The current generation #MazdaMX5 Miata has been around for 7 years but Mazda has managed to keep the #MazdaMiata fresh over the years. For 2022, the #MX5Miata gets some tweaks in the form of updated suspension tuning and changes to the availability of the automatic transmission, which #Mazda has limited as an option to only the GT trim. It still uses a high-revving 2.0L N/A 4-cylinder engine that revs to 7,500 RPM paired up with a lively 6-speed MT. While an electrified #Miata is on the table for the next generation, this is one of the purest new sports car that money can buy today.

Where has the time gone?! Our host Sofyan actually bought one of the original ND Miata's exactly 7 years ago and it's still one of the few cars that he owned which he misses everyday. Luckily, Mazda has managed to keep this car fresh and still desirable after all these years. We're looking forward to the next-generation model but hopefully Mazda preserves some of that raw feeling you get from this generation when/if they decide to go electrified for the next model.

I absolutely love the MX5. This spec with the brembo package and in their soul red color is sex on wheels. The only thing about the MX5 I don't like is that it has gotten very expensive. The club trim with the BBS/Brembo package is 37k unfortunately. Also the used market nowadays does not favor this car either. I think in 2022 this is a problem considering the GR86 is significantly less money. Even though not a convertible I think the GR86 handles better and probably give you more bang for your buck handling wise. The used alternative would be a first generation Z4 which can be had between 10k-20k for a 3.0i or 3.0si model. Thanks for the review and keep up the great work!

Lovely review, I love my nd too!! But looking at what a horrible prospect the mx30 is I don’t get why mazda doesn’t pull an i3->mini electric and just put that drivetrain in the mx5 reversed.

I owned a 2016 Mx 5 and traded it in 3 years ago. I really missed it. Yesterday, I got an email from a local Mazda dealer about the Mazda 3, but decided to check the inventory for the MX 5 at all the local Mazda dealers which I have done for the last couple of years hoping I would see one that was too good to pass up. Today, the dealer I went to had two brand new white 2022 Mx 5 GTs with good discounts and only about 5 miles on them. I took one for a test drive and loved it. They gave me such a great deal on my trade...over 7 grand more than I expected and threw in some great options at no additional charge. I literally jumped out of my seat to sign the offer sheet. I'm glad to say I'm now the owner of a new 2022 MX 5!!

Bob Moore Mazda in Oklahoma City. As an update to this story...I owned that 2022 Mx-5 for less than 3 months before being involved in an accident that totalled the car. The MX-5 had less than 800 miles on it. I was uninjured except for a very sore arm, shoulder and bruised temple. After settling with the insurance company, I was able to locate and buy a similar new 2022 Mx-5 about 100 miles away for around $2500 less than I paid for the original. I'm just as pleased with it as I was with the other...especially since I've consistently averaged over 42 mpg in the city and almost 48 mpg on the 100 mile trip back from when I bought it.

Great review, although don’t dismiss the automatic too quickly. I just bought a ’23, and while I understand all about how the manual suites this car, while test-driving the auto, I was completely & utterly blown away by how good it was. When in “Drive” you can pop the shift lever a titch over to the left, taking it out of full auto mode into a manual control, and then simply blip the lever forward & backward (with a tiny throw) to shift up & down. The paddle shifters are also there as another shifting option too! It was so shockingly good that I bought it over the manual. Much more relaxing during those times when you want to just cruise and enjoy your coffee, or when dealing with city traffic. Have you tried one?

Sofyan your MX-5 reviews really hit the spot ! As a daily driver of a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with the BBS / Brembo package my love for this car has grown. If anybody thinks the 181 hp ND2 engine is a great upgrade .... no its the lower end of the flat torque curve where this engine does shine for a 4 cylinder engine. I put winter tires on when the snow / ice starts to fly & its still a blast to drive in the cold weather. I look forward to each drive with this car as the fun factor is very high. I'm calling it the Best Car I've ever owned in 50 years of driving manual transmission cars & never would I have thought to consider a convertible Miata but Engineering Explained did a 2016 MX-5 video review which completely changed my thought. Also Savage Geese review of the 2016 MX-5 was confirmation on this car. TY Sofyan !

