So a large part of the reason the PS2 was so dominating in the early years was due to the fact it doubled as a DVD player, most of which were, at minimum, $100 in the early 2000’s (most good ones were probably double that) and it had a large influx of third party games to keep people engaged. It even got supported into 2008 with some entries like DBZ: Infinite World, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and a port of Sonic Unleashed. If the PS2 is ever overtaken I would be absolutely amazed.

I think also the reason they still sold well towards the end of the 2000s was that they suddenly became more affordable for the developing world (Brazil, India, Africa) which was a huge market, even if NA/JPN/EUR had moved on to PS3/360.

there was a FIFA 2012 for ps2. it was a lot like my FIFA 08 but i wasnt too disappointed. got decent playtime out of it at the time. didnt know about infinite world, gonna look it up, thanks

There also wasn’t much competition for it. Sega had left the console market, Nintendo GC was a commercial flop, and Microsoft was late to the game and was a new player.

It was a commercial failure even by Nintendo’s own sales expectations, they literally had to halt production on it because they weren’t selling fast enough and their stock built up too much. I’m not sure by which metric you’re saying it’s not a flop, but the sales suggest it was, and critics rank its competitors products much higher.
