In the U.S. right now, the easiest way to cash in on the $7500 EV tax credit may actually be through a lease. Some of the cars that used to qualify for the purchase credit now don't, BUT there is a loophole that allows manufacturers to build the same discount into a lease credit. There are many complexities to this but the bottom line is that many dealers are pushing leases on EVs, often with a $7500 lease discount specifically called out.

There were about 500 Electric vehicle makers in China in 2019 at the start of Covid-19. Now there are less than 100 as the public's buying patterns determine who will succeed in EV startups. Currently just Tesla is the only one nearing long term profitability. Now even they are threatened as the high pricing of the industry is turning so many people against purchasing now. Lease if you have to go electric, provided the numbers makes sense. As the re-sale value of used EVs continues downward, the industry is struggling. Plug EVs & plug-hybrids really only work for people who own their own home/garage to charge it in, as public metered charging is very inconvenient, unreliable & quite a bit more costly. Current EV battery-tech also doesn't fare well in cold climates, or extreme heat for that matter. Then there is high battery replacement costs, high auto insurance costs & lower used trade/sell values for full-EV vehicles. I wouldn't buy anything more than a no-plug hybrid at this point when it comes to an EV type vehicle.
