The arguments you have for Far Beyond Driven can be used for Vulgar Display of Power by other listeners. As I already said in another video, FBD is much more diverse and refreshing than the whole late discography of Pantera. Stylistically different, each one will prefer one to the other. I prefer you say you don´t like it, because saying it is overrated means it is not so good. For me and obviously many others, it´s just a very solid album (let´s put "good friends and a bottle of pills" apart).

Okay, subbed after this video. First two CDs that I ever bought were Iron Maiden's "Powerslave" and "Piece Of Mind". Even as I had just got into them via the VHS "Live After Death", I knew "Powerslave" was the better. I think the first half of "Piece Of Mind" is great, especially the opener "Where Eagles Dare" and "Revelations", the second half is mostly meh versus "Powerslave", which got my Love into metal because she loved the poem "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", and I loaned her the disc... later, her 1st concert was Maiden while 8.5 months pregnant!

I have Slaughtered, Five Minutes Alone, Becoming, I'm Broken, and Strength Beyond Strength stuck in my head. Other metal bands have S tier albums with like 3 great songs on them (Reign in Blood for example), while Far Beyond Driven has 5 great tracks on it. Vulgar Display of Power overshadows it a little bit. It's really hard to release something great after releasing an all-time great album. Look at Megadeth, Metallica, and a couple of others after they release their huge albums everyone hears about. And yes Good Friends and A Bottle of Pills is probably the worst song post-glam era.

I used to rate Whitechapel's the Valley as one of their best but looking back their first 4 albums are their best and hold up much better. Slaughter to Prevail's Kostolom got so much hype when the Chapters of Misery EP and Misery Sermon had much more memorable songwriting. I agree that Far Beyond Driven while still good has some filler tracks and Cowboys from Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and the Great Southern Trendkill are better. I agree with you on Burzum, and Filosofem is the only great Burzum album. British Steel and Piece of Mind had great singles and some deep cuts are good but there's lots of filler. Hard disagree on Peace Sells, Far Beyond Driven, and The Blackening, though with the former I'm down with anyone who prefers Rust. Honestly though? I'd actually probably put Vulgar Display of Power as the most overrated Pantera album. The mix is just so thin that the clicky drums start to annoy me after a while, and honestly if I never hear Walk again in my lifetime I'd be happy. Easily the most overplayed song in their catalog. Actually kinda feel similarly towards Ashes of the Wake for similar reasons. Definitely agree with you on British Steel and Piece of Mind though. Strong singles, meh everything else, easily overshadowed by bigger and better albums that came pretty soon after.

And Peace Sells is honestly a bit overlooked. My Last Words, Conjuring and Bad Omen are all phenomenal tracks/deeper cuts

These are all good albums, but even though I've listened to them all countless times, I can't remember anything about them besides a song or two: The Ocean - Phanerozoic I (I prefer the sequel) Cradle of Filth - Hammer of the Witches (I prefer Cryptoriana and Existence is Futile) The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath (I prefer Octahedron) Yes - Fragile (the 3 long tracks and Long Distance Runaround are solid, the rest are kind of duds though; compared to Relayer and Close to the Edge where there aren’t any weak parts. Still a top 5 Yes album)
@Krauser12262 жыл бұрын
I don't feel like the "I prefer Kin to The Valley" is that outlandish. Hell, I prefer Kin to The Valley myself. While The Valley was definitely more surprising, it was only that way given it's context of the prior Whitechapel records. Kin is, at least in my opinion, a much better overall record and, had Kin come out first and The Valley second, I feel like people would feel less enthusiastic about The Valley overall. Again, I love both records, but Kin is the better record to me musically and as a whole composition.

Weird to me that you'd include Soilwork at all because that band needs all the praise they can get just to increase their exposure. Soilwork should've gotten a lot bigger than they did. Yeah ... I can agree with some of these. British Steel - Martin Popoff has called this basically just a heavy Kiss album, and he's ... not wrong. In America in 1980, this must have seemed HEAVY, but people who were already into Priest must have been disappointed, and someone younger like me who grew up hearing old Metallica and Megadeth, it's cool, but not particularly mind-blowing. Speaking of Megadeth, yeah - the last three songs on Peace Sells do nothing for me, and thrash bands should never cover old blues songs, period. Piece of Mind is good from start to finish. I'm an 80's kid and Powerslave wasn't that good. The song Powerslave is awful. Right after is 2 Minutes to Midnight. The Dualists and Ancient Mariner are the only good songs on the album. The deeper cuts on Piece of Mind are good. Where Eagles Dare is a good song. Same for Still Life, Sun and Steel, and even Revelations. The instrumental is also good. The song, Flight of Icarus, seals that album as their best overall album. Back then, you didn't have free music other than the radio. This forced you to listen to albums over and over and some grew on you and some didn't. Piece of Mind didn't need any help, I gave Powerslave many chances and it's was their worst album at that time. The songs are goofy. The artwork was the best at the time until, imo, the next album. And many must have agreed because Somewhere in Time is an amazing album and the band wagon fans completely jumped ship as glam metal was in full swing even though the artwork was possibly the best album artwork ever. A band as popular as Maiden didn't lose fans in 1 album, it's always 2 and the 2 are Powerslave and Somewhere in Time...

It just doesn't suit them for my ears. The only track where it worked was wolves. I still love the band but I just miss that early style.

Peace Sells is overrated, I can agree with that. It has some classics but honestly Devil's Island, I Ain't Superstitious, and Bad Omen all just seem like filler songs.

