This is a Motormouth couple car review of the 2023 Mazda MX5 or Miata roadster convertible.
The MX-5 is such a special convertible, not only is it an affordable option but it’s
fun to drive especially with the manual transmission. I learned to drive manual on an MX-5 so this car holds a special place in my heart. It’s an absolute joy to drive.
This Mazda has a 2L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission, 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, RWD only.
In Canada, the automatic is an option on trims one up from the base model but in the US it is only available on the top Grand Touring trim.
The MX-5 is a two-passenger sports car that has a classic and sporty exterior design. Whether you decide on the soft top or hard top, it’s one of those cars you park and look back at to admire, it has beautiful lines. It comes standard with LED headlights, LED rear combination lights, 17” wheels in Canada, 16” in the US, available 17” and you get a tire repair kit.
The interior is simplistic with a 7” touchscreen and wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It comes standard with black cloth upholstery with black stitching, available black cloth with grey stitching, black leather on the top trim and optional terracotta or white Nappa leather for $400 CAD/$300 USD. White Nappa is not available in the US.
One up from the base model adds the 12-speaker Bose sound system and heated front seats. The top trim has navigation and wireless Apple Carplay. In the US, the Club trim one up from the base model gets wireless Apple Carplay.
In Canada, the GS trim is $33,300 CAD, GS-P $37,300 CAD, GT $40,400 CAD. In the US, the Sport model is $28,050 USD, Club $31,550 USD and Grand Touring $33,050 USD.
For fuel economy, the 6-speed manual gets 9L/100 km, 26 MPG city and 7L/100 km, 34 MPG highway. 6-speed automatic 9L/100 km, 26 MPG city and 6.6L/100 km, 35 MPG highway.

As an mx5 nd rf owner i can honestly say that its great fun to drive and handles fine. Mx5 were only ever meant to be fun and mine delivers this by the bucket load. As for what i look like at the traffic lights well who cares im happy. Its not always about how quick a car is but how you feel driving it.

Good to see Andrea now love the manual transmission. Great review on the car ! Living in Northern Illinois my 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with the Brembo / BBS package is my daily car. I keep the out of season tires stacked up on a dolley in the garage. Thru some of the coldest / snowy / ice filled days I've ever driven my Miata was absolutely brilliant as long as the snow was under 7 inches. I left the car stock height & put in Weather Tech mats. The soft top takes extra care & don't park under ANY trees in ANY season to keep the roof drains free of debris so the interior doesn't flood. Never had a problem with flooding my interior. Of course in monsoon rains & extreme heat this car is also very good. Under rated foul weather car ! Never a garage queen the car wants to be driven.

As a 6’1 owner of the 2021 ND2 RF (a retractable hardtop). It is “practical” enough for household grocery shopping and it is comfortable (enough) at my height. One caveat. Please no hard lefts for taller folks with the hardtop up. You could brain yourself. Ask me how I know. One last thing. I highly recommend driving it in the snow around your house before they salt the ground. It’ is the the most fun I have ever had on 4 wheels.

We saw a Honda S2000 two seater in Calgary when we came out of a grocery store yesterday. I told my wife that we could have bought the S2000 back in 2007. My cousin had a Miata when he first retired. He enjoyed it a lot. He had stored it in a quonset on his farm over the winter. The mice got into it. Fortunately the mice had NOT chewed any wires. Thank you for your car review. 😊

Just drove home my first Mazda MX-5 2023 a few days ago. It's the same Club with Brembo package and metallic red color reviewed in this video. Agree 100% with Andrea and Zack. Awsome styling! Engaging and exhilarating to drive for every trip, even to drive to the store. The cockpit is perfect and closely contoured for my size (5 ft 9 in, 175 lbs). Surprised the taller Zack (6 ft) is comfy. When I transition from my SUV to the MX-5, there is a world of difference in the ground clearance--I feel as though I am sitting on the road. I am not looking forward to getting in/out of this car if I get back or knee issues. Surprisingly quiet interior with top down compared to previous convertibles I have had. The rapid deployment of the convertible top allows for an easy stop light open/close. The monitor display is not particularly bright and is difficult to read in the sunlight. But ahhh, the sunlight!! I have left the top down for the first week.

