I vaguely remember seeing Motherwell thrash Rangers around this time. This is probably the one. I loved Ally McCoist so this hurt me a lot but I understand little about the inequality of resources in football as a 9 year old so now I miss these old times.

The reference to goal difference is because the result (Motherwell winning 3-0) meant that Aberdeen went top of the league with one game to go (Rangers v Aberdeen), and only needed a draw to win the title. Rangers would still have been top if they had lost by a smaller margin, so their tactics at the end of the game v Motherwell were bizarre. As it happened, Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-0 on the final day and won the league anyway. But if they had lost the league because they had wrongly chased goals and left themselves open to the counter attack, I don't think we would have heard much more of Walter Smith as a manager.

No difference losing by 1 or 2 in the circumstances, so the tactics of all out attack were to be expected. After the 2nd though it looks clear some of the Rangers players heads had gone, I doubt that was a tactical thing.
