Here in Japan The Trident is within $200 (U.S.D.) of the street triple s. Sorry to anyone who wants it, brought the last Street Tiple S in 🇯🇵 home with me last night. (Have a video on my channel comparing it)

I've a 2020 Street Triple R but was really impressed by the Trident, around town the Trident's the better bike and just as fast 0 to 60 mph, IMO it depends what you want the bike for, if you mostly do round town/commuting the Trident is perfect but if you want to push your bike to its potential the Triple R has that top end rush which is addictive.

I'm just 21 (yes i think that's young), and I've ridden R1,CBR1000RRR-SP, ZH2, Ducati Panigale V4, Daytona 675r, R6, Ninja ZX 10, ninja Zx6, Ninja 300, RE 350,Himalayan,650s, t100, and speed triple, i had owned a R1, but sold it for other reasons and investments, and got a cycle instead of the bike, and now i am looking forward to getting a Trident 660 , or the Triumph Speed triple, cuz even after riding all i have ridden, ( even been to track a few times) is that no matter what, 200hp is not needed , and all these bikes are great, these 200hp r1s , Panigales, e.t.c, are pretty useless from ergonomics, useless low end, in the street what i suggest is the street triple, or the speed triple . The trident is great too. Cuz : Such a beautiful sound , the exhaust sound changes as the rev increases , from sophisticated in the low to the roaring in the high , Mechanically (a mechanical engineer here) , and as a bike enthusiast, 3 Cyls are the best when it comes to power delivery, low end torque + top end rush , and due to triumphs T-plane crankshaft (perfect secondary balance) this thing revs very high for a engine that size , and reaches redline quicker than any I4... I've plenty experience, owned an R1 (sold last year and got a cycle), r6, zx 10r, the busa, Zh2, RSV4, panigale, cbr 1000, and z900 , daytona 675, street triple 675RS, RE bikes, and what not , but i find three cyls the best among inline 4s and 2s (Vs are better ). (Except some radicals i4s ).

@@raywite6665 You're absolutely right about the street triple being a second faster 0 to 60mph, what I should've said was the Trident feels just as fast (0 to 60) because of the way it revs out so quickly.

1)Street triple wet weight is 185kg 2)Brembo MCs brake levers, brembo master cylinder 3)fully adjustable suspension 4) 121hp(40hp more) 79nm (15nm more than trident) 5)better headlights in terms of visibility 6) better power to weight ratio. So it's worth the extra 3 grand

Superb comparison- pros and cons. Thank you! I would rather wait a bit, collect the extra money and pickup the Street Triple. Imagine spending the money on the Trident and six months down the line looking at every ST and feeling I should have bought the ST. A good pre owned 765 could also be better proposition to the Trident. As always, each to his/her own. Cheers

Thanks for the review. Personal choice, but just sold a Street Triple S that was a few years old, had the 765cc engine and it was a brilliant bike to start with. Easy to ride if you keep the revs low, then mental mode with higher revs. If I had to choose between these, I would go with a low mileage 1-2 year old Street Triple - cheaper than the Trident and enough to keep you interested for more years as your skills grow.

Hi , I'm getting a very low mileage (about 7000 km ) street triple s 2017 , for a decent price , Im kinda a beginner myself with not much experience, have ridden the street 750 for about a year, I really like the striple but just confused if it'd be too much power, I don't push the bike as much as the roads in my country don't allow that to happen anyways , I can only push a bit on highways

I put a deposit on the Street Triple RS around the time you did the first test of the 🔱 and decided after watching to change the deposit to the trident. The RS is the better bike but unless you are a track day regular or live somewhere with minimal law enforcement you are never going to get full use of it in the UK. The trident is just as good for 90 % of the riding I do and still capable of being pushed past my meagre riding abilities I’m sure. A great little bike that seems to split opinions looks wise.

Nice review. One thing that I never see mentioned in reviews of bikes that are aimed at the new rider segment is that these bikes are also wonderful for older riders who are climbing down from the heights of the power/specs curve and just want to have fun on a bike, and who know how motorcycles should perform and how they should make YOU feel. At 67 years old, I'm not going to do any track days, and I don't necessarily have the coins for top-spec components in every department. I just want a well-engineered bike that is capable on the road and that doesn't pretend to be a race replica. A bike like the Trident really pushes my buttons - it has styling that echoes the classic bikes of yesteryear (I used to ride a 1973 Bonneville, and currently have a 2010 Moto Guzzi V7) but in a modern package with a sporty motor, more than decent suspension, great tires, and a well-balanced tech package that doesn't look like you're riding around with your television strapped to the triple tree. I can't wait to test ride one and see if I like it as much as I think I will!

Have had the Trident for almost a year now. Great bike for good fun. Here in India, anything over 120 kmph is too risky n therefore, I guess Trident makes more sense. Yet, without a doubt Street Triple looks definitely better finished. One more thing, Trident got much more smoother after the first service.