I drove my Miatas 365 days a year in the Mass snow belt. I threw snows on and kept the top down in any weather, including blizzards and light rain. The Miata handles snow like a champ - it communicates with you so clearly that you can easily handle snow covered hills and curvy roads (with snow tires). That is, as long as it doesn't get too deep (6+ inches) on the road itself.

Starting in 1970: Mustang Mach1, Corvette, Supra, 300ZX and 4 (yes 4) different S2000s. At 71 this will probably be my last sports car purchase. You both are correct, the Miata is the best bang for the buck in the sports car segment, nothing else comes close.

I live in the Cascade Mountains just south of Canada where get a lot of snow because of our elevation. I have had one of each of the four version. My current MX-5 is a 2016. My job makes me drive a lot. I put snow tires on and go all winter. It’s similar to a front wheel drive car with snow tires. It bottoms out at around 8-9 inches. I have never not made it home at night, since 1989. Oh, I average around 40mpg on the highway going 70-75 and around 35 combined. It is a great road car. It’s as comfortable as our Lexus RX although my wife thinks it’s to noisy. The driving experience still puts a smile on my face. People do talk to you about the car, especially after you wax it. My favorite was a group of young boys who flagged me down and had a million questions.

Winter driving a Miata/MX5 in southwest B.C.: I still vividly remember the day when i took delivery of my brand new but completely stock(i skipped the optional hardtop) Miata NA in Jan 1990(who in his/her right mind would buy a convertible in the middle of a Canadian winter?...my younger self must be nuts...) from Mazda New Westminster. It was a typical freezing rainy Vancouver day and I was a newbie manual transmission driver. I didn't know what to expect as it was my 1st ever purchase of a Mazda. Despite all these circumstances, my little roadster worked beautifully on 1st impression: 1) Superb cabin heating performance. Later I learnt that its HVAC system was actually 99% identical to the 323's - i.e. a system originally designed for a cabin more than twice the size of a Miata's. This was probably why sufficient heating inside my Miata in cold winter morning start-ups never took long even though softtop cars inherently lose heat faster than metal top ones. 2) Very good quality rubber sealings at where the upper windshield frame meet the softtop fabric and especially around the side windows....not a drop of water could be found inside even near the gap areas. 3) Despite my jerky shifts at lower gears due to my still clumsy hand/foot coordination, those summer tires(All season tires as standard was still uncommon) never lost traction not just in the puddles of rain but also in the hilly streets of New Westminster(My Mazda dealer was located in the middle of a moderately uphill street). I later learnt that those stock tires(i believe they were Bridgestones) were exclusively designed for Miata with extra emphasis on traction rather than high cornering limit. That Miata shifter for a manual newbie like myself was a godsend. It just shortened my learning curve like crazy. 1 stern warning for stick shift learners though: Unless u don't plan on owning any other cars with a manual transmission forever, do not buy any Miata to learn with.....because anything else with a manual transmission regardless of price range will be a disappointment in shift qualities after your Miata ownership and Mazda has maintained that leadership for 34yrs even upto today's ND. By the time Vancouver started snowing a few wks later, i hv swapped to winter tires on my Miata. Frankly, this was when i realized that my little roadster was actually always warm & cozy inside while the excellent 50:50 balance+low C.G. of the chassis actually offer more grip on snow than expected...even to the point of being superior than many other normal 2WD cars. The only thing that could stop my Miata was deeper snow(by Vancouver standard, not Toronto/Montreal standard) due to its low ground clearance. But then again, Miata ground clearance was actually not much lower than say a Corolla, Civic or Golf. Until i sold it in late summer 93, Miata was my only car so I used it almost daily across 4 winters including 2~3 times for ski resorts around Vancouver. May be the timing of my Miata purchase was a blessing in disguise - I got to live with it thru the worst possible weather for a convertible literally from its day1. If i took delivery in summer instead, i bet i would have been 'intoxicated' by the new car scent and lowered the top in the warm weather basking in the sun as soon as i drove it off the dealer's lot and would hv never bothered to check how robust it is designed/bulit for me to survive winters. At least for Miata NA, I can attest that Miata can work as your only car in winter for I guess locations where lowest temp is around -10C with relatively mild snowfalls like Vancouver. I have been living in Toronto for 5yrs now and my ride is a CX5 AWD(Proof that i'm now older & wiser but still..Mazda) and i hv never seen a Miata on the roads here in winter.....i

