This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Ford maverick Hybrid, the North American Truck of the Year and the most fuel efficient pickup truck you can buy! Ford Maverick, the North American truck of the year! Not only is this hybrid fuel efficient, but also affordable. We are driving the XLT hybrid in Hot Pepper Red, which is the top trim in Canada. The Ford Maverick is versatile, practical and great for someone who wants the utility of an open bed without having to drive a large pick up truck. It gives you the best of both worlds, compact on the outside and spacious enough on the inside. The Maverick offers a 4.5-foot bed with 1500 pounds of payload capacity. It can tow 2,000 pounds but with the optional tow package available on the 2L Ecoboost AWD model; it can tow 4,000 pounds. The Ford Maverick Hybrid comes standard with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with a hybrid system is matched to an ECVT with a combined 191 horsepower, FWD only. In Canada, the hybrid powertrain is only available on the XL and XLT models but in the US, it is available on all models including, the top Lariat trim. The second engine option is a 2L Ecoboost with 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD in Canada. In the US, FWD and AWD options are available. In Canada, it is available on the XL and XLT models, standard on the Lariat.
The Maverick hybrid gets incredible fuel economy; it’s rated at 5.6L/100 km, 42 MPG city and 7.1L/100km, 33 MPG highway. But, we are actually getting 5.3L/100km, 44 MPG in the city, which is impressive. The Ford Maverick hybrid comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, a 4.2” instrument cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, manual driver and passenger seats, a black Onyx Cloth interior, power door locks and power windows, remote key-less entry, keyed ignition, LED headlights, Flexbed system, 17” wheels and a full-size spare tire. The Ford Maverick Hybrid XL starts at $27,750 CAD/$19,995 USD, XLT $30,350 CAD/$22,360 USD and the Lariat $25,860 USD. The 2L Ecoboost FWD XL model in the US starts at $21,080 USD, XL AWD $29,350 CAD/$24,385 USD, XLT AWD $31,950 CAD/$26,750 USD, Lariat AWD $35,400 CAD/$30,250 USD.

I've had my Lariat Hybrid w/lux pkg and sunroof for about a month and a half now (ordered last July). I'm absolutely smitten with the Maverick. Ford really did this one right. And yeah, the MPG is crazy good. I have a 5 mile one way commute which I normally am doing about 2-3.5 miles in electric and the rest I get 40-55 mpg, consistently. I would have thought with the USMCA Agreement (formally NAFTA) that this Mexican built Ford would have been slightly closer aligned with the American price, which I think makes this compact truck … a literal steal! I still think that this truck still offers one of the best values in the Canadian/U.S. market. Ford did an absolutely brilliant job. They said that they’d build a $20,000 hybrid pickup… and they actually did! Well done them! Thanks for the video.

It’s not really the powertrains and design but solely the price. You just can’t design a worse vehicle for the money and have someone buy it, car in itself isn’t anything special, it’s good value because it’s cheap, not because it’s good. It’s just ok.

Cancelled my order after the dealership was screwing with me. Ford couldn't deliver, etc. Typical 2022 car issues. One thing about the small cargo. If you need to haul something there are extend a bars available to put on the trailer hitch. These things can easily extend another two or three feet. Perfect for a small row boat (if you don't have a trailer) or plywood, etc. I'll wait for my truck when things settle down. It's crazy with the dealership mark ups, etc.

Great review, and thank you, Andrea, you're right -- snows on the front eliminate the need for 4x4 for 98% of us (I'm also a Vancouverite), while keeping the drivetrain light, simple and efficient. Not sure about needing a pushbutton 'start', though, since the hybrid engine doesn't start in the traditional sense. But overall, nice job as usual! Watch for me driving by in my cactus grey XLT.

@uni4rm
@uni4rm 2 жыл бұрын
Push button start is standard on Lariat in US. If folks really want the Maverick AND push button and do not want the Lariat, you can add a button third party or DIY. I do not think any Maverick has a wireless radio system, which is why it uses a keypad and corded carplay with Lariat instead of keyless entry and wireless carplay. The Santa Cruz does have these, but it also costs thousands more.

If one looks at the cost of the Maverick Hybrid with the luxury package, one may end up better off getting the base Escape Hybrid (which has more standard features) So its a matter if a person needs a box or not. What's the point of making a pick up truck with front wheel drive and a CVT. Why not offer a five speed manual transmission and real wheel drive? They got a lot of things right on this thing but there was a lot of things missing in the choices as well.

@Buddy_Kryyst 2 жыл бұрын
They hybrid isn' CVT it's an ECVT, it's completely different from CVT, why they kept the same 3 letters is beyond me, but don't let that confuse you. The ECVT transmission in the hybrid is really well designed and the Ecoboost gets an standard 8 speed. No CVT in either model.

from the nightmare stories i've heard from early BEV truck owners : for a serious hauler/loader BEVs are simply not ready for prime time (battery energy density) on no one loves the prospect of getting all loaded up and having the batteries die and pray u are in the vicinity of a fast charger! so hybrids make a lot more sense for me...

Great review! We got an XLT with just the CoPilot360 option added on. The fuel economy and the usability of the package are no doubt the most salient features, but I'd additionally highlight: a) This is an eCVT drivetrain originally licensed from Toyota back in 2008 and used in the Ford Fusion Hybrid, though the electric motor is now an updated version fully developed in-house. Only Toyota and Ford offer proper eCVTs and besides being the most efficient design, I'd also put in doubt the long-term reliability of the other hybrid approaches. b) It's unfortunate that Ford restricts their high-end CoPilot360 features to the Lariat trim, in my opinion safety features should be offered across the board. c) The plastics look and feel okay to the touch for the price point, but they scratch very easily, however I totally understand it had to fit a budget. On the plus side, there are no squeaks after six months of use. Ford has a best seller in its hands.

