This is exactly where I am. Im an art student and doing creative work at home, by myself, has basically enabled me to drown on my own expectations. It's sad because art is what I've always wanted to do, but after having art block for so long I'm starting to doubt myself. This video has wonderful insight, plus it's just so comforting to hear this from other people creating too. Thank you.

Thank you - needed to hear this - I am 55 and have procrastinated all my life regarding my art and am only just prioritising it - I am also guilty of comparing my work to yours and it was not a good feeling! You are so lovely, well done you have prioritised your art so early - Such incredibly wise words - thank you x

I do not want to be an artist that is so realistic because that is for people like yourself. Not everyone wants to or has the gift of extreme precision. Realism is extremely rare but so is a high level of originality. They are both needed in art. It is not good to compare yourself to others. There are so many gifted people who blow me away in many ways. I believe that cleaning my house is a big issue in terms of being mentally healthy and happy along with eating a healthy diet. Thank you for sharing your incredible technical skills..they are rare.

Thanks for this ☺️ I always struggled with art block & consistency my whole life. I take year breaks at a time sometimes. Making art takes a lot of energy and I can burn out so quick and literally pass out after working. I’m training to become a tattoo artist & my mentor wants me to fill out this giant sketchook in only 2 weeks. It’s already really late and not close to being done but I’m not letting it bother me. Walking away, taking a few days off from drawing, going out, doing errands, de-cluttering my closets, and drawing something more simple help me feel better 😌

You are so right, Daria. It's hard to get started, and the pressure to make something perfect can stop you. But it's best to just get started and only focus on the art. Start looking at shapes and colors and forget about everything else. You are a great artist. Thanks for sharing your process with us.

You opening statements have been precisely the problem of perfectionism that perpetuated my procrastination with the creative tasks I MOST care about. I wanted to keep up a daily practice of drawing, but the longer it had been since my last "completed" work of art, the more I avoided the anxiety of starting a new piece. Finally I figured out my OCD, and I started just picking up whatever cardboard was in my recycling each morning and drawing a few 5 minute sketches and a 15 minute sketch. The insides of my cereal boxes, pizza box lids, the cardboard dividers in deliveries of my cat's canned food... I got a few sand hourglasses to turn over in front of me, because it helps me to know this first mark making of the day will NOT be an investment of more time than a few minutes, and it could be tossed back into the recycling bin after I've done my exercise. Then it's easier to move on to a more "high investment" piece, with paints, and someone expecting it by a certain deadline. Just starting is the only hard part for me. Once I get going it's meditate or driven work.

Thank YOU for your videos and what you do. I continue to buy anything and everything to get me going yet I still continue to procrastinate. I try not to believe it is fear because I have seen what I can do. Your ability to simplify the aft will help I am sure. Thanks again.

Lots of good advice. Lower emotions like doubt and self criticism or concern about other peoples thoughts always block inspiration in any field - it’s better to stop or change thoughts, meditate, shake away all those worries and find ways to have fun again. 💖

This is wonderful insight. When you spoke about our own high expectations standing in the way of us getting started on projects, that really resonated with me. That can be a problematic characteristic of perfectionism….nothing seems perfectly aligned so you never get started. I am definitely working on overcoming this way of thinking.❤️

Your video is right on the money and can be a problem for all ages. It is funny because when I push myself to start, I just let myself go and let my left hand be in control. I don't overthink anything and things turn out great. Then I wonder how I did that. It may sound crazy but I just trust that things will work out. Sometimes though, it is more hope rather than trust when trying something new.🙂 Another thing I use is to start a new painting to get back into the groove again.

Most modern portrait printers are realistic so they tend to blend. When blending a portrait do you have to complete a area before stopping or can you blend back over dry paint with the same results?

Great points of view👍 Should I do many types of art, in hopes that I will sell more or focus on the art that I'm really interested and love? Art is not a hobby it's a business and I wanna make money with it but doing art that I need to do instead of the art that I love to do is draining my creative energy.. I'm getting mixed opinions.. Focus on one niche or spread out in different ones?
@DariaCallie2 жыл бұрын
It’s a difficult question because it depends on each particular case; it’s not “one fits all” kind of thing. I would say - do both for now, this way you’ll still earn money, develop your skills in the desired art form and won’t get so burned out because you’re not only doing the work you have to do but switching to the one you love every now and then. Ideally, you should put yourself in the position where you could afford to transition fully into making the art you love after some time (be that 6 month or 6 years..) These are a few of my thoughts about it. I really hope it will all work out for you!
@Gfilipe0082 жыл бұрын
@@DariaCallie You're right, balance is key! I'll continue with digital art but also learning portraits.
