GeekXplained : Some numbers to cement some ideas we discussed in the First. Hope this helps. 1) The Exter looks taller than it feels: Height: 1631mm vs 1615 for Punch. But it doesn't feel taller than the Tata. Because, without roof rails the Exter's height is: a) 1598mm on 15” wheels b) 1585 for 14” wheels Sure, the Punch also has roof rails but they are much lower. 2) Sluggish engine Look at the max speeds in the first three gears: 1st - 48kmph, 2nd - 88kmph, 3rd - 132kmph. Yes an indicated 132kmph in 3rd gear! No imagine accelerating in a gear - which explains why the engine feels dull - because it will rev up slowly. 3) Highway Gearing Here are the engine rpms at 50kmph: 2nd - 3700rpm 3rd gear - 2400rpm (1300rpm lower) 4th gear - 1700rpm (1300rpm lower) 5th gear 50 1300rpm (400rpm lower) So, for a given speed the 5th gear doesn’t rev much lower than the 4th gear. Hence fuel efficiency won’t be dramatically better when cruising on the highway. Let me know what you think!

Driven Hyundai i20 Active for 2.75 lakh kms and exchanged it for Tiago NRG XZ in Nov 2022. TATA NRG is every bit comparable to i20 Active and than some more, saftey mileage and lower cost of ownership. In love with TATA now. 🤟

@gouravsoni6349
@gouravsoni6349 Жыл бұрын
I did extensive research and took multiple test rides with Punch Altroz and NRG from the Tata family. I did not like the overall feel of Punch. It was underpowered when compared to NRG. Also, the mileage figures of NRG are way superior to those of Punch thanks to its aerodynamic body compared to Punch's boxy shape. Punch is good for mileage only if you drive really slowly and under 80 kmph. I needed a car for major highway usage and some offroad too for reaching work sites. And at speeds of 100-110 at NH44, NRG gives me 18-20 kmpl, tank to tank; at speeds of 80-85, it gives 22-24 kmpl; and in Nagpur city, I get 14-15 kmpl. In Punch, we just get a bit more mm's in boot and cabin space, with a 5-star safety rating and mini Harrier looks. I do daily office travel on my TVS NTORQ scooter. Car is primarily for wife and family, so the features we get in top-end variants are very beneficial for a woman driver with a 2-year-old kid. A fully loaded NRG XZ made more sense to me than Punch's second variant at 8 lakh on the road. Also, there is more glass area in Tiago NRG compared to Punch or Altroz. I am 6 ft tall, so I have no problem driving any car, but my wife and other family members are 5ft 5 inches or below, so NRG's wide glass area and seats with height adjustment helps there. After 24000 km in the last 7 months and 4 services done, I am in love with the Tata Tiago NRG. No complaints with the car or TATA service.

People have to understand that a 5 star crash rated car isn’t gonna save them from all accidents, Even those cars would crumble if one drives rashly and ram into other vehicles. At the same time, there is not actually a driving discipline in our country, one can’t be sure that other drivers on the road will drive sanely. It’s good to have a car that performed well in crash test as that would give the feeling you got a pretty safe car under you. Kudos to Tata for making their cars safer.

This is such a half cooked argument. This implies that a 5 star is no better than a 3 star. Which is just not the case. There was recently a video where a boulder fell on a harrier and people walked out alive out of it. There was a case of an army truck driving over, yes, OVER an XUV 300 and the passengers were unharmed. A 5 star rated car will DEFINITELY keep you safer in MORE situations than a 3 star. If you're refuting this basic statement, then i don't even understand.