Felix , forgot the low CG. Daily drive my 2016 Club soft top in Northern Illinois. Extreme sub zero temperatures / snow up to 7 inches / ice - winter tires make driving in these conditions fun. So 6 winters with this car so far its been brilliant. I'm an older guy but still change out & rotate the wheels / tires each season ( winter tires / summer performance tires ). If there is more than 7 inches of snow I'll wait for the snow plows.

I have a 2016 ND with over 130K miles. Reliability has been excellent, besides normal maintenance, I had to replace a driver's side rear wheel bearing that was noisy. Fuel economy is 37mpg local and 42mpg highway. One of the key changes from the NC to ND was a move from hydraulic to electric power steering. Hydraulic PS has considerably more feel but as the car ages, electric PS has zero maintenance issues. Rumor has it that in 2026 it will be some form of mild hybrid based on a 48V system. If that turns out to be the case, I will snag a 2025, as I'm a big fan of keeping the car as basic as possible. The Sport is the best value of the bunch. When you get to the Grand Touring or the RF, they get a little hard to justify. In 2018, I was in Montana and rented an Eco-Boost Mustang, which was similar in price to a top top-spec Miata. Except for fuel economy, the Mustang was a better value and it had four seats.

I owned a '94 NA manual that was a lease return. Had the removable hardtop, which made it a solid 3 season car. I parked it in the winter. At 6'2", I found it a little cramped. It was one of the most fun cars to drive, only beaten by a '94 NSX I had for an afternoon. A relative owned an automatic NC that fit me a bit better. I think If I were to get another one it would be an NC PRHT with an automatic. I'm tired of shifting, as is my partner. But if the right deal popped up for an NC PRHT with a manual, I'd consider it.

After I moved to Toronto, I test-drove this car during winter, and I decided not to get it, not because of the snow, it's just too low that every other car on the road would splash salty slushy onto the windscreen. I ended up getting the Mini Cooper Convertible (manual of cause).

I’m glad Mazda has not changed their award winning formula with the Miata. It is a near perfect car, especially with the pricing. It is a hard car to sell to someone who hasn’t experienced one (small/little engine/small trunk/‘hairdressers’ image). Especially… when they are also cross-shopping it against the more masculine, V6/8, 4-passenger American icon… the Ford Mustang. But… for those who are ‘in the know’… it is, my friend, one seriously overlooked peach! Thanks for the also near perfect video. Cheers.

Live in Edmonton and we drove our Miata in the winter. We put on winter wheels and tires. We drove it in all conditions. As for the inline 6, Mazda's earnings reports had mentioned the inline 6 for years before it came to market (so no surprise here). It was to be in the Mazda 6 and originally it was going to be shared with Lexus (I have not read an update on whether that is still going to happen).

Mazda should make it an option in the CX 9 / CX 5 to actually be able to tow something instead of the turbo 2.5 L 4 cylinder.

Yeah, they are not made for tall people, unfortunately. I had an NA for a few years but it was too cramped. My last roadster was a 2005 Z4 3.0 manual. Much roomier and more powerful, but then you deal with all the BMW reliability issues. I drive an S-Class now, much more comfortable, lol, and use a Fit for city errands, which is fun, just not as fun as a Miata. The Fit is way more practical though.