@@horatiotimewaster5755 I test drove a 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder Abarth with Brembo brakes & found the clutch pedal to be very heavy in traffic. That shifter felt very finicky in the Abarth missing shifts from a stop thinking I was in 1st but instead in 3rd. Turbo lag was not fun. The next day is when I went to the Mazda dealer to test drive a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top. Basically the same car in the same color. The clutch pedal was super light & throttle response was instant. In turns it also felt more athletic. It was a magical feeling driving in that MX-5. The dealer even extended my test drive ( it was 15 minutes past closing on a Saturday ) thru the weekend asking me to come back Monday after work to make a decision. I drove that car 240 miles in a little more than a day. My trade in car stayed in their dealer lot. Monday I was there after work with my checkbook ! 6.5 years later I still think it was one of my best decisions. So my experience in back to back test drives !

I bought my third., because of your blue ND demo in '19. I love it and my pr.c ior '16 and loved my '08. You missed my three negatives. 1. The nav and phone system are totally ridiculous. I resort to my phone. The voice control never works, and the steps to find anyplace is forever. I use my google and let the voice come thru my speakers. 2. Seatbelt dretractors are so sucky, the buckle catches in the door , scratches and dents.3. The exhaust note....Mazda isnt listening to us loyal buyers!! And really the front end looks great...with a Carbon Miata grille and Lamps! Tell Mazda to add another 19 hp, and those improvements and their car will out-incredible it's current incredibilousness....😎🤣

The BBR package is a hell of a deal. Sourcing those parts individually would cost you quite a bit more. You clearly prefer the bells and whistles of the GT, but if you’re a weekend warrior that sees casual track time, that BBR package is the way to go. The seats alone are better than anything on offer from Mazda’s cloth or leather options. I would love auto rev matching though. The throttle response on the blips is immediate which makes rev matching a joy but it is a nice feature when it can be toggled on and off.

I bought a Miata back in 2007 or 2008 (my first convertible). I loved that car and the very first thing I noticed were the smells with the top down. Even more so than my motorcycle (face shield), the smells were great riding by wildflowers, fresh cut lawn or hell even a cow pasture. There is nothing like a convertible as a second car, almost the feel of a motorcycle but with a wee bit more safety and creature comforts. I miss that car, but I have just a bit more room in the '14 370z convertible but the Z does not convey the ethereal experience of the Miata . I have never had any problems from either car so both are/were reliable. The Z does not have the connected driver to car experience that the Miata did, however ingress and egress is a bit easier as I have aged. The motorcycles are gone because of Tahoes which the owners refuse use bluetooth or maybe I have just aged out.

I've been resisting making comments on the ND. I bought an ND3 GT and I have been driving it for three months and it has literally transformed the way I drive. It is a weapon in the canyons, fast, smooth and predictable at the limit, it is truly outstanding. I occasionally commute with it and it's hard not to get judgemental with people commuting by themselves in ridiculous lifted trucks and giant SUVs. I'm sorry but they come across as greedy, needy for attention and somewhat belligerent. Do we really need 5k to 6k lb vehicles to drive back and forth to work? I guess it's a reflection of where we are as a society. My MX-5 will pull over 40mpg on the highway and averages 34mpg all while offering an amazingly fun time, even when slogging to work.

Your reviews are really detailed and they are much appreciated but sometimes, I just completely disagree with some of your opinions. Here, for example... power seats in a Miata ? Really? That goes against the mantra of the car.. it adds unnecessary weight. If I remember correctly, I think you also wanted moonroofs in cars like the 86 and Civic Type R or something along those lines (not going to fact check this). Like you missed the point that those features are intentionally left out by the engineers for a reason.

Also, I agree that for $4,800 for upgraded calipers and seats is not worth it, esp. bc the rotors are the same size. IDK it's slow. But, many people buy for the track and upgrade stuff. It must be really fun to drive though. How did they get rid of the throttle-by-wire rev hang? Wow, the Revs drop fast like a regular engine--throttle by wire.