Finally someone spoke about the crash test obsession. Brave brave brave that's all I can say. It's frankly become annoying these days, any car by Hyundai, Kia, MSIL, however good it may be, there's this band of people (read Tata fanbois) hurling abuses at them 'it's unsafe, coffin car, tincan' and what not. I'm not saying it's bad to demand safer cars and higher NCAP ratings, but every conversation these days in the car world revolves around that itself like ugh. Why do we have to treat everything binary? Before no one spoke about safety and stars. Now all we do is talk about that. 0 or 1. And every Hyundai Kia car page has the same comments 'Tata, Mahindra, Tata, Mahindra'. Like fine they have good cars 5 stars great, but please stop saying that everywhere. And if we take Tata as an example, their NCAP rating is their only thing moving them forward I feel. Their showroom and sales experience is terrible. I've heard such horrid stories from friends regarding after sales, service etc. Not the best quality control either. So I feel we need to appreciate each car, each brand for its own and not push just one thing over and over again. And if Hyundai's new gen cars - like this Exter here - do manage a good NCAP rating - it's gonna be knockout punch for sure (pun intended) Sorry for the rant Love your content as always ♥️♥️
@motorinc
@motorinc Жыл бұрын
Thanks Harsh. No one's arguing that a car that performs better in a crash test is not a better thing to be in. But people who pound the so-many-stars argument often have not taken the time to understand the testing methodology at all. To us, if safety is that crucial a conversation (it is), then we all should be paying a lot more attention not just to _how_ the ratings were achieved, and _who_ did the test, but also to ourselves. Driver error sits at the top of the accident cause factors in almost all countries. The passive safety nets is deployed _because_ the driver made an error! So we're saying preventing jaundice isn't a big deal, but let's have the best possible ratings for jaundice medicines 😊

Well, Kartikeya completely destroyed that 'Desh ka loha' bs and rightly so. If people start driving like maniacs thinking that the 'high tensile steel' will protect them then they are danger to not just themselves but everyone else on road. People die even in a Mercedez when they don't wear seat belts. So drive sensible and wear seat-belts.

Highly VFM Vehicle.. Top notch features, space, quality, fit and finish for a muscular hatchback 😅 Somehow I get a baby defender vibes from the front.. Even the safety suit looks promising.. The engine refinement is also unbeatable when compared to Punch.. Ride and handling is just fine.. Paired with Hyundai's superb network, service and reliability, this vehicle will surely give a tough fight to the Punch.. The pricing is just the cherry on the cake ❤ However, the only thing which isn't upto my taste is borrowing the interiors from Nios and Aura, they just look too cheap and quirky.. A different dashboard layout could do the job... Overall, a serious option for my family under 10 lakh 😊

I don’t agree with what they say about safety ratings. Those ratings get stringent every day. The scores are backed by data. Your driving skills are not the only factor that will keep you safe, someone colliding with you when you’ve stopped on the road is not under your control. And disregarding the safety ratings does not help the scenario in a long run when there are so many accidents in the country which could have avoided fatalities if cars were built better. So I don’t agree with them about what they say about safety in this video.
@motorinc
@motorinc Жыл бұрын
We didn't ask you to disregard them, Rohit. We said that if you're going to get so obsessed about them, do make the effort to understand them. All norms (emissions, noise, safety etc) get stricter with time, this is as predictable as the rise in prices. The Indian government does test _all_ cars, and the big flaw is that they've failed to publish the results of those tests so far. But Bharat NCAP is coming soon and they'll fix that. As to driving skills. They're a HUGE factor. You should need crash test ratings as a backup system that protects you when everything else fails. There are many reasons why India has so many accidents, driver error is usually at the top of those reasons, no matter which country you look at. This is why focussing on crash test ratings is good but improving enforcement of rules, driver licensing and education is FAR more crucial and in most ways, a far more important and meaningful conversation. And of course, you don't have to agree with us. It's not mandatory at MotorInc that our voice and yours matches exactly. As long we're having a conversation, things will improve for everyone.

Driving speeds always being a safe 70-90 kms/hr. Exter promises to be an excellent car for ingress/ egress for aging stiffening bodies. And the price , makes it a winner . EXTER will be according to me Hyundai's biggest success story as they laugh all the way to the bank.

