What insurance do you need? This topic came to mind after my R6 was stolen. I wanted to talk about the different levels of insurance coverage and what things you should think about when deciding what coverage you need for your motorcycle. On my SV, I had basic liability. On my R6 and R1, I've had full coverage (comprehensive and collision). What do you need and how much will the insurance cost?

I'm 31, with no accidents, one speeding ticket, and I live in Los Angeles. Geico, Progressive, and State Farm all wanted over 8 thousand a year for full coverage on a 2013 CBR600RR. Then I hit up AAA they insured me for $421 a year full coverage! AAA rocks!!!!!!

Thanks! I want to be able to ride with my idol one day, hopefully one day it'll happen, i've always wanted to move over to the US, either Florida or Texas. Like, it's literally my dream to ride with you and all you other KZbinrs out in Texas :)
@motonosity
@motonosity 11 жыл бұрын
I have a theory for this. In countries other than the US, there are a lot more restrictions on engine size based on age and experience. The thought is that if you're buying a 1000cc bike, you've got a lot of time under your belt and are less likely to crash whereas someone on a 600 has less experience. This doesn't really apply in the US where you can get whatever bike you please right away (and thus costs go up so much more as you go up the cc scale).

I pay $150 a year for full coverage. But hey it's a 12 year old dirtbike, I've been riding for 9 years, and I'm 28. When I was 19 I bought a brand new R1. $970 a month! I said f that and got liability. Then it got stolen three months later. I was out $14000. Sad face.

I'm 16, my ninja 300 was like $750-760 for full coverage, and it's a brand new bike. A brand new r6, which I really wasn't looking at, was $4800 a year for full coverage. Really sucks being my age and having a motorcycle. No super sport fun for me, unless I get used. Lol

Good summary...I could complicate the discussion by mentioning fire & theft as an alternative to all perils (comprehensive) but let's pretend I didn't. I got injury coverage for disability, rehabilitation, loss of income, etc. because we have free health care that additional coverage was cheap for me...my driving record is clean...that helps!

I was looking into a few bikes and insuance was off the wall with numbers. Honda cbr 500r -320 a month honda cbr 250r- 125-190 depending on year (2013 2014) kawasaki ninja 300-87 all were full coverage for a 20yo male with 2 prior car accidents ( my fault) it forreal depends on the company and the place you live. I live in stl in the county and bike theft is semi rare. Im gojng with rhe ninja 300 as my first bike and in a few years ima go to a 500-650 then eventually go to a ninja 1400 ( dont remeber name) but I cant afford the insurance on a 500r atm xD

I am 19 years old, new rider, clean record (no accidents or tickets), under my mom's policy, State Farm, live in a small, safe town, policy is liability, under/uninsuranced and theft/flood damage (I believe its 50/50 or 100/100 not sure but I know its higher than the state minimum), used 2007 Yamaha YZF R6S (5,xxx miles), yearly payments.....and I am only paying $900 a year which comes out to be $75 a year....plus State Farm charges you assuming you will only ride 9 months (I live in PA so it snows) and that you will graduate from the MSF Motorcycle course....so I think I am paying a fairly low price but I wish it was cheaper annoying that me being a good driver is paying this much.....

I have a 2008 GSXR1000 I'm 29 and I pay about $50 a month for full coverage during the season. When my bike is in storage for the winter I just keep comprehensive and thats like $3 a month. I have been riding for about 4 years. I got hit by a guy that was uninsured and I had to claim my bike and it ended up being totaled. My insurance did go up about like $4 a month after that.

I'll keep the comp. I've had a car broken into when I just got my license and they took a screwdriver to my dash and the car wouldn't start. I only had liability and it was 1000 bucks to fix everything that was broken when you're 17 $1000 is a ton of money so ever since then I make sure to always have comp insurance.

I am surprised you didn't mention uninsured/underinsured coverage. The cost of replacing/fixing your bike is manageable (albeit painful) but if you are hit by an uninsured/underinsured motorist the hospital bill adds up fast and you are financially screwed. You can sue the other party but how much money do you think an uninsured/underinsured person has? I think this coverage is absolutely necessary especially if you live in ANY city.

I'm 28 through USAA progressive on an 09 R6 paying 109 a month for collision and comprehensive. But my deductible is 1000 bucks. The higher the deductible the lower the monthly. I have two speeding tickets on my record as well. Age does matter. Also the type of bike. Twins are less than inline 4's. "standard" or naked bikes will be significantly cheaper than a sport bike as well. for the best deals call and talk to an agent.

Thats crazy!!!! When Motonosity told me about them quoting him $4,000 for a year.. my head exploded. I cant imagine more than $2,000 being feasible for most people, unless they need to find a way to spend more money for no reason. 9 times out of 10, when they quote something that high, they just don't want to mess with it. If they DO insure it, they make sure they bank on it.
