Most Underrated Prog Albums

What are the most underrated Prog albums ever? A big part of me thinks that every Prog album is underrated but that's a whole different episode.

Great list Scott! - My pals, Enchant, who are my favorite band. Yea I'd agree that J9oD10 is probably their most underrated album. - Echolyn - Think Id go with S/T or StB as I think AtW is lauded by the prog community as their best and rightfully so (Crazy saw Echolyn in 1993 at a frat party at Virginia Tech for the 1st time of many times seeing them live) - Good pick on Frost* - And I agree on the It Bites and A.C.T choices as they are my favorites too. Once Around the World by IB and Last Epic by A.C.T are the usual favorites amongst the band fan base. And cool picks by Davey. - Met the Shadow Gallery guys at Progscape 94 show and they gave me a free tape Magna Carta sampler tape with Dance of the Fools on it. Loved SG since. - Iluvatar is my hometown band who I've seen a boatload of times. They are still playing too. Saw them for their Children anniversary show in late 2022 and they're playing again late June in Havre de Grace, MD. Thanks Scot for the great show too! You can always go the opposite way for entertainment on most overrated prog albums. Always good views. I'd be the sh-t stirrer and mention In the Court of the Crimson King, Dark Side of the Moon, Thick as a Brick, ELP S/T, 2112, and your favorite Tales. Like all of those albums in varying degrees but I think they are all overrated amongst the progworld. And all Magma sucks😂

Tangerine Dream’s Zeit is pretty underrated especially for how groundbreaking it was for its time

@@paulayers1111 - I would agree, but I feel that Le Parc is overlooked more often than Zeit. Just my perception. Your results may vary. 😎

I agree. People complain that it sounds very ZTT. Steve Wilson was talking about it recently. There is a video on KZbin. People complain it sounds very 1985. Strange that 70s prog sounds 1970s.

More on the New age genre but I throw in Shadofax , shadow dance is an amazing prog album to my ears. I am also going to throw my hat in from Norway MagicPie. I would to throw Styx, Queen and Sweet's vocals, Yes Relayer era in a blender and MagicPie pops out. One of the most frightening instrumental music listening experience is The album by Universe Zero called Heresy. Totally worth a listen.

Fun episode today, Scot, and an excellent topic. As always, there were several bands or albums mentioned that I’m unfamiliar with but would certainly love to explore, Curved Air being one of them. Their name is already intriguing enough. And Davey brought up a cool sounding one with Shadow Gallery, another catchy name. He also mentioned that he’ll be covering BOC upcoming. That’d be entertaining ! But one of the albums I tend to think is a bit underrated is Eloy’s ‘ Ocean. ‘ What a captivating voyage with an ominous ambience and nifty drumming that occasionally sounds like the Professor. Interestingly, Ocean was released the same year as Farewell to Kings. Love to get your take on Eloy.

Haven’t watched yet but I am sure that Obscured By Clouds will get at least one mention! I would put Trespass in there too. It rarely gets the love it deserves because of what came after but I think it is great all on its own.

Good program, but you went a little overtime, methinks. I remember D.I.Y. got plenty of airplay. I vote for Nektar; Recycled, Remember the Future, A Tab in the Ocean, and especially Journey to the Centre of the Eye. Man, I used to hang out with computer scientists and electrical engineers and I thought THEY were nerds. Be proud!

@@mythoflogic I’m a massive Spocks fan. That album has so much going on in it. Masterpiece of modern prog it certainly is. All of the band were at the top of their game at this point. Such a diverse set of songs. And even if you can’t really follow the concept or idea of Snows character it doesn’t really matter cos the songs stand up alone on themselves I think 👍

Young Mr. Brockway showing his age again. 19 out of 20 Rush fans would rather eat lint than listen to Power Windows. I agree wholeheartedly with Cody. For me it is the only "perfect" Rush album. 8 songs that never flag. He's right about the bass parts also and Lifeson shines throughout. It is second only to Permanent Waves in my book but that album contains the dismal Different Strings so is not 10/10. Must now listen to The Ladder which I have somehow missed.

HEY YOU GUYS have you heard of ... KENSO (Prog-Fusion).... from JAPAN. Was given the perfect compilation CD of ProgFest after a YES concert in 2000 with 2 of their tracks & been a fan ever since. Check their "SPARTA' 89 album (KZbin). It's PURE uplifting instrumental by virtuoso amazing Japanese guys ( playing YES/PFM/HTM/Bruford style) HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
