Thanks for posting this, it is interesting to learn about the dark side of having a mobile device with you on a tour. As an older person with a complete lack of knowledge of all things "Tech" I've steered away from smart phones. I tend to use paper maps, "Stand alone GPS" for my navigation. It seems I have been right to have this approach all along!

Never ever plug into an unknown USB port. Carry your own charger and cable. It doesn't take up any room. Don't leave NFC on while not needing it. Don't leave wifi on if you don't need it. Make sure bluetooth pairing is set to require a code. Same as with a laptop. Don't connect to "FREE WIFI". Don't connect any usb devices you find to a computer either unless you fully know where it came from, IE you took it out of the package. This even goes for USB cables or mice or keyboards. As they can have chips in them that perform rubby ducky attacks that most USB blocking software won't prevent.

You can get data+power cables and just power cables to charge. Just use a powerbank, it's the easiest option. Most have a charge socket (micro USB/USB-C) and the normal USB so just plug the powerbank into the wall and the phone into the powerbank. Although, I have to say, I've not heard of many reports about peoples phones being hacked from a USB wall socket. Next you'll get us checking the mirrors in hotel rooms for being two way....
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
If people don't know that hacking can happen with a USB port, how would they know to report it? There's usually a delay between a device being hacked and you becoming aware of it being hacked as well. There isn't really any way to quantify the data on how often this happens really. Also you should check the mirrors. I have a video on my channel of checking into a hotel and there being a dodgy mirror :-) It happens

There are data cables, and there are charging cables. You cannot transfer data on a simple charge cable. Those are the cheaper cables you can buy anywhere. If you plug into a USB with a simple charge cable, you cannot be hacked, at least not that way, although there are lots of ways to be hacked wirelessly.
@HkmmotologsАй бұрын
There are Power only (for charging) usb cable, there will not be a data connection on those cables just + & - terminals. problem is charging will be slow on modern phones that has fast charging capabilities because fast charging requires data connection between charger and phone to "handshake " on proper charging voltage and protocols to establish. but slow charging is better than getting hacked :) and other solution is charge with your own power adapter as you mentioned instead of of usb wall socket
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
The removal of data pins does not affect charging speed, it will be down to the poor quality of the cable :) in any event, always make sure the pins are physically removed from the usb section and not simple disabled :D
@HkmmotologsАй бұрын
@SaffySprocket yeah, it doesn't anymore, my mistake, but it used to be before. Yeah cable that's not certified for USB- PD will not charge fast because of thinner wire being used. Those power only usb cable I mentioned is same as those USB data blocker adaptor , the data pins are not present at all physically. Buy cables from well known brands only
@bsidethecside2283Ай бұрын
With juice jacking powering the phone off will prevent data transfer as inactive. However, some (mainly older) devices power on when power is detected so making them vulnerable. More recent phones, less so. Consider setting the phone to demand a PIN before booting up to prevent code injection. A good awareness article- thanks

@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
Never reply to any spam messages, instead forward them to 7726 which is the UKs cyber security reporting number, they will text you back from that number to confirm what phone number sent it you, then they will go and investigate the person sending the texts. Never pick up from numbers you don't know. Spammers have robo callers that phone random numbers to check if they're "live" numbers. Ever had an empty phone call? Your number is being checked. After this, your number gets added to a list saying LIVE and sold illegally to spammers!

I can also remove your hard drive, put it into a bay, load it up as a USB device and gain access to your files without ever needing the password. I've repeatedly broken my phone and recovered my files this way without ever needing my password. Your PIN code means nothing to someone who knows how phones really work.

