Its cam chain tensioner bro. My ninja 650 started making exact same noise on cold starts at 40k miles. Never performed any valve checks from day one. Just changed the timing chain tensioner with manual one from ebay and its all good. runs like a champ. Have almost 44k on it, daily commuter.

Late comment but I recently ran into the same issue, and for how common it is, it was damn near impossible to find a solution. Thank you

Sounds like the cam chain buddy.The Kawis are known to do that.lose the top bolt then the bottom until you HEAR 1 click..just one click and you should be good to goo..

The automatic tensioner is supposed to click but if the sound bothers you, you could either replace it with a manual CCT or pull out a notch on the automatic CCT leg

not to sound stupid, but what do you mean that you took out the cam chain tensioner and " took of two notches"? i would like to know as I'm purchasing a non running motorcycle so that I can fix my self at my pace self teach myself about mechanics. Thank you.
@pkdann646 жыл бұрын
Andrew Ordonez The cam chain tensioner has a "leg" that extends out to push on the chain guide. The longer the leg, the more tension it keeps on the chain. The leg has grooves/notches so as you pull out it locks in the length. More like a ratchet. In my video I pulled out two notches meaning I extended the leg out to expose two more grooves on the leg and made it a bit longer. I hope it explains it. Thanks.

Think you could help me out? I ride a zx9r 1999 and I’m having the same problem and sounds exactly like mine does right now except I am losing power. I can get one good pull and then the whole system winds down without command and shuts off, it does this every time. I can start it back up and rev it just fine if i hold it at 3k then rev other wise if I rev at idle it delays and sputs and drops under idle then comes back up to idle. The other day while riding it got so bad it sounded like I was on 2 cylinders but that wasn’t the case. I have to rev up to 7k and launch just to get out of a standstill otherwise it would die if I let go of clutch and give normal gas. I’ve replaced just about everything other than things inside of the engine block. Got an idea??
@pkdann646 жыл бұрын
Sam Wellington I would start to check for exhaust leaks first, especially around the headers. Did you do that already?

Sam Wellington check the area where the headers connect to the engine head

I did the same thing on my bike but I took 1 click and I still hear a little ticking, do you think i should give the cct one more click ,and how do I know if the cam chain is too tight
@pkdann643 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell when it is too tight. I would do 1 click and ride it for a few days before going up again if the tick didn't stop. Too much tension will wear the chain out

Can the valve problems cause a outfunction of the spark plugs?
@pkdann642 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware of. The spark plugs get their signal from the timing system which in turn is governed by the ECU. However, if the valves open/close at the wrong time, it will not sync with the firing sequence and result in a rough run at best. Worst is when the valve opening does not sync with the piston movement. In that case your piston with hit the valves and result in a catastrophic engine failure.
@robbenalfans55012 жыл бұрын
@@pkdann64 yes but the spark i dont think will go out of function because of the valve,maybe is the fould of CDI packet or of the pulse

Motogenix 99 when was the last time you adjusted the valves? Do you have any significant loss of power? Also it is possible that the tensioner is in the process of adjusting