Before I put a deposit on the Rav 4 Hybrid I thought about the Maverick hybrid. I decided against it for the Rav 4 hybrids better highway economy. The interior is actually a plus for me. Simple, yet a bit flamboyant and those plastics will likely never wear. I hope Toyota comes up with something of this sort in the future. Ford nailed a market. Glad to see Small Trucks coming back. But how about Mini car/truck of yester years. Remember the VW car/truck based on the golf and the Ram Rampage I think it was called. That's all l need, 2 seats and a bit of a box a small 4cyl and a manual. And can the T-roof make a come back. Hello fronm Vancouver Island

That's my thoughts about this too. Convert to a 2 door, 2 seat version and add the extra length to the box.

That's the real reason there isn't an AWD hybrid ... they don't need to sell one because they can't even keep up with current demand. People are paying over MSRP already and have to order the more expensive (and profitable) 2.0t if they really, really need AWD. In a year or so when demand cools off then they'll introduce an AWD hybrid to stoke the fires again.

Great review. As always. So glad that you got around to review one - probably had to wait for one to be available :) This truck has been on my list and I've never owned a truck. But, as weird as this sounds, the fact that it doesn't have keyless entry...made me think twice. I know it's a stupid thing to gripe about...but EVERY other car does...I would feel like I'm buying some basic car from 10 yrs ago. That said...still consider it...if I could actually get one. If you do end up getting one :P hope you don't have to wait too long!

The problem with push button start is when you switch drivers! I drove to the airport to catch a flight. My wife left with the car. I only noticed that I had the key fob when I went through security. Had to call her and warn her not to turn the car off and get back to the airport straight away so I could give her the key! Almost missed my flight.

Why can't manufacturers place electronic rotary gear shifts elsewhere to free up that space for more utility space? I have always wondered.... I think that is how I would prefer it. Also, Hybrid + pick up @ $26K CAD, i think that combo is what makes this great. If Ford ever add 4WD option to hybrid... it's game over.

This Maverick order holder (10 months and still waiting) suggests that potential buyers go check out the Maverick Truck Club before they sign up for a Maverick. Lots of happy owners. More than a few unhappy owners. Plenty of stories of dead hybrids and Mavericks that can't be fixed because parts aren't available. The majority of Maverick owners seem to be in a state of bliss. But you should read and heed the tales of woe too.

I had a 1988 front wheel drive Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. It worked very well on snow and ice covered roads. Yes, I didn’t need to drive it off road or pull a trailer so the less expensive and fuel efficiency of the car worked very well for me. I won’t be doing serious off-roading so for me, I’d like Ford to keep the front wheel drive only option and offer all wheel drive to those that want it.

Tell you what Andrea and Zack, if you don't like that Maverick Hybrid, just give it to me, I'll be happy to take it off your hands. Thinking of selling my as guzzling 5.7 V8 Tundra, but I still have it because I need the towing capacity, but if I sell my travel trailer (which I'm thinking of), towing capacity won't be a concern. I can see myself driving a Maverick, but not a Santa Cruz (more expensive and imho not as good quality or reliability, Hyundai/Kia is really struggling with engine failures and vehicle fires these days).

Love the video but I have to be honest, that top-down take of you driving (16:55 mark) looks like it's not designed for taller people at all. The steering wheel is literally a hand length away from your belt buckle and a couple of inches above your thighs. That is worrisome to me as a 6'1 male. I'll have to test drive it to be sure but I REALLY want to like this truck. If anybody in comments has an answer, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Glad to see the cheep mini truck class return. Maverick is a new vehicle segment on its own. It a totally different character than the Toyota or Nissan w body on frame and transfer cases. At $5-10000 cheeper than the Santa cruz or Ridgeline, you cant compare them either. And then the fuel economy. Ask yourself is it worth paying $10000 more for a Ridgeline … and then another $1500 more a year in fuel. By the time the warranty is up, the Maverick has saved you $17500!! Dont get me wrong all those other trucks are amazing at what they do but the Mav kills it at cheep, practical transportation. Dont tell my wife but im heading to the dealer tomorrow!

The biggest problem with the XLT luxury package is that it comes with a *drop in* bedliner, which is worse than no liner at all as it traps all the water between the bed and liner, so it never dries out, which can cause premature rusting.

True if you park down hill and or don't drive much. I've got a 1995 gmc sierra with the oem drop in. Zero rust except for the cab corners. I park up hill so any water that gets behind it drains out. And if it does set somewhere that is can build up I make a note to drive it soon so it gets a chance to all drain out.

This is one reason I think the plug in Jeep hybrid will fail. It costs over twice as much as the Maverick and offers LESS cargo capacity. Chrysler always loses the plot. I'm honestly surprised they haven't seen any massive drops in sales recently.

You can tell from the audio that the plastic makes the interior more noisy. Softer surfaces absorb sound, plastic reflects it. But, that plastic will be easy to clean. The Marverick would be great at the MSRP, but not at the price dealers are currently charging.

Shame on the big three in this country, we could have had cars at 50 miles a gallon in the 40s, but we chose not to because of the stranglehold the oil industry has on America. The electric car was built first 3 years before the first automobile combustible engine. Do you know where that technology would be today if we would have stayed or still invested, research and development of electrical vehicles. Shame on you ford GM and Chrysler the only reason I buy cars is because I have to have one.
