Man these challenges are brutal. Best thing about it is the challenges are totally even. Long wheel base trucks are great for Hill climbs & mud holes but the short base trucks are better with the rough stuff like rock crawling events. Definitely nice either way.

Seems like the rigs I had picked to win the hill climb did not do so well. One thing I notice though, is that even the short vehicles have the front axle pretty far ahead of the motor. This will give them a better center of gravity and angle of attack.
@user-neo71665
@user-neo71665 9 жыл бұрын
Most of the time you have to move the front axle forward when running larger tires unless you want to jack the truck up 6 feet or have the tire come inside the cab on suspension compression.

What kind of power are these trucks putting down?
@chefdan87
@chefdan87 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on their setups. These trucks are not focused on horsepower but torque. Also where the torque is made in the powerband. Some of the trucks here have large displacement engines like the black ford 472ci is what i think they said, the red bronco has a 460ci, and the green dodge is running something big "cant remember what they said he is running", that build their torque very low in the rpms. But others have smaller engines like the 350ci but have double transfer cases to get a mechanical advantage through gears. Im sure these engines are built well but i cant see why any of them would have more than like 500ftlbs of torque. The super low gears in the axles and transfer cases and transmissions allow for less power needed. That green dodge though that things sounds mean.

@loveyardwork
@loveyardwork 9 жыл бұрын
Big tires are hard to stop its easier to slow the gears
@mtootm
@mtootm 9 жыл бұрын
slow the gears? but aren't the gears connected to the tires. i mean that's what moves the tires. wouldn't it be more weight since not only are you stopping the gears, but also the tires connected to the axle which is connected to the gears. I thought it was to give more/better ground clearance for the tires if you don't have any discs to smash into the rocks. maybe i'll go do my own research.
@jaybugni9272

Seems after watching a couple seasons, its to the series' advantage to have a few high dollar, well purpose built machines and a few literal junkers with idiot owners to keep it interesting, that F250 and that tan IH pickup couldn't so anything if they were the only people there.

What is it on the front axle spinning? Looks like a disc brake.
@Steinerrides
@Steinerrides 10 жыл бұрын
That's because it is a disc brake. They're military axles, so they have the brakes in the center so they don't need to pull 500+ pound wheels to change out brakes.
@icemanroyal
@icemanroyal 10 жыл бұрын
Matthew Stein ah i always wondered about that thing too, thanks for the explination
@mindkiller76
@mindkiller76 10 жыл бұрын
Matthew Stein Never heard of this before, smart though. Thanks for the reply.
@Keifsanderson
@Keifsanderson 10 жыл бұрын
Matthew Stein Of course I may be wrong, but the fact that they are military axles has nothing to do with the pinion brake. The military runs outboard brakes on these axles. The design of the axle incorporates a flange so multiple axles can be daisy chained (think dual-rear axles). Engine power flows through the first axle and on to the rear. These guys simply re-purpose the flange to add the pinion brake, which has the advantage of stopping both tires symmetrically (with a locked diff) and capitalizing on the mechanical advantage of being up-stream of the axle gears, which helps slow down those big tires.
@Steinerrides
@Steinerrides 10 жыл бұрын
keifsanderson You're probably right. I never actually looked it up. I always figured that the pinion brakes were part of the axles because every 4x4 I've seen with Rockwell military axles had pinion brakes on them. I never looked closely at a military 6x6 to see if they had those brakes.

@peepeepoopooman505
@peepeepoopooman505 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on application and set up.
@erik_curtis
@erik_curtis 10 жыл бұрын
Longer wheelbase is usually better for climbing (it keeps the truck from flipping over), shorter is better for rocks (less chance to high center between the wheels). That's the idea of sending these trucks through all these challenges, you have to make tradeoffs between the various types of off-roading.
@chefdan87
@chefdan87 10 жыл бұрын
Erik has it right. Both short and long has its advantages and disadvantages. I personally love my broncos shorter wheel base for its abilities on obstacles and tight turning radius, but my buddies f250 can do stuff i cant like steeper climbs and heavier towing.
@kjorepo
@kjorepo 10 жыл бұрын
Long Wheel base will keep you from pitching on hills and inclines, and the short wheel base makes you more maneuverable. So depending on what kind of terrain you wheel in, will dictate the design of the vehicle. It is nice to have a well balanced vehicle, so you must consider wheel base, weight, width, un-sprung weight, tire size, clearance, protection, and power. This year we had quite the variety. Way fun to watch!