#MotorInc nice video well explained 👍 Hyundai Exter is Smart Micro SUV good to see some compitition for Punch 🙂 & very smart on Hyundai's part to keep the insides same as NIOS, cut cost in the right way and bring economy of scale to offer value pricing.. 😉 Now your Move Maruti Suzuki...🤔 Time to Say Sayonara to Ignis...👋 I wish Maruti Suzuki reincarnates Zen, as Swift based Micro SUV for Nexa, with outer design something similar to Punch (with DRL & Headlight placement like Grand Vitara) but on the inside its purely Swift, with 185/188 mm ground clearance, rear ac vents & rear armrest (from Dzire), front arm rest (like 2023 Punch), Sunroof (ZXI & ZXI+), try 4⭐ safety (which I doubt, but still 🤞), with Swift like performance and driving dynamics, in the next 2/3 years. I think we fuss over the star rating exactly because we know there are indisciplined drivers on the road. Us being disciplined is only half the story. The star rating is what gives you some semblance of confidence for the remaining half of the story. So this disdain for star rating conversation was quite disappointing. I had a close call last week due to someone coming head on in a one way when both of us were around 60 kmph. I could swerve out and avoid the exact 50 percent overlap we see in crash tests. What if i couldn't despite my best efforts? My wife was buckled in and my 17 month old was buckled in his car seat. Star rating conversation is not over rated. Not a Tata or Mahindra owner but a Honda Brio owner thinking of his next car.

Absolutely. But do most of the people discussing those stars know what the numbers and facts actually mean? 99% are surprised to know what _all_ Indian cars do pass a 55kmph test anyway to be approved for sale. Bharat NCAP should fix the data gap in result reporting shortly
@motorinc

Shumi's making a very simple point. If you are going to take safety ratings seriously, then learn what they mean. Star ratings are the most digested, easy for marketing form of understanding the crash test. Each continent offers a different logic for the stars. All of this slips under the radar when it comes to discussing star ratings. So first, people can read the stars, but not what that means for you as a driver in the real world. Second. If you're interested, you should read the 2021 Accident report MoRTH published. Fatality rates are falling, total incidents are going up. As in we're buying more cars and having more crashes, but crashes as a percentage of cars bought is falling. And you'll see why we think skills are more important than just crash test ratings. Here's 4 data points: 1. 70% of accidents happens on straight roads 2. 50%+ are in open areas (not in city etc) 3. 50% of the drivers killed were not wearing seat belts 4. 67% of crashes happened on clear, sunny days. 5. 70% of the time, the cause was listed as overspending. Sounds like a skill issue, no?

Just because they could not compete with Suzuki on Engine quality and Hyundai on Interior quality, are they pushing for safety as the only usp? The Punch's AMT is bad and so is its engine and Panel gaps are also inconsistent IMO

All ICE will go in the next 10 years. And BS7 will speed up that process. Hybrids might have a chance still. As for NCAP - it is not a real tool until all cars are being tested by them. Only then will it actually help. It has helped highlight the strength of Tata’s cars. The other factors that you mentioned aren’t up to the mark though.

Now the Verna has 5 star, it is released today itself. Irony is I saw an unfortunate accident today of the Verna today itself, car was crushed. Not even sure the driver survived or not, they took to hospital and all. All air cushions were out. And what people said was bad driving, he slammed the car into a standing truck at like 110. So what I means 5 star may be a peace of mind, if and only if you drive safe. I would pray the guy survives and thankfully he was alone in the vehicle.

