I've had an MT-07 (2020) for 3 years now, and I cannot fault it. It's great fun to ride, reliable, quick, nimble, and looks fantastic. I rode a Hornet over the weekend, and tomorrow I'll put a deposit down on one. It had everything the Yam had (apart from the looks), and then some. The clutch and gearchanges were incredibly smooth, it was quicker, the optional quickshifter is fantastic, the bluetooth integration for satnav etc is great, and somehow there's even less wind buffeting at higher speeds. I've not been riding long, and I've only ever owned Yamaha bikes. I'll be genuinely sad to see the back of my beloved MT-07, but the Hornet impressed so much on that one test ride that I'm not sure how Yamaha will sell many more MT-07's this year.

I would have bought a used MT-09 or XSR900 over any of these bikes. Yes I'm talking used bike, but probably around the same price as a new Hornet/mt-07. I own XSR900 -22 and MT-07 -20 and once you ride the 900cc tripple, the paralell twin feels like quiet, slow tractor. The only thing the MT-07 is good at is the price I think. Its a great commuter bike, if you are a short person. An XSR900/MT-09 probably feels like a Fiat Uno compared to a super sportbike.....but the price (both purchase and insurance) will double or tripple. :)

The MT is showing it's age and dated low end technology ... the bike has barely changed in a decade or so other than re-styling and very minor tweaks. Time for a major update or maybe even totally new model. Honda have smashed it with the Hornet .. it's going to steal a LOT of sales from the Yamaha ...
@gbner9991
@gbner9991 Жыл бұрын
@@MotoGoato True. But I think Yamaha is taking so long because it will be big update to the CP2 engine, which is mounted in multiple bikes . My guess is that it will get a ride by wire system. That will allow them to give all the features that it's currently lacking, especially in the T7 and Tracer 7. At the moment they have reached a limit with the tech on these bikes and I think costumers won't be happy if they go for another round of useless updates like we got until now.

I like the looks of this MT07 more, but I'd prefer the performance of the Honda... I'm a 5'7" woman, so it'd probably fit me really well. And as for the tires, if the MT07 has better tires, then I guess I'd be switching to those on the second set for the Honda (or another comparable pair that plays well with the Hornet). I wonder if I could also take the rear-view-mirror stalks from the MT07 as well, then repaint parts of the Hornet... I'd love to see the lights from the Aprilia RS660 on the Hornet with the adaptive lighting for corners.

Great comparison review; very well considered and fun to watch. I test rode the Hornet last week and fell in love with it almost immediately. Loads of torque, really agile, lightweight, sounds awesome (even with stock exhaust), really easy to ride. I originally had my heart set on the Neo Café CB650R, but as soon as I sat on the Hornet it just felt right. An hour later I placed my order. Also, I think it looks great too! Not classic like the CB650R naked perhaps, but sharp and purposeful. Much better in the flesh than on images or fillm imo

Fun comparison! Let's hope the Hornet (and maybe the GSX8S) will finally give Yamaha the push they need to thoroughly upgrade the mt-07. I mean the last facelift... A weird looking headlight and funky colours won't make up for poor suspension, axial brakes and a right side up front fork. Also 70 bhp suddenly seems like a bit of a dud compared to the Hornet, GSX8S and also the Tuono 660 which has a comparable engine setup!

The MT07 is still ideal for a shorter and reasonably light person starting to ride (35 kw version) - then the (low) ride height, suspension (soft), weight (low with 184 kgs wet) and handling (easy, also at low speeds) tend to shine. Alternative (if the budget should be available): The MT09 in the 35 kw version (189 kgs wet) 😉

I've had a lot of Yamahas in my life, and only Yamahas in my garage currently. My buddy had a cb500r that was really pathetic on power, handled fine but it wasn't anything to write home about, and the engine characteristic was just bland, no revs, not a good sound. Honda's for the past few years have been in a weird place in the market, usually down on power, and steep on price compared to the competition, but this new Honda fills me with hope. Yamaha's had the corner for power and reliability, and of recently prices have been climbing astronomically. That Honda makes a GREAT noise, has the power numbers to back it up (and not by a small margin), you get reliability as Honda is known for, AND you get into it for less money. LOVE it, that's the competition I want to see, I'm strongly considering Honda for my next bike.

The suspension felt soft and bouncy. The fueling was great though and throttle very forgiving at low speeds, it felt like an easy going lazy bike, but at the same time felt a bit cheap in terms of build quality. Not sure about the Yamaha's top end being "interesting" .... unless by interesting you mean "a bit lacking". They have great bottom end and mid range grunt but start to run out of breath fairly early ... very sweet in the 30 to 80mph range though. I enjoyed the one I owned for a year and a half or so. No doubt the Honda has it beaten very comprehensively though ... seems like a better bike all around and for less money too, could even spec the quickshifter on to it and it would still be cheaper than the MT, plus the Honda quickshifter is a proper two way job not just the up shifter thats offered as an option on the MT.