Late to this. Been trying to catch up on some of your videos, particular these "overrated metal albums" ones. Was surprised to hear your thoughts on The Valley. Honestly, I'm that weirdo that thinks that Whitechapel's last two albums are some of their best work to date. More so than the earlier stuff. Might need to check out your tier list on Whitechapel since you mentioned some of their new stuff sounding a bit like butt rock at times, which I highly disagree with. On a different note, I still don't understand why people listen to, let alone, support Burzum's music. I mean... considering the fact that Varg is a convicted murderer and all that. Plus, the fact that he used to be a Nazi.
@zachdproductions1232 жыл бұрын
I personally would’ve put Painkiller by Judas Priest on here, but at the same time I couldn’t argue if someone had British Steel here. For Iron Maiden, I would have had Number of The Beast on here instead of Piece of Mind, but again, overrated I can understand calling it. Far Beyond Driven I definitely agree on. I also would have thrown End of Heartache by Killswitch Engage on the list. Interesting choices.

I also don't like Hvet tar oss (or however you spell it) by Burzum. IMHO, Varg is the lowest tier vocalist of all the early 1990's black metal inner circle. His screeches are... pretty annoying, if you ask me, and putting them right up front in the mix in Hvett DEFINITELY kills any enjoyment of the album for me. I like Filosofem WAAYYY better 'cause Varg's voice is buried (and I always consider him a master at simple yet ridiculously catchy keyboard melodies).
@Dexusaz2 жыл бұрын
I love Varg's vocals but of course, it's a matter of taste. Hvis Lysset Tar Oss has the best variety in Burzum's discography and Tomhet is his best Ambient Track. Love the Keyboard parts within the Metal songs as well.

Powesrslave is rated properly. It's probably the only perfect Iron Maiden album. The fact Iron Maiden can perform Rime of the Ancient Mariner live which is 13 minutes and has no chorus is insane. Powerslave is also an insane title track, Aces High is amazing, and while not as crazy, Two Minutes to Midnight is a catchy radio rock hit. This is one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums and this is coming from someone that is a fan, but is heavily critical of Iron Maiden for not being heavy enough.

I would honestly argue that Piece of Mind is Iron Maiden's most UNDERrated album, because it's always getting overshadowed by the likes of Number of the Beast and Powerslave. Aside from solid tracks like Where Eagles Dare, Revelations, Flight of Icarus, Die with Your Boots On, and Still Life, To Tame a Land is one of the best songs they've ever written, period.

I disagree with Far Beyond Driven (and I would've personally chosen CFH as an alternative, since in my opinion VDP is overrated). Also, I kinda do agree with Peace Sells being on the list, but I don't have a problem with Dave's vocals. But its better than the super overrated Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood (that would be at the top of my personal overrated albums list.)

I can't agree with The Bleeding being overrated. Its probably one of the best cannibal corpse albums that you can listen to the entire way thru with no skippables. This Also started to define their sound as a band, way less thrashy and slayeresque with all the hammer ons , pull offs and harmonic squeals. I'd go as far as to say Tomb is the most overrated album by CC, yes it was defining for its time but it was a really boring album for the most part.

More overrated metal albums: - Machine Head: Burn My Eyes - There are some decent bangers on this one like "Old" and "Block", but a lot of it doesn't do too much for me. I like 'Through the Ashes of Empire', 'The Blackening', and 'Unto the Locust' the most when it comes to Machine Head. SPICY TAKE: I'd also put 'The Burning Red' over 'Burn My Eyes'. - Ozzy Osbourne: No More Tears - The first 5 songs are killer, the 2nd half is hit or miss. It's also his 2nd best selling album right behind Blizzard of Ozz and most lists (Loudwire in particular) puts it as the 3rd best album of his catalogue and quite frankly, I don't see it. His best stuff (regarding only his solo material) is in the 80s, and hell I even prefer 'Ozzmosis' over this album. - Queensrÿche: Empire - The best songs from this album are the singles/hits ("Jet City Woman", "Silent Lucidity", "Another Rainy Night (Without You)", "Empire", "Anybody Listening?"), everything else is filler. 'Rage for Order', 'Operation: Mindcrime', the self-titled EP, and 'Promised Land' are the records that I enjoy the most from that band. - Lamb of God: Sacrament - It's not as strong as most people say it is. I like the first 7 tracks off this album, but it ends off on a weak note with the last few tracks unfortunately. 'As the Palaces Burn', 'Ashes of the Wake', 'VII: Strum Und Drang' and 'New American Gospel' are better albums when it comes to Lamb of God's discography.
@MetalTrenches2 жыл бұрын
YES honestly Sacrament is one of my least favorite LOG albums
@metalmelodies67182 жыл бұрын
@@MetalTrenches I wish LOG or Megadeth still had Chris Adler, it still pisses me off tbh, he left Megadeth because of loyalty to LOG just to get booted shortly after! Art Cruz is good, but he's not hard on the bands creative writing process like Chris was, he's the new guy, so he doesn't have as much say! Dirk is good as well, but I prefer Adler! "Sacrament" is slightly overrated, but the only LOG album I don't like is "Resolution" 💤💤💤 "Ashes of the Wake" is a masterpiece

Agree on Sacrament HARD. I think Wrath is a better record overall and I prefer Resolution to Sacrament too. I honestly don't even like Pantera much after Vulgar Display, they peaked there IMO and lost a lot of what made them good thereafter. I also think Machinehead has always been a cut below a lot of their contemporaries. Robb's lyrics and vocals definitely bring it down, even with the Blackening being their best album.
@rembrandtdavinci64102 жыл бұрын
They didn't peak with Vulgar, they actually devolved. Luckily they picked up the pace with Far Beyond Driven which is the most extreme sounding heavy metal album without going full on death metal.
