweating Bullets, Ashes in Your Mouth and the title track are classics, but the other songs are just ok or kinda forgettable to be honest; a lot of riffs and verses and choruses are generic and bland and melodically there's nothing special. So yeah as a whole it's a good and enjoyable album but nothing that outstanding.
