Ridden both bikes and a monster 797, sv650 was the best of them all. Made in Japan, V-Twin character, Trellis rigid chassis, timeless style. Just needed a full race exhaust, seat retrim, sintered front pads and minor upgraded suspension. Now it's a weapon, 20,000km of happiness and its the first bike I have no intention of selling. Can't recommend enough.

This was a really great video. I watch alot of motorcycle test and comparo videos and the truth is, most of them suck. They give almost not REAL world information and rarely give a difinitive answer. Also, the reviewers are rarely super likeable. Finally, I'm so sick of seeing bikes designed only for street use, tested on the track and having their ratings affected by how they perform on a track. Most buyers of these types of bikes will never take them to a track. You guys did a GREAT job. You seem like cool guys who'd be fun to hang out with, you ride the way I do, you tested the bikes in the environment they were designed for and you gave real, honest opinions about them without holding anything back. Subscribed for sure.

@@thatstheguy07 i'm 6,2" and bought the SV650X after test driving a normal SV650 and it's easily driveable and your legs are in a comfortable position. I rode an MT-07 on my driving lessons and i felt cramped on it, my knee hit the wide angle on the tank, so i couldn't comfortably sit all the way to the front of the saddle, thus having less grip while riding. Also the sound of the SV650 stock is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. The MT-07 sounds like a scooter, you need to invest in a good exhaust system.

I owned a 2015 FZ-07, and I now own a 2020 SV650. There’s definitely pros and cons for either one, but the SV650 shows that 20 years of experience. I haven’t ridden the slightly updated MT-07, but it’s due for a full update for 2021 and I’m curious to see if Yamaha fixes the suspension and brakes. The SV650 engine is a gem, but there’s something about the Yamaha CP2 that feels more special. The low-mid torque is definitely stronger and it’s a bit smoother with its power delivery. And it sounds badass uncorked while the SV sounds better stock. Can’t lose either way.

Also sort of in the same situation (although not looking to immediately replace my Ninja 650). I used to have a '99 SV650 (loved it, but eventually traded it in because I could get some electrical issues fixed), so that gives me the want to have the SV650 again, but with the improvements that have been made to the 2018+ MT-07 (they changed it from the FZ-07 name) the MT-07 might just be the better all around bike, since they fixed some of the issues mentioned in this video (like the suspension), made it look more aggressive, and I like how they changed the headlight and moved the blinkers to the side.. When I do end up selling my Ninja and getting one of these two, it's not going to be easy. For instance, I'm not wild on the weird flyscreen thing above the light on the SV (really like the replacement they have for it on the Scrambler version of the SV they made in France, but I don't think that's available as a bolt on for sale), but I am also not sure I like how the 'tank' on the MT-07 is actually just a plastic cover that goes over the real tank, which you only see if you take it apart.

Yeah it has soft suspension and maybe not the best brakes out there (i can still lift the rear tire in a emergency stop) but most the people i ride with still cant keep up with me on the mountain roads, And thats on a 16 year old bike with little over 74k miles. I absolutely love my Sv. I have replaced the mirrors to some bar end ones which look nicer to me. I also plan to use a tail conversion kit to remove the "Bikini" on the back of the bike. There is already a absolutely lovely spike that comes to a point at the tail of the bike and shouldn't have been covered with the mud flap. Overall I love riding this bike, and it sounds like a beast, love that Vtwin sounds.

I assume a lot of people are here to compare the bikes and that some are interested in buying one (although I watch plenty of vids about bikes I'm not interested in). So for those who are interested in the SV, here's a few things I have to say after 10,000 miles on the 2017 with ABS. First of all, it's a great bike, very peppy with the V twin. It handles great and you and really lean the hell out of it. I have some aftermarket luggage because I want to tour on it. As a touring bike, not amazing. The seat really sucks after like 3 hours. And having your knees up as high as they are starts to hurt too. All that said, I'm probably the only moron who wants to tour with it. As a city bike its great. Around NYC, I've had no problems with it. Engine is manageable at low speeds and it's easy to lanesplit as a result. But it also has enough get up and go to get the hell out of the way of something. Stops pretty well too. Only engaged the ABS once or twice and only on the back wheel. Passengers don't really like the back seat but I took someone to Philly on it and they managed. Maintainence is easy. Have done the oil a few times, radiator fluid (even though I probably didn't need to) and chain slack. TL;DR: Everything is cool except the seat. Edit years after posting this. Currently at 30k miles. I don't tour on it much anymore. Did ride it east coast to the four corners to Yellowstone and back tho.. I caught the track bug. Love it on the track but you will need rearsets. Looking into suspension, clip ons, and full exhaust too.

