An elderly mechanic that I used to work with back in the late 1980's showed me a pretty cool way to preserve carburetor gaskets. Give them a generous application of packing grease on both sides, and let it sit overnight. The next day, wipe it as clean as you can get it WITHOUT using any kind of cleaner on it. Doing this will allow you to use, and reuse the gasket over and over and over many times. That guy sure was a walking wealth of information, and he had an incredible sense of humor.

Those mid-eighties F 600 series trucks were the most reliable made back then and it wasnt even close between the detroit big 3. They were cheap in fleet sales and companies like the one l worked for just abused them because you could. We were getting 200-300k out of them delivering flooring, tile and granite counter tops all over the south east US to Florida out of Tx. They were gas hogs but dependable.
