Rode a new Street Triple R yesterday after getting off my S1000XR, and oh man, what a sweet package. I've been interested in the Duke 790 since it was announced, but I really like you can get premium components on the top spec STR. The brakes on the Street Triple are unreal; the extra power, extra fuel capacity, make it an overall better street bike. Tough call here, but I think I'll pay the extra $ for the Triumph here.
@windyrun79795 жыл бұрын
Interesting in that I went the other way (sort of). I had the str765 and found it lacking in power, way more buzzy (especially at 5500rpm) than my daytona and maybe more than my '18 s1000r, and the gearing between 1st and 2nd was too far apart given its torque for my riding style on twisty roads. The seat on the str765 wasn't very comfy either partly since its so leaned forward. Brakes on the str were excellent for me though. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on an mt10 which I found fun but I am so far really glad I switched from the 765 to the s1000r.
@CubanRider5 жыл бұрын
@@windyrun7979 I rode the MT-10 in TN (I made a video of it), sweet bike with a nice powerband and lots of mid-range torque, wheelied super easily. It's a great bike, but power-wise is closer to the Street Triple 765 than to your S1000R. Maybe I would have to spend a lot longer time with the STR to find its flaws, but from riding it on a canyon road (see my latest video) two days ago, I found it super nimble with a great engine, a phenomenal mid-range bike that would be perfect for tight canyon roads. Your S1000R would probably keep up and even pull away on the less technical turns, but your bike really falls under a different category, it rivals the Tuono 1100 and Super Duke R.

I have a 2018 BMW S1000R and a 2019 790 Duke and there is no comparison between them. The S1000r is way more refined, way faster and the quick shifter is so much smoother. But the fun factor on the 790 is definitely there, and I like the riding position. The handling is amazing. It feels so light and nimble. The parallel twin is torquey. Just a totally different feel between the two, whereas I think the TSR RS would feel like a smaller and slower version of the S1000r. I didn't look at the TST before buying the 790 Duke but wish I would have. The is a reason KTM calls it "The Scalpel". And it has character with way it rides, looks and sounds. I didn't test ride the Triumph Street Triple RS, but I did sit on one and felt good. I just think with it's more linear power deliver, that it would be a slower version of the S1000R, minus a cylinder. I would need to ride the Triumph to make a fair comparison of the two. KTM is coming out with the 890 Duke R and that could put it really close to the Triumph as far as performance.

It gives you a strong appreciation of what supermoto bikes are like without race (that is, replace your piston every 40 hours and do oil changes after every ride) bike maintenance. It's 350lbs curb weight which is vastly lighter than the 420lb curb weight of the Triumph RS. Every time you go into a corner that lack of weight is amazing. Sure, that's 100lbs heavier than a Husky FS450 race bike but it also has a 110 mile range and 0-60 in the 3.6sec range and a top speed of over 115mph and it can do that all day long without exploding and it's also street legal. I don't need to go faster than 100mph and it gets me there very quickly. All my fun is had from 20mph to 100mph. I've had big liter bikes that sizzle by 160mph with no problems but on the street I can't use that at all and I don't really want to lug around a big boat that's engineered to put 170HP to the ground. I'd rather put that into weight savings with less power. For my uses canyon carving and mountain goat road ripping it's an ideal machine. Would I want to go from LA to NYC on it? @@exnihilo415 Having owned both the Duke 690 and 790, I think the 790 is a nice upgrade. The 790 doesn't have the snotty torque at low RPM's, but the suspension, auto-shifter, and electronics are great. And to be frank, the 690 tranny was horrible. It was the biggest reason I upgraded. I would love to hear what people mean by "fun". I rode the yamaha fz bikes that were supposed to be "fun" and they felt cheap and, quite frankly, unsafe. That's what the 'light, flickable' comments make me think of. I've ridden alot of naked bikes and sport touring bikes and I ended up buying a 2014 speed triple, because fun to me meant feeling like a boss in the corners because my bike is planted and inspires confidence, as well as being comfortable and sounding/looking cool. I always get compliments on it, ALWAYS. These KTMs, although good bikes I'm sure, look somewhat amateurish and cheap. I'm a little bias but I was not expecting the KTM to outdo the speed triple, and although I have not ridden the KTM, I doubt it has. It's probably just different and the street triple has been around forever, and they review a new one every year. The triumphs are a gift that keep on giving. You buy one and a couple of months later it has permeated into your soul and before you know it your in love because they are truly wonderful, dependable, quality bikes....true story:) (This message sponsored and approved by a Triumph owner)

I think my favorite shootouts always involve two bikes. Nicely done! I understand the pricing issue made you choose the r vs the rs triple, but really, the KTM should have been compared to the RS. Pricing should not have been an exclusion factor here. Many would argue that the R and RS are aimed at somewhat different crowds and the KTM fits the RS crowd better. With the RS, your conclusion would have been different, and the issue would have been whether the better bike was worth the extra dollars.

I owned Duke 390 and Street Triple 675. My friends have 390, 790 adv, Street Triple 765rs, Trident 660, Tiger 660. I drove them. Yes KTM bikes are affordable, powerful and driving costs are lower than Triumph's but I can clearly say that Triumph's build quality are better than KTM's. Especially on engine side. I also think Street Triple so much smoother on the road because of wide gear band and 3 piston.

So even with better suspension, better brakes, better comfort, more power, better tyres, a bigger fuel tank, the KTM is better? For one thing, traction control has 4 settings on the STR, off/rain/road/sport - not on/off as stated as well as some weird statements about the max horse power on the STR being passed the redline on the KTM (wow a 2 cylinder having lower rpm than a triple?!), this review had some really bad repetition and really sounded like the only discernible benefits of the newer KTM were its lightness and a quick shift. Heck we know that they are both good bikes and it comes down to personal preference which one you would buy, but there was an obvious bias in this review. Buy a quick shifter for the STR and it seems like its the superior bike then!
@stephenimsong34625 жыл бұрын
Well there's more to a motorcycle than the individual components. Engine placement, CG, frame geometry, etc. Like it was mentioned in the video, some things are hard to explain and you cant go off the paper specs all the time. It was obvious there was some sort of "X" factor here is why they decided on the KTM.

Good review, MOrons. As an owner of a '13 STR I can definitely see how they'd find that the 765 feels more lethargic than the 790; as great an all-arounder and sporty ride my bike is, it doesn't do "playful" quite as well as I had expected to. It can be helped by changing tires, but it feels more "serious" to me than, say, an MT-09. It's almost the difference between James Bond and Eggsy Unwin

The scrambler herritage of the KTM is really evident on that, yeah alot of fun but feels like a 'young-mans' sports bike, the finish and quality of the Brit bike, really impressed me. I think its better looking too, bugs me how far away from the Scalpel concept they got. I have the Triumph in my mind as the bike to have, although the price is really impressive on the KTM, yes for the price difference you could do updates, like that ugly exhaust and the suspension and non existant rear brake, maybe even a power commander (other models are available). I still feel the little 'street' is the bike i want to ride on a Sunday out the box... ps: do you think KTM made a mistake not doing a 'R' version, with all the bells an whistles? anyways keep up the good work, greetings from GB!