I still love the Miata and I'm still planning to buy a ND2 before it goes away. It's such a timeless design and the ND2 will be highly sought after in the future, when the NE gets electrified. I do wish more channels would review the GT trim because that's the one that most buyers choose. Personally, I think the Club with this $4550 option package is too expensive and, even if I got a Club, I'd skip this package. Like you, my Miata of choice would be a GT manual soft top at around $34k (just over $32 with S-Plan). The GT still gets the Bilstein dampers and LSD, so you're not giving anything up from a performance standpoint. The Brembo brakes just aren't necessary, in my opinion.
@sandweiler4640

That is exactly the spec I got in SRC of course. In Europe the sport package is an extra 1500€ as compared to the GT line. But before (eventually) modifying the suspension I wanted to try the “normal” trim. Even the sport package is too soft for me most probably and I did not wanted the BBS wheels but original Mazda rims. Recaro seats were also not a must have for me. So I went for the exact trim you are describing. Furthermore, one car was available at the dealership with these exact specs. So I called my wife, got the green light 😂 and got the car 😊. It was that or waiting at least 8 to 10 months. Got it in June and had a blast with it this summer. My reasons for getting the car were the exact same ones as yours: it is an analog car, a non-electrified car, a light car, it comes with a minimum of electronics or assistance BS. The NE might be great but the EU rules are a major concern, especially safety requirements (assistance that is useless). So the ND appeared to me as the Last of the Mohicans and I jumped on it while it still exists.

The BBS-Recaro package in the Club Sport is no stiffer than the GT package with a manual transmission. Both models have identical hardware, except for the brakes. Same Bilstein shocks, same strut tower brace, same KPC, same LSD, same tires. The BBS wheels have no effect on the ride quality. That leaves the Recaro seats as the only difference between the two, and, again, no, they don't effect the ride quality, at least not in terms of stiffness.

Cold-Air Intake Installed. Chromium Black XXR 530 Wheels Finished Off The Look. I'm Jealous Of Every ND Miata I See Regardless If It's a Male or Female, Roadster or RF.

Drove the nd1 and loved everything except the engine! Coming from a fbo 8th gen civic with high revving K20 I just couldn't accept the economy motor in the nd1 with only 150-60 hp. Will test drive a nd2 soon, hopefully the engine has more character

Former ND1 Miata owner. I’m sure the ND2 engine is better, but here’s the thing - there isn’t any new car that has the engine characteristics similar to a K20. It doesn’t exist. I would argue that the ND2 Miata is probably the closest thing you can get. I don’t know of any 4 cylinders sold today that rev to 7500 besides the ND2.

Drove the ND2 and S2000 back to back, F22 motor is in a whole different league, especially in high rpm when VTEC kick in.

@@Baggged_LC I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. The ND2 is the much better motor for daily driving as it makes more torque earlier.

You can get wireless Apple CarPlay and android auto on Kia and Hyundai vehicles. However, they have to have the non UVO (Kia) or blue link (Hyundai) infotainment system.

Mazda advertises the MX5 saying "it puts a smile in your face" and its funny how in EVERY MX5 video on youtube the "testers" at least at some point not only literally mention that phrase but also press the gas pedal and start laughing just out of nowhere.

No doubt, the body lines of the RF are stunning. But being an older traditionalist, I would opt for the drop-down cloth top that hearkens back more directly to the British roadsters of early '60s, which inspired the creation of the Miata from the beginning. I would choose that in the classier GT trim with the brighter wheels and interior chrome bezels around the switch gear and air vents. This video covered a 2022 model, but for 2023, Mazda added a new color: Zircon Sand Metallic, which makes this car appear more exotic and more expensive than it is.

How would you compare the Recaro seats to the GT seats? I have a 2010 NC Miata and was looking to move to the ND, but the GT seats are too soft and my back was sore after 20 minutes. Are the Recaro sets firmer in the seat bottom or provide more lumbar support?
@philliprumans753
@philliprumans753 2 жыл бұрын
I will say the GT's does lack lumbar support. I unzipped the back of the seat and put a lumbar pillow inside which actually pushes The lumbar area out in the seat from the inside back. Much better now And you would never know that the lumbar pillow is inside the seat back.