USB C requires access to to the data prongs, to mostly be used to active fast charging, or inform some chargers that a device is present. You should check to see if the USB Condom is USB C compatible. Don't rely of missing pins, as these may be needed to charge some modern models of phones, such as most Samsung phones, which will not charge with a straight through USB C to C cable, as the they are missing the load resistors, and diodes in the cable ends. This would also apply to USB A to C adapters. For older phones, a basic protector should work ok. Otherwise, just check if the USB Condom is compatible with your phone model.
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
If you're using a regular USB condom like I was, it can slow down fast charging since it blocks the communication needed for it. USB-C condoms are better for fast charging because USB-C has extra pins that handle fast charging negotiation separately from the data pins 🥰
@richardwalker4518Ай бұрын
Saffron, that was fabulous, thank you. I didn't know about the risk of the usb wall sockets, but now I do. A couple of points to add, in the event that you have to use public wifi (this happened to me recently when a foreign sim card wasn't compatible with my phone), does the use of a VPN mitigate the risks of public wifi?. Also, there is the tracking aspect with a google infested phone, so worth mentioning, putting your phone in a faraday bag while you are moving around should stop that. It's also delightfully simple, but of course when you arrive at your destination, it will come back online and download everything you missed during the day;-)
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
Yes, a VPN can help protect you from WiFi attacks by keeping your data encrypted so hackers can’t read it. However, it doesn’t stop everything, like phishing or certain device hacks, and doesn’t fully secure that first connection. For better protection, always use a VPN on public WiFi, turn off auto-connect, and stick to HTTPS sites when you can. My biggest tip is just avoid public WiFi when you're tired too. Most hacking is actually social engineering and you're more vulnerable when you're tired. A good example is signing into public WiFi, they request you validate your account with your number, you give them the code, it turns out to be a code sent by your service provider, and they steal your phone number and then hack all your accounts using reset password.
@richardwalker4518Ай бұрын
@@SaffySprocket Yeah, I find I turn off wifi all the time and it magically finds a way to reconnect, so maybe this is the autoconnect setting, um, yeah, I'll go to settings and look for that one:)👍Thanks again and keep it up!

Saffy, wouldn't it remove the risk from the WiFi's at the campgrounds/guesthouses if I use a VPN?
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
Yes and no, it's about how tech savvy you are If you connect to the fake Wi-Fi first before connecting to the VPN, a hacker could manipulate how your data is routed before it’s encrypted by the VPN. The other route a hacker may use is fake login portals on a fake WiFi :) We can't be fully safe 100% of the time, it's just about minimising risks! Google some information on how to spot fake WiFi portals, the better you get at identifying them, the more confident you'll feel about using public WiFi hotspots

What's going on? When you talk I can only hear you through the left speaker on the headphones. Everything else comes through loud and clear through both speakers. 🤔 ...By the way, great advice. Thanks! I'm shopping for cable condoms right now.

Brilliant vlog Saffy, you are not as stupid as you look. (old Scottish saying).

Have USB on my bike(s). Lots of cheap Chinese USB cables are charge only. OMG UK power socket plugs are ….huge. 😂
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
You want to be careful with cheap cables regardless, they can ruin your phone chatting port!
@DrVulpineАй бұрын
@ Too true. I mostly throw away Chinese cables, but there are still a few brands/names which are good. If you’re not sure, throw random cables away. I have had to repair/replace USB interfaces on phones wrecked by bad/cheap connectors. So as Saffy says, best practice first.

Good Grief!! Riding thru Mud Holes and over Rocks Seems like Thick Gravy Goodness compared to the real-life hazards that are always present in our modern world... Carry on Kid!

Modern tech isn't all it's cracked up to be sometimes is it? Feel like I'd rather take my chances with the rocks at times

BTW Saffy - this video & the one before, the EICMA Tuareg one, the audio's quite quiet & only coming out of the left speaker / headphone. It's only happening with your videos so not my headphones about to die on me.

That's not good! I'll have to take a look at my microphone

@@Daytona2 I'm happy in law 😂 I don't have the brains for the tech industry. Kudos to the nerds who are good at it though because that stuff is Hella confusing

Is it just me thinks some smartphones come 'pre-hacked' direct from the manufacturers? 🤔😂
@SaffySprocketАй бұрын
Correct! Chinese branded phones legally have to have backdoors built-in for the Chinese government. In the UK, phones come pre installed with "bloatware" which is a bunch of pre installed crap you don't want

@@SaffySprocket Why I use a custom ROM on a Galaxy S24 Ultra, completely free of the usual bloatware and plethora of brain-rotting social media apps. Keep yup the good work Saffy! 👍