There's a fundamental misunderstanding with the "high-strength steel" question I think. The point that was being made was, "why is Hyundai focusing on 6 airbags and a host of electronic safety nets, when the basic structure of the car is still probably not the safest to boot with?" Granted that these devices are absolutely necessary and contribute to safety to a great extent, but Hyundai is basically gaming the regulations by doing the bare minimum to get a 3 star car, while hoping consumers wouldn't notice that the chassis is not up to the standards provided by other manufacturers. If they can do it, why not Hyundai? Also, if every car on our roads is being crash tested at 55, then where's the data? Without the data we can't really applaud the government or the manufacturers. If the data exists, share it. Why hide it? Our way of demanding better is to ask these questions to you, because you are our voice. If you discount the question with sarcasm, you're just diluting our say in the matter. Living in fear is no way of living, agreed - but it's a genuine question if trading a few features for better safety is a risk worth taking. To sum it up, there's only so much you can do to upgrade yourself and be as cautious, because even if you trust yourself, your driver, your car - do you trust a drunken 25 year old with a BMW doing 150 at 4 in the morning? Nothing but love and respect for both of you and the team. Growing up with your content. Just the difficult conversations that we need to have.

I recently took a test drive of Hyundai exter and then there are couple of things that I would like to mention. Firstly I don't know how it's suspension is tuned but it kept bumping so hard on the plastic or rubber speed breaker whichever those even on lower speeds that the folks in the back seat literally crashed in the seat. So I have to literally go 5 km an hour on every speed breaker, which is kind of not acceptable for me. Secondly when we say it's a premium interior I did not feel anything premium at all. As you guys already mentioned it is an i10 interior just placed in a bigger feeling car. That makes the interior feel misplaced and it is so basic that and I did not get any feel of premiumness.

33:00 - Very VERY poor take on crash test ratings. Somehow it seems like you guys completely lost objectivity when it comes to crash test ratings. You are literally saying that crash tests should be taken subjectively, not objectively. Literal "lab tests" in your own words might I add. Nobody, I repeat NOBODY becomes a rash drivers because their car is 5 star rated. Nobody ASSUMES that a 5 star rated car will take them through heaven and hell. How do I know this? I have talked to SEVERAL people who have bought such cars, and I know their perspective. (2 colleagues own a XUV300, 3-4 XUV700, a couple of Nexons, and so on. I personally have a 5 starrer, and made my dad get a 5 starrer) They just want safer cars EXPLICITLY because we live and drive on absolute lawless roads. Next flaw in your argument that just frontal offset test isn't everything: If you go through the reports, all our current 5 star cars were ALSO put through the side impact test, the pedestrian safety test as well. I'm surprised you guys missed this detail entirely. The crash tests performed by our regulatory authorities - where are the test results? Where is the transparency? By that logic even ISI mark helmets were certified. But the truth was actually that the ISI test was done by the manufacturer themselves, in their own factories. BIS even said that their engineers had not been called to these facilities. Why would I have any faith in these regulations, especially since several cars passed by regulations here end up scoring straight zeroes in international standard tests? High strength steel: That was such a weak statement by Shumi. Borderline derogatory. You're saying HSS doesn't make a difference in safety? It's a clear pattern that cars with HSS at strategic spots, and in higher percentage, fare better in crash tests, as well as real world crashes. Also that comparison to carbon fibre in F1: You guys DO know that F1 car bodies are DESIGNED to absorb ALL the force of the impact and disintegrate? So those shells are literally designed to break apart completely. Cars aren't and can't be designed that way. @shumi - would you buy a helmet that isn't ECE/Snell/Sharp rated? I believe that Arai RX7V you use is ECE certified? Would you feel just as safe using a basic Steelbird/Vega? Would you daily drive a roadside 1000rs helmet because lab test results don't really matter?

The argument given for 6 airbags and Crash rating not making any sense is just illogical in the real world practicality. I think Shubh just overlooked the fact that accidents happen due to other idiotic drivers on the road as well. That is where the built quality and airbags become more critical. Just denying the advantages of these things shows the lack of practical knowledge from the content creators. Adas and emergency braking would have never been developed and used in cars, if everything was about just the driver. I'm just surprised to see such naive comments being made on this platform about safety standards.