I have a 2019 SV650ABS and love it. It is nimble but also feels planted in turns. The other day I was accelerating relatively hard from around 55 mph and I noticed the bike fishtailing left and right several times. At first it seemed like a tank slapper, something I had never experienced before. However, it turned out to be some kind of oil slick on the road causing the rear wheel to lose traction. I later saw the culprit, a vintage Ferrari spraying, not dripping, some fuel/oil/water mixture from the exhaust. I am not a racer and had never experienced anything like it. I do remember not cutting the throttle abruptly and let the bike move. Remarkably, it straightened itself out, and I did not have to put my Tech-Air 5 vest to the test. I think that the bike’s stability was aided by its overall well sorted chassis and geometry. I am left terrified but also have gained some confidence in the rider friendliness of the SV650. I’ll keep riding and will pay even more attention to road conditions. I thought I’ll share this with the hope that someone may also learn from it and also consider the SV650 as a super fun bike that handles well even in tricky situations. I’ll post this on other sites as well and am curious what people think.

Still super happy with it. Rock solid reliability and as much fun as on the first day. I should add that the out the door price was a lot lower than the FZ-07 would have been at my dealer. Can’t go wrong with it.

@@bossHogOG Here, I'll make it, 'make sense' for you.... Predominately 'metal' construction = Suzuki SV650 = 'keeper' vibes (high build quality) Lots of 'plastic' in its construction = Yamaha FZ-07 = 'disposable' vibes (not so high build quality) Context is a thing, friend. I trust that my clarification, now, makes sense to you. Peace.

I always thought the SV650 looked fugly and cheap, especially back when the frame was silver, but really if pretty modern looking is all that matters, just save a few bucks and get a slightly used Ninja 650. There's nothing about these 2017 models that breaks new ground so no need to pay the new premium for them unless you just want new. Might be different if we weren't talking about budget bikes but we are.

You didn't mention the GEARBOXES! At all. What's going on guys? I don't find loud and clunky gearboxes enjoyable. Can you please tell me which bike has a smoother and quieter gearbox? Thanks.
@goldpilgrim
@goldpilgrim 8 жыл бұрын
My last bike was a 2000 SV650 I sold it at 40K miles. The gearbox was very clunky on a downshift when the oil is hot. Less so with thicker oils. I used Mobile 15W50 synthetic. I tried not to downshift; I would coast to the stop in 6th and then find the neutral within the last foot of motion. The upshifts were perfect and almost no clunk into first. I know SV has an oil cooler now. Did it improve the shifting?
@goldpilgrim
@goldpilgrim 8 жыл бұрын
2005 is a second gen SV with a different shifting mechanism plus an oil cooler! MC news gave that transmission an extra point (4.5). Gladius scored all 5 points. I wanted a Gladius bus it couldn't have a center stand. BTW, there is center stand for FZ07 from motech. You shoul've mentioned that too. I think I'll wait for the center stand and buy the SV. Each time I go coast to coast, I have to replace either a tire or a chain by myself. Your review is for people who "just ride"

+Ari Henning I ride a 2015 FZ07 with 2901 miles. My gearbox when shifting up clacks super loud and there is nothing wrong with it as far as I know. My 2005 DRZ400 would do the same thing.

I Use an AirHawk cushion. But most comfort comes from Not spending money on motels. The bike is light and you can camp in the woods. Knowing your bike, maintaining it and feeling in control gives you a sense of independence (and comfort)

Great video guys. I had a 2002 SV and I have to say that it wasn't the most powerful bike but it was by far the most fun and versatile I had owned at that time. I'm glad they brought it back but I've been looking into the FZ-07 and visually, I find it more appealing. I've always had a soft spot for the sound of twins. I think this video has really helped in the decision to make it my next bike.

v Prime If you love it then great, but its not a well built or designed bike, and nothing to do with being a princess.
