So rare to see an auto journalist praise the corolla for what it’s trying to be!

Great point.

Most people complain that the Corolla is boring and has a slow CVT transmission - not enough power. But the Corolla is a good quality, reliable and value car. I have an SE with the premium package and paid $20,000 for it. The premium package includes weather floormats, Etune Plus upgrade, sunroof and SmartKey system.

A month ago someone t-boned my corolla at 45 miles a hour The Corolla stayed intact I was not seriously injured and airbags deployed as they should. Not saying it saved my life but I'm not saying it didn't. Just got another one today

This is a no brainer ....yes Buy it !! If you like this vehicle its really hard to go wrong getting one .Not my pick as I unfortunately like Hot Hatches and sports cars which traditionally trade off driving dynamics and performance generally speaking for reliability. For anyone who does like the Corolla and is thinking of getting one...yeah as I said its, a no brainer buy one !
@rightlanehog31516 жыл бұрын
Glad you mentioned that the new hatch will be built on the TNGA platform when it arrives this summer. With all the disruption/relocation/disruption/relocation of Corolla sedan assembly taking place across North America right now, it is hard to say when the all-new sedan will actually come to market. In the meantime the made-in-Canada Corolla is a super sensible choice for people who love trunks and eschew hatches.

I'll take the hatch.

Just a small thing but I really like that good sized digital clock at eye level on the mid-dash. I knew someone with a 1990's Tercel who had the same feature. In my car I always have to squint to check the time. I like the look of the dash, everything is pretty sensible. Might be buying a used 2018 soon with low mileage so thanks Mike Gurr for an informative review. No traffic on the DVP that's a change.

great review! The XSE seems pricey to me specially when you can get the Nissan Leaf SV for 29K in ontario after taxes and rebates. Not sure why buyers of affordable commuter cars aren't looking into EVs.
@jamesng85546 жыл бұрын
Martin Diaz Range anxiety and battery loss (over time and cold weather). At 0C, batteries lose 5% range, but heating for 0C eats much more than just 5%. (Google Nissan Leaf temperature graphs) The rational sane city commuter would buy an electric car and rent for longer use, but realistically they want a vehicle to drive for camping, commuting, -30C and still have good range and quick fill. That and trudge through 5cm of snow.

no matter how good a corolla is, it will never shake off the bad reputation of their drivers or it's just a driving school's car...
@anthropology4everyone6226 жыл бұрын
Ahh B, That "bad reputation' has resulted in over 44 million Corollas sold. For people who do not fantasize about being a Formula 1 driver and who hate wasting money on repairs, the Corolla has always been just about the best choice there is. The next generation ought to offer a big increase in "driving dynamics" for those who regularly confuse their suburban streets with the Nurburgring.

Trades46, Is the jury still out on those new Honda turbos or shall we simply assume they will last for 20 years like Honda's NA engines?
@Trades466 жыл бұрын
If you're afraid of turbo engines, Mazda 3 perhaps? My statement is that the Corolla is fine as a means of transportation, but just not very interesting to people who like cars.
@rightlanehog31516 жыл бұрын
T46, I'm not afraid of turbo engines, I am TERRIFIED by them. If I was shopping in this segment today I 'd get the iM manual. This summer a new 170HP Corolla hatch will be on the market that will probably offer best in class fuel economy. We'll see how "boring" that is compared to the interesting options ;)

The CVT in Honda's Civic is very nice too. Had several Corollas during my lifetime the best was the wagon from late sixties. Apart from the rust back then. All imports used to suffer badly from that. Then they, Toyota, dropped the wagon. The last one we had was a sedan in 1980's and it was a nice car then. The Tercel came in a wagon type hatch. Reasonable price always with a Corolla. Today's 132 HP etc. is painfully slow overall, when compared to other similar equipped vehicles. Especially once you get out of city limits here, in southern B.C. Obviously their marketing people, know what they are about? I didn't even go look last fall.
@rightlanehog31516 жыл бұрын
JA, The next Corolla will have about 170 HP and a top spec suspension so it ought to be substantially quicker. Fingers crossed, Toyota will bring back the wagon they still sell overseas.