Excellent video which went from the most honest and informative first impressions to really set things straight about the safety bandwagon while thanking Vikas and Gagan that I have a great respect for. Hilarious too. I could feel the angst about the GNCAP ratings and I share the same. Brilliant closing line Shumi and the ones before that 👍 FYI, with the latest GNCAP rules you cannot get more than 2 stars unless you sponsor the pole, pedestrian and ESP tests. Not a very fair/unbiased position as it isn't mandatory in India so manufacturers who don't participate "voluntarily" cannot get more than 2 stars. Without even going into their fundings, we can, with 5-star safety, assume that they're not the holy-grail they project themselves to be. Not to worry, soon BNVSAP or its adaptation will come and every car can see the stars and some of us, the light of the day. Coming back to the Exter, I have to commend Hyundai's design and ambience. That uplifting feeling! Front design is impressive, rear seems a bit disconnected from the front in terms of design but probably they've saved it for the facelift. But every time a new Hyundai is launched, the competition starts looking old immediately. They've been doing it since the Santro and getting better, every time. +1 for the Ioniq 1.5.

@shantanu_d
@shantanu_d Жыл бұрын
@@motorinc - BNVSAP ratings won't solve the problem of perception but would settle the furore for good. Initially I expect a lot of noise when ratings start coming as a lot of us, without understanding the process(like they presently do) will start calling the ratings as a diluted/sarkari version and hold GNCAP on a higher pedestal. Because most of the latest gen Marutis will get good ratings which won't go down well with some. But as those 4/5 star stickers become visible on every car in the showrooms, it will educate some but more importantly shift the focus away from this topic. If it's visible everywhere, it's not that important, just like we don't have almost any public discussion over ABS which would've saved countless lives on our roads. - The Santa Fe, there's a reason Hyundai havn't shown the rear in any of the adverts :D Interesting? Yes. Elegant? No. I think its more for the western market which they're trying to break. Unless they pull-off something like a room at the back(the only explanation for that rear) they won't be able to break the glass ceiling. The previous versions haven't been able to do much in the private car space they're eyeing (I don't have data to back this but this is what I feel). If attention is what they're after, there's an Ioniq way to do things or even the Konical way.

This is my take on safety: This mandatory 55kmph crash test is like ISI certified helmet. But motorcyclists prefer ECE, Snell etc certified options even though they are not mandatory in India. Why? Just because it will give more assurance and protection in case of crash. Does it mean who wear these don't know how to ride bike well? No. Similarly for 4 wheelers, buyers expect some third party to certify it's safety. I understand that driving sense should be there and one should drive properly. But safe car does add extra layer of protection in case of crash. Loss of a loved ones is not a good thing. ❤ Anyway, the full video is damn good regarding everypoint. Talking things so naturally. Shumi is even good on mocking car things & terminologies!

Being the leading auto journalist you guys should look into the factor that the same car (Creta) in other markets is heavier by almost 20-30%. Does Hyundai give that block of high strength steel to EU customers to put wherever they want to put? I love you guys, this conversation was not logical at all. If are offering same product in different countries but with mischievous weight reduction for India, something is not right. OR India is getting the safest version of these vehicles and EU+ other markets are yet to get these upgraded safest versions of these cars. Having a safe structure will not save you in big accidents but it increases your chance of survival. OR you guys are more knowledgeable than EURO NCAP ?

Hey Akash, Thanks so much for having a chat about this. It's an important conversation for each one of us. Would really appreciate it if you could share the article or report where the Creta weight aspect is mentioned. Appreciate it!

So True, the Exter is made for family of four, with city and highway commutes. Also I did find its AMT working better than on Tata Punch or Maruti Suzuki Ignis. Hope they can get a good score in crash test.

A big kidney... ROFLMAO. And to think I nearly lynched Chris Bangle for his boot lids and flame surfacing many years ago at the Tokyo Motor Show. He was a saint in comparison to whatever heretic does these kidneys 🤦🏻

The suv question was settled decades ago. Body on frame, Atleast rwd if not 4x4 and atleast 2 locking diffs Dont got any 1 of those things, it's not an suv. Why do poor people wanna keep coping. They're hatches on skirts, which have their place in this country.

Hello MJ! Two locking diffs? For an SUV? or off-roader?
