It sucks to be a child with an immature parent who is argumentative rather than a care taker. It's exhausting to know that you don't have the security of a parental figure, because they rather be right and argue with you than simply listen and understand. I know they don't have the tools to see beyond what they know and lack emotional intelligence, but it still doesn't make it right. As someone who has struggled with a dad who never takes accountability and uses his children to argue and sees them as a problem, I 100% feel for her and where she is emotionally. The see you as "too emotional" when in reality is you simply needing parental support and someone to comfort you.

As soon as she said "you're too sensitive" I lost it! This was the relationship I had with my mother and she used to say this shit to me all the time! No! We are not too sensitive it's that we constantly bring the same shit up over and over because you as parents can never take a moment to reflect on your actions and account and apologize for the trauma and pain you put us through! It's not about sensitivity it's about accountability, without that accountability we have a harder time letting go and moving forward. It really is simple parents if you say or do something shitty to your kids acknowledge it and own up to the mistakes you have made and work to change it so the relationship can grow and flourish. Instead of raising us as broken people learn to fix yourself and your own generational trauma before you destroy us completely because that is how we are left broken and alone trying to put a million pieces of our traumatized selves back together. If you cannot do that then don't get mad at us when we leave and don't show you the respect you seek. I don't care what type of authority figure you are parent, teacher, etc. Respect is earned not given, you cannot expect respect from somebody (in this case her daughter) if you (the parent) don't give it in return. We are human beings first and labelled child second. In my case I left my parent home 10 years ago because I could no longer take the abuse from my mother and her refusal to acknowledge not only the pain she put me through but her own pain as well. I am certain had I not left I would not be here right now, I tried to end my life because of this crap. No person, man, woman, or child should ever be made to feel like they are not worth living or loving (that's how my mom made me feel). Although I have come a long way (with therapy etc.) I still have moments of struggle and I am very much still a work-in progress despite 8 years of therapy. People don't realize how detrimental this is for us as kids this type of abuse and trauma shapes things for us later on in life, things are much harder for us later because of it. Yes the physical abuse hurts but the mental is so much worse, and is the hardest to work through and get over. That shit sticks to us like a virus that won't quit and we carry the aftermath of that chaos for the rest of our lives despite coping mechanisms. Words matter, words mean something so please choose them wisely especially when speaking to your children because sometimes if you go far enough those words hurt beyond repair. I hope this young lady leaves if she has to and finds peace in life, I hope mom also comes to terms with herself, looks within, and gets the help that she needs so that she too can be at peace as a person with or without her daughter.

It’s sad but hurt people hurt people, and being a mom is just a title.

I could be wrong, but I believe the mother is stuck in her ways because she's stuck in her trauma and she doesn't have the tools to get unstuck from her trauma. Everything that has transpired between them, both mother and daughter, is a trauma response to what they both experienced. I feel so bad for the daughter because i believe she loves her mother and has clearly been traumatized by her mother's trauma, and she feels helpless. It's as if she has survivors guilt, but whenever she tries to communicate her feelings to her mother, she gets shutdown so she just completely shuts down. My prayers go out to her and her daughter and i hope they both are able to get the help they need. ❤❤❤

My favorite thing I heard from a therapist is “Every behavior is a need trying to be met.” This mom has clearly been through a lot a trauma and looks to me like she takes any opposition to her as a threat, and something in her feels like she needs to protect herself, even if it means getting violent with her child. She needs some serious therapy and healing so she too can feel safe and secure, because she’s clearly unable to provide a safe environment for herself or her child.

I know that feeling all to well and I know that I will never get it. So I nurture the Lil girl in me with music to calm her soul. I also talk to her and say that what you felt then were valid feelings and that it's okay to feel hurt, to feel angry, to feel sad. Whatever it is that you're feeling, it's okay and she will be okay too. When I do this for my inner child, it helps me to move on even knowing that the little girl in me will never get the reassurance from my mom. It's okay, I'm okay, and my inner child is okay too. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

This is a sad reality for a lot of black girls/women including me. My mom is around the same age as her mom and she acts the same way. It’s really sad and incredible how alot of women from that decade share the same characteristics. They never see any wrong in the things they do, it’s despicable. I’ve seen a couple of episodes on her where the mother is the same as this one and the child is the one seeking hello/therapy from Karamo. I pray for the daughter because Lord knows it’s hell dealing with a mom like that, especially when she doesn’t take accountability or apologize. And make you seem like you’re over reacting and sensitive💔😩

1. I completely understand that the mom may be emotionally stuck at 17 still however you're no longer 17 you're an adult now. You are old enough and competent enough to know when you need to get therapy for your trauma not pass it onto your child the behavior exhibited today was extremely narcissistic 2. I'm SO so sorry to the daughter; as an oldest daughter and first child I completely understand what you're going through I truly hope that you get through this love and get the healing and help that you need to heal from all that traumatic stuff

She is my mom and should know and understand it's NOT OK to be treated or spoken to like that and to save the BOTH of us, I rather lay down my boundaries and be happy and healed without her relationship bc that will ALWAYS be my mom.. But I have enough women who pour into me that I no longer feel I'm missing anything. I've already mourned the relationship that will never be..