I have a Street Triple 675 and recently loaned a Trident from Triumph whilst I got my 12K service. I must say the bike looks great and Id imagine it would suffice if your just commuting around town and the odd ride in the twisties. I found the engine lacking in the low range, and also towards the high end of the power band. It also felt extremely light and 'toy-like' which i didnt enjoy at all, although the handling was great. Also the sound of the engine/exhaust left a lot to be desired, I suppose we have Euro 5 to thank for that. Having ridden it for a couple of days I was pleased to give it back for my baby. Personal opinion so take it with a pinch of salt but I much prefer bikes before they started putting a ton of electronic rider aides on them... 6/10 for me.

Nice comparison vid. I wouldn’t say the street triple is for the “more experienced” rider, people often use that phrase: “more experienced”, but experience doesn’t equal wanting all that extra stuff. I’ve been riding for God knows how many years and I’m sure I’d be just as happy with the Trident with it’s more rudimentary suspension setup etc; because, for me at least, experience doesn’t mean automatically wanting more tricks on my bike. Cheers 🤙🏻

Great comparison. I’m due to ride the Trident in the next few weeks, but have already ridden the ST RS - which was a great bike. The Trident appears to be a good choice for the money if you want something a little more ‘up market’ compared to say, an MT-07 (not that that is a bad bike at all!)

Here in Australia the Trident is only sold in the learner 55 hp version. And in contrast to the UK, they can't be upgraded to full spec. Even if the change is possible (usually it's pretty easy), it's illegal to change a learner bike to a full spec bike - and if it's discovered then registration and insurance are deemed void and the rider/owner can face serious liability issues. It's a great looking bike and a pity that the importer only supplies the low spec model.

I had the same dilemma. Beginner rider. Had a test ride on both. And liked both very much. And found it a really tough decision. Went for the Street Triple. The R version. Reasons for this: the Street Triple just felt just a bit more premium… The rear brake pedal is solid aluminium while the one on the Trident felt more…. Rubbery…. And it offered a bit more punch. And give me more to grow into. Price difference not too much. If they give me Trident 660 as loaner bike I will still drive it with a smile on my face. And know many people will be perfectly happy with it. Did not find the extra bucks for the RS worth it for me. I liked the analog/lcd combo on the R more and the other stuff is only more useful on the racetrack…… If only they slap a better TFT on the streety (with the crispness of the Trident) then I would be really tempted but the current version does not cut it for me.

i really like the way the Trident looks, the bug eye headlights on the Street Triple are not right at all. BUT, i would like something in the 100 HP range...so like a Trident RS where peak Torque and HP come on as low in the RMP range as possible hitting like 100 HP, add on a step up in shocks, and like the flat black paint with a blood red/pearl frame...that is the ticket right there. But was put off by the alarming increase in insurance compared to my CB650R. I think it was about £3,000 difference. Still, I'm testing the new MT09 soon, so may have a similar problem (clean licence 3 years' no claims (MT07 stolen by London vermin is the reason for not more).

Good review , as always :-D As I suspected, and you seem to confirm, the Striple S is likely to be dropped. Once the Trident came out, well I just couldn't see Triumph selling many Striple 660 S's at just over £8K. I don't think they sold that many before the Trident, because they were quite an expensive A2 friendly bike to buy and insure. Non A2 riders on a budget would get a Striple R. Fuel about 0.73 Kg per litre. Oil possibly a bit more per litre. Water 1Kg / litre. I reckon the fluids on a Striple will be about 18 Kg. So dry weight plus about 18Kg = wet weight. So around 185 Kg ish for Striples.

I've had a go of a Striple RS, yet to get a ride on a Trident. I had a 2018 second hand Striple 660 derestricted to 94 BHP. The Striple RS was better, but below 7000 rpm, and road legal speeds the Striple RS wasn't that much better than a Striple S 660 94 BHP bike. So on the performance comparison of the two bikes here, I'm guessing up to 70 MPH there probably isn't much in it. You've tried them both, would you agree ? If that is the case, I guess point 4 for the Trident, is "If you only want to ride at road legal speeds, it's performance is almost as good as the Striple RS and you're less likely to get speeding tickets" :-D

Nice one Bob. Thank you. It’s interesting (and a much better comparison) using both models, in LAMS configuration. As for Australia and New Zealand we have had a detuned 660 street triple for over 7 years now. Now, with the inclusion of the Trident, AUS and NZ only get it in the LAMS setup limits for power. So both are the same in power and torque and the same wet weight. However the Street Triple (in this version) is $2,540 AUD ($1,400 €) more expensive ride away! Having ridden both back to back and if I was on a learner (LAMS) license I would definitely go with the Trident and spend the difference on the available upgrades. It’s a shame we don’t get the full power version of the Trident here like we do with the 765 Street Triple R and RS. 👍😎🇦🇺

Great comparison that was raking my head since the trident came into scene. Always wanted a ST but the power is a lot for Indian roads and hardly any tracks nearby to brush on your riding skills. Trident makes more sense but you term the power delivery as 'soft' which makes me wonder if I want that compromise. Guess I'll have to hop on each of em in a row and see for myself. Thanks for the pros n cons though. Cheers mate!