I owned a 2020 MX-5 GT soft top for a couple years and I absolutely loved it. Stupidly, I sold it last year (for a profit) because I wasn't driving it much due to my heavy work schedule and I have regretted it ever since. According to leaks from Japanese media, the next gen NE Miata is coming in about 3 years or so and it will be a mile hybrid (not fully electric). They also announced a current gen refresh for next year that will likely bring a lite update to the styling and Mazda's new infotainment system. Given these tidbits, I am planning to purchase another ND toward the end of its run, since it will be the last of its kind.

It was at the 2019 Kansas City Auto Show that I sat in an MX-5 Miata. I'm only a hair over six feet tall and thought the Jaws of Life might be needed to get me out of the car. I ended up crawling out on my hands and knees which made for a fun photo. I've known several people - both men and women - who have owned Miatas. They have one thing in common - they're short. Mazda would sell a lot more Miatas if everything about them was 5 to 8% larger and the tech was updated to be competitive.

You guys got me interested in checking out a Mazda MX-5 Miata. I definitely gotta learn how to drive a stick first. I seen the guys on Everyday Driver drive a Toyota 86 on snow tires in good amounts of snow. It can be done if some wants to drive these types of vehicles in the snow. Maybe in a pinch,definitely wanna keep an AWD for that snow or front wheel.

Remember, the MX-5 was designed for humans of up to average size, plus a bit more. The average male in 2022 was 5'8"; that's six inches shorter than you! So while I feel your pain, hey, it's like short guys who wanna play basketball: sometimes life's unfair.

I remember learning to drive a stick shift! It was my first car, a 1979 Datsun 280 ZX. My dad was so patient. I would sweat having to go uphill and would avoid whenever possible 😂 if I was on an incline, and a car got too close behind me, my heart would beat so fast out of fear that my car would roll back and hit them.😅

I was going to say exactly. One of the few nits and a real puzzlement especially for their signature car: color selection has been very limited through the years...with a good BRG (in my opinion, non metallic the better...and even a nice lighter medium green) a glaring omission except for very occasional anniversary/commemorative types. Would be especially nice with a tan top and saddle interior. And - I would make it regular production!

The Mazda ND MX-5 has a performance clutch with a dual mass flywheel. It is hard to master even for a seasoned standard transmission operator. Great job Andrea! I have been driving manual transmission cars for over 50 years and I struggled with the clutch for a few days after I bought my 2023 MX-5.

There must be something wrong with your clutch. It’s nothing special and super easy to operate smoothly.
@bobdadruma
@bobdadruma Жыл бұрын
@@giusepperocchi2979 The clutch pedal in an MX-5 requires more pressure to depress than the clutch pedal in lets say a Subaru Outback. The Mazda clutch is also designed to grip sharply and not slip very much. That makes it easier to buck or stall the engine. When I install O.E. clutch kits in a Subaru the pedal pressure is about half of the what the Mazda is. The Subaru clutch also slips more when the pedal is lifted. It is designed to be easier to operate. Toyota clutches have a hydraulic damper to slow the release of the clutch pedal to aid the driver from bucking or stalling the engine. I install numerous clutch kits in many different types of cars every year.

These two have no clue what they r talking about. I just bought an mx 5 automatic. no regrets, no LSD even (base GS model). I am from montreal and driven it in 2 snow storms (20cm) with a great set of winter tires. the miata rides 0.2 cm higher than my impreza. it handles great and if u r a car guy that loves driving, drive the crap out of it even in the winter. this car handle great in the winter with all the electronics it has. I have had many manual vehicles before this one, even a couple of motorcycles. The auto is a joy to drive especially when battling traffic everyday, no worries about shifting. I do my grocerys in it, maybe not costco, depends what i am buying. if u want it, go buy it and enjoy it everyday. This car is like no other, 99.0% of people don t take it to the track.
