Nice vids, I used to learn from a good friend who has since passed on, he taught me some JKD principles and, well to be honest in a short time kind of threw a lot of things at me, but wasn't always clear about exactly what styles came from what or where. He kind of stressed escrima( I really only learn the six count, but he said if done correctly all the others would be, well, kind of needless??) and wing chun( basic things he said were suited to my abilities at the time and my physical abilities), some kali, but, I really didn't realize what they were until watching many of the excellent videos on youtube from some pretty amazing instructors, such as GM Baldissone, some great panantukan vids on his channel. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with others, it wasn't until many years later I realized how much he was able to teach me in such a short time, I try to practice as I can, but have a hrad time finding anyone to practice with. I feel fortuante to have had a friend like Johnny, he studied a bit at some seminars with Dan Inosanto, Richard Bustillo, Cass Magda and Fred Degerberg. He got into many styles, juijutzu, vovinam, ecrima( I think he had one more level to go to get his guro ranking, but his teacher Luo Nugien had left the state suddenly.. also aikido, eagle claw, and he received a brown belt in hapkido..I wish I knew exactly the terms for the things he taught me, but I guess it's not important, in the long run it gave more confidence in basic self -defense, and gave me something to do when I need to release some inner tension. Again thank you for sharing. Be well:)

It all means the same thing but if you want to be technical those names represented Kali during different times, regions, and the specialization. Before the 16th century, the Philippine martial art was originally called Kali, then Escrima/Eskrima, then finally Arnes/Arnis. Today, the art is more commonly called Arnis in Luzon, Eskrima in the Visayas, and Kali in Mindanao. Another thing that makes it more confusing is that most Filipinos refer to Arnis as the system that specializes in sticks (since most styles that specialize in stick fighting have Arnis in their names like Modern Arnis, LS Arnis, Abanico Tres Puntas, etc.), for sword/knife - Kali (because of Kali Illustrismo, Atienza Kali, Sayoc Kali, etc.), for empty-hand - Eskrima (because of numerous family systems that have Eskrima in their names but there exceptions). Bottomline, don't get caught in the confusion and just call it FMA 😂

Im new to this but it makes sense. I have done some TKD and Iij BELIEVE he offers Arnies escrima kick boxing and he is 8th degree blk belt with proof from authentic Korean 10 dan grand master or higher. Also some Aikido...all in his system created by him. I had took defend myself in Mexico as a yellow belt 2 stripes preparing for my green belt. Control confidence are taught but it changes everything when in a foreign country and a group wants to jump you kill you rob you ......who knows. Bottom line said a prayer under my breath and was very nervous when intervention arrived....I asked myself was I ready the guys who interviewed said they knew I was ready...

To my mind there are a few factors. 1. They need to challenge you. This is not limited to a more knowledgeable student but even new students can be challenging. When we perform drills we try to not stop and "reset" but keep going, since you can't reset irl. Due to this dynamic a student making mistakes can add to the challenge. 2. a partner who is not adverse to being given corrections regardless of perceived rank. Even experienced practitioners can make mistakes and anyone with some knowledge can notice them. 3. a partner that isn't afraid to correct you. 4. no ego. I think most problems start with ego. As an example the partner who insists on going light speed with Hubud or Sinawali before their partner is ready, with criticize everything, even if it's a preference thing but criticize them... oh boy lol.

There are actually combinations of good people to spar. But the combinations wouldn't mix in one person. The best sparring partner is someone that is open to doing anything. They aren't like; fuck kung fu, capoeira, Kali or whatever, that shit doesn't work. I like when I spar someone that doesn't mind going full contact. If I go into a class, I look at the other students, to see who I would like to spar. And I will usually pick the person that is the most intimidating to me. The one where if they started a fight, I would be on my toes. I will try and get to spar with them. Because I try to get a sparring partner that would be the closest to how I would feel in a real fight. Although I will do it, I don't really like to spar kids or women. There are women that could kick my ass, but I only like to spar them if they have a lot of technique I can learn from. And there were one too many times I hit a woman in the boobs, because I am not thinking that I am sparring a woman. Than I see a grimace on their face, and realize; Oh yea, that probably really hurts.. But I wouldn't mind doing some of that sparring that is seen in videos in other countries. Like the wing chun VS Karate sparring. Because it is as close to a real fight as possible. They are really hitting each other. They have referees, but it is less controlled than an MMA match.

I believe that for the martial arts it is essential to have good training partners. I feel that good training partners should be for one open minded and two humble, for three willing and ready to receive instruction at all times, and should poses the ability or at very least the gameness to make training more realistic by drilling, then live drilling and sparring. Additionally, i feel that a good training & sparring partner will have feedback to offer "every time" weather it be positive or constructive. I dont think at any one point as a training partner that one should inject any sort of negativity for we are all in the arts to learn and also all have our own strengths and weaknesses. I think that a good sparring partner should know how to read his buddy or partners intensity level and he or she should be able to skillfully match that ability, speed, and style without over doing it and training at a 75% when the partner is gradually training at a 25% mark. With that being said a good training partner needs to establish their specific form of communication as far as how they will train together, especially if the two are strangers.

Best training partners are the ones who, when spars, attacks correctly with no doubt or fear that he might hurt me. Most people tends to punch slightly sideways instead of punching straight. This will not improve the partners' blocking technique, hell, it might even leads to developing bad blocking habbit. honestly, if whats the point of learning martial arts if you are afraid of getting hurt? Dont burn me pls
