"I want people to stop saying 'that joke's offensive!'. I want them to start saying 'I FOUND it offensive', because you've got to own the emotion, because that.s all it is. You're just telling me how you feel about it." Can name a few billion people that need to hear this.

I have spent a lot of my professional and personal life in the “echo chamber” of organized religion. As much as I have loved the spiritual and therefore the questioning aspects of that life, I have constantly challenged the smug, self-satisfied certainties of religion and the danger of self-delusion that comes with it. Gervais’ closing remarks on people being offended are some of the best in the interview. If you are offended by anything you are “telling me your feelings.” He stopped short of where I would have and have gone. “I dont care about your feelings. I care about what you think.” Yes your feelings are painful but your thoughts are dangerous. They are harmful for you and potentially dangerous and harmful for others. I applaud this series of famous people sharing what they think and letting the social media world know that they are more than the memes created about them. The only society you ever want to live in is the one where you risk being offended and where your most cherished beliefs will be challenged.

Back in the times when monarchs had absolute power they also used to have some sort of entertainer at court who had the task to tell the truth to the monarch in a satirical way. So the monarch wouldn't end up in an echo chamber. Today we live in democracy and we're the sovereign. Each one of us. And we too need someone to tell us the truth, even if we don't like it. And that's why in most democratic countries comedians might inform the public better about what's going on than the news. Because it's their job. And people like Gervais do that brilliantly. We need those comedians, because we're the sovereign and if we don't have them something is wrong with democracy.

It’s very often the comedians who become quite profound orators, this is because they had already discovered a way of looking at life differently to others and spotting peoples idiosyncratic ways then articulating them in stand up routines. Even though they may often of come from very humble working class backgrounds and perhaps didn’t have the opportunity that the more privileged had, they still spotted those nuances, RG is one of those, along with the likes of Billy Connolly etc. RG has a close circle of very clever friends, people like Stephen Fry, Richard Dawkins, and the late Chris Hitchens, all of them wordsmiths, and he can match them all word for word, I love him, and I love his “don’t give a shit” attitude

I think he's important for comedy right now and he seems to have changed his stand up to make a statement about people being offended. He's always been 'edgy' but there does seem to be something about his comedy where he's testing the boundaries and pushing for a reaction more with newer material. Humour is subjective and also is being offended. I'm a white male and luckily in good health. For me to get offended by a joke that is different from my personal circumstances might be attacking my morals, but it's pretty arrogant of me to be offended for someone else and feel I represent a group of people
@monicadaniels7842 жыл бұрын
You are offended by people who get offended? That's when you know you have privilege! Punching down and hurting people is not funny, it's lazy comedy! His get out of jail free card is that he was once poor? "I'm one of the downtrodden, so I can make fun of you!" Bullcrap!

We so often see news articles about people offended by something Ricky Gervais said. If they gave 60-90 minutes of their time to watch (and get offended by) his routines, is it so difficult for them to give 8 minutes and 21 seconds of their day off (from being snowflakes) to watch this video? Ricky Gervais is *awesome.* A word thrown around so easily often as an over-exaggerated measure of how great something is, but in this case genuinely true. His depth of knowledge amazes me and he's the ONLY celebrity I'd love to one day sit across from and just listen to.