Yamaha should update the mt07's engine and Bore it out a little just like they did with the mt09 in 2021 from 847cc to 889cc maybe from a 689cc to 749cc for the 07 so that it can keep up with the hornet. Although it definitely doesn't need more power it'll help with the marketing

Crazy how expensive these "cheap" bikes have gotten. I remember buying my MT-07 brand new in 2016 for $6000 CAD, which is like 3600 pounds.

I really wanted to see this comparison. love the zero to 100 test. I wish you had included the new Suzuki twin and the Triumph Triton in this video. The Hornet seems like a great bike. except the looks don't do it for me. especially the ones with the red forks.

Initially I liked the red frame and forks, but now I think it looks cheap and nasty, especially as they seem to have two different shades of red. I agree, the yellow and metallic grey models look a lot classier. Great review as always MN.

Pretty good analysis in my opinion. But, things considered, MT07 is basically a 10 year old bike that stills holding the position in there, but has been overtaken by the new/fresher Honda CB750. Electronics, new engine, dash, etc. The problem with the CB750, is that literally everyone (and myself), was waiting a 4 cylinder 600 (the true Honda Hornet) and we got that. Carries this feeling of "disappointment" I would say, that makes it not shine as it should. And the aesthetics, I would prefer the MT07 over the CB750, but that would be more a matter of personal taste. Very nice video, again!

That’s what I thought until I rode one last week, I’m never buying an inline 4 again! The hornets engines way better, sounds better and has instant low down power you don’t get with an inline 4. Honda made the right decision with the engine.

Booking a test ride. If I can get on with it I'll buy it, else it's 2nd hand market and a bit more premium... But tbh I'd like a relatively hassle free 90ish hp bike that's good fun, so it likely will get a purchase

if the CB750 is .. then it’s only taken Honda 8 years to catch up , the MT-07 came out in 2015 and won bike of the year everywhere . So well done to Honda for finely catching up .. and Xtra well done to Yamaha for bringing out a brilliant bike in 2015 & ever since.

I'm an old school Hornet owner (02 600 model) and had a chance to ride one of these over the weekend here in Germany. I managed to clock up about 350km's in the time i had it and tbh once i handed the bike back i didn't have one twinge of sadness. Its an ok bike but not as good as my older Hornet ( not using rose tinted spectacles btw). Too many oddities for me to truly like it, throttle, mirrors, steering to name a few. The mid range of the newer model is fantastic i must admit, plenty of overtaking grunt, but the bike "for me" summed up as a whole is uninspiring. It's lost its "Hornet-ness". This is the marmite bike, some people will love it and others won't.

I think the original was genuinely to trying to do something a bit different. This one seems to be a good engine but in a really bland looking bike. Almost as though it’s searching for an identity, almost feels like a CB750F. Did you find the throttle snatchy just off fully closed?
@ChunterGB
@ChunterGB Жыл бұрын
@@BikingChap yes, like it was kind of fuel starved, not very useful around a slow roundabout. I think its down to the fly by wire throttle, but i didn't like it.

@@ChunterGB got it. Honda also have this issue on the AT and NT1100, distinctly abrupt coming off a closed throttle. Not so bad if you’re caning it but tiresome if you’re pottering commuting. All down to trying to hit emission limits I don’t doubt.

13:28 you're tapping out the bass limits on my laptop with that background music. I'd buy the MT, it looks way better and seems more polished. Granted Yamaha has had more time with that bike. Even though the Hornet is a blast from the past, it's a new package. I'm sure future iterations will be better if they keep it going.

Loved the video! I like the style and the direct comparison between the two. I am curious because you brought up the Suzuki and Triumph. If you bring the Suzuki 8S into the conversation, you may have to talk about the KTM 890, MT09sp, Ducati Monster, Triumph Street Triple, . If the Hornet and MT07 is the "middle weight naked" category, what about the 800-900cc bikes? Beefy boy Middle weights? Heavy-middle weights? Light Heavyweights?

I think the horsepower and cost is how the bikes should be placed. actual weights would really mess things up. As in the past a 900 fireblade was lighter than a cbr600f I believe a mt-09 is actually lighter than the Gsx-8 .

90-100 horsepower in a 400 plus pound bike makes perfect power/weight fit the street. You do not need 200 horsepower, $20,000 plus bikes. Harley’s CVO $50,000 for a motorcycle. I think Any motorcycle over $20,000 is crazy. This is from someone that owns a Super Duke and MV AGusta Dragster 800rr Pirelli edition. Middle weight class is just fine