By the trident you can’t go to camping at the weekends with the second passenger I think so it is useless but it looks very good, modern retro which i like. I am looking a bike for that purpose and ducati scrambler is very expensive.

I'm bike shopping at the moment for my first bike, love the look of the trident from all angles, the street triple looks great too but for me I just really dislike the headlight/dash unit on how it sits on the bike and after watching this review I have taken the triple off my list, now I'm down too the trident and KTM Duke 790 🤔

Had the Duke for a year and hated its low speed traffic manners. Very jerky. Test rode the Trident last week and what a difference!

@@markderby22 I have a Duke 690 it has very good torque but in traffic at low speeds low gears it rattles and jerks like fuck. It’s a single and I do love it however I rode the trident and did my test on that bike both mod1 and mod2, smooth bike lovely to ride for hours. I’m considering getting the street triple as it just sounds incredible and looks beautiful.

I just hope that the new Street Triple they're working on will further the gap between the 2 as it's about time for an update and it really does need to have one if they are to compete with the likes of the new Duke 890 and others. Fingers crossed for a 865cc engine and better ergos. MUCH better ergos. Namely riding position.

If street triple came with a round headlight, I would have bought it at once. Hate the front light dash module (from the side), the front looks ok though.

For that price on the street they really should put some down pipes on that are a bit more rust proof looks like it’s been dunked in the sea for a few months and they aren’t very accessible for cleaning if my 09 street is anything to go by

@@motobob i second that, the mt07 is a good competitor, although maybe not as good value overall but depends on the riding experience as i think the mt07 will feel the more fun bike. Looking forward to this comparison now!

Nice video. I work in Bristol and often pop into Fowlers and have owned loads of bikes but never bought one there despite my name. For the last 4 years I've been riding a KTM 390 duke as a second bike as away from motorways and duel carriageways its so much fun. I'll love to see a back to back with trident to see which bike puts a bigger smile on your face. The KTM is smaller but a lot cheaper but I'm not so sure its less enjoyable. Btw the STRS has a terrible TFT now don't you think. I mean what's going on with the rev counter?

Triumph needs to make a 900cc Trident, tune the engine for midrange and give it too spec suspension and brakes and handling, make it bigger so normal people don’t look like they are riding a children’s bike. Keep the same display, only make it a bit bigger so easily read by older riders, make the bike top quality. So really a bike for older riders in their forties/fifties, a power bike that can be used every day and costs max £15.000 a bit like the Honda cb 1000r neo. I think such a bike would appeal to mature riders that have the cash to spend on a top quality bike.

The Trident is a standard motorcycle while the speed triple is a naked sport bike. Shouldn't even compare the two as they are made for totally different group of riders. I bought the Yamaha FZ-09 and I get the best of both worlds. Great in the city and an absolute hooligan if you want it to be....

Will the Trident power wheelie? If it will, i'd get that one. Otherwise? A used gen 1 Street triple R, please! That bike's just unbeatable fun for the money AND it has the triple roar. It's better looking than the newer Streets as well, IMO. In fact, i tried the Street triple R and the Speed triple (2009 or 2010 i think) on a demo and the Street was way more fun than the Speed! It just was! Lighter, more nimble and with a more entertaining engine. Also the Street R power wheelied on command as easily as the Speed did. The Speed triple felt old and stiff in comparison. This is from a 5'8"-5'9" guy with a good 17 stone/240 pounds.

Got 6 bikes and I have to ask why, why do motorcycle manufactures put the key ignition and all that wiring on the forks? Love the tridents key position.. I love the looks of the Trident, gorgeous in white. beautiful from the driving position also. Have a 2010 orange crush STR 675, 36,000 miles and still makes me smile, but I find myself riding my 1988 honda 647 hawk more and more. But as I am getting older the super tight leg position and vibrations on my hawk are getting old. I believe the motorcycle wizards made the Trident for me. P.S. I am a canyon and mountain sport rider and at 5' 7" I checked out the STR 765 low ride and was disappointed. The lower seat height is achieved completely by less suspension travel and it really effects handling and ride quality. I guess everyone knows what I am buying soon. My thinking is the Trident will take the place of 3 bikes, Oh the separation pains.

Can’t afford either in India so I’m just watching for kicks. Having said that in a few years I’ll be able to afford one and if I’m spending so much I don’t mind spending that bit more for a Street Triple which just has more and also looks better according to me.

Are the brake lines braided on the Trident? All abs bikes should have braided lines. It's a much bigger job the install braided lines to the abs actuator.

Can anyone recommend which version I should get? I'm 63-years old and in great physical condition, 5'11" height, 175-lbs weight, with a 34-inch pants inseam. The bike would mostly be used just outside a small city in suburb/rural short rides. I have not owned a bike in 40-years. Previously I had a Honda 500-Four for a few years, then a Honda 750-Four for several more years. I thought about getting a new Honda CB650R, but one of the KZbin channel guys (MotoJitsu) suggested I first buy a Yamaha FZ-07 or MT-07 to see if I wanted to get back into riding, although I heard they were lurchy with a lower-quality suspension that does not promote rider confidence. Any thoughts?
