Fantastic Lewis. I think I told you before my late Grandad was a LMS driver and drove many of these Locos finishing up as a top link driver on the Coronation class from Glasgow to Euston. He ran over the S&C line for many years driving Patriots ,Black 5's and the Royal Scots. A fantastic man .I miss him and his wonderful stories .Many thanks for some great memories of a true gentleman. Mind you he said the introductions of the diesels were a godsend .He loved the class 44/45 'S

For what it's worth Lewis, I really love this 'new format' of video content, and applaud you for it. It is great to hear your narration and descriptions of how you managed to achieve what you have with both layouts. So many words of praise have (rightly) been heaped upon you commending what you have achieved by, in your own words ''winging it''. I personally do not subscribe to that view, but you do have this undeniable knack for achieving massive visual effect, without resorting to the very great skills of the 'fine scale' builder. These insights you are giving are therefore of the greatest interest to all. Especially with 'time and space' (now that's one hell of a subject in another field) being of such great consideration to us micro layout builders. I sincerely hope that the long black and gold model that I hope is lurking somewhere out of sight, is running well and happily? Sincere regards - Teresa Findhorn Light Rly.

It's great to see your locomotives in detail along with your thoughts about them. Even some of the older models can still look nice and when running them the lack of fine detail is lost as you're not going to be looking at them close up, it also means less parts to knock off. I now have a couple of split chassis loco's, the key thing is to keep an eye on the axle spacers for splits and they should run as well as any other loco.

Hi Lewis, another lovely in depth look at your loco fleet..................I think nearly all your best runners were Bachmann of origin. Hornby are ok, but I always find them too light and unable to haul alot, especially as I have inclines on my own layout. I get your comments on the valve gear, there seemed to be alot more movement in the real thing than the model, maybe there is some design reason they can't make it prototypical, who knows! Anyway looking forward to seeing your LNER fleet, they are my favourite locomotives, with LMS a very close second! All the best and thanks Dave..............oh and Happy Christmas if there isn't another video beforehand!

Great video as always. Cool observations regarding the valve gear. Isn't it funny how something that nominally should be just a superficial detail, stands out in movement, even if it's an acceptable wrong. I always think it's a little lamentable that in 1948 Hornby Dublo managed to get full working valve gear on Atholl, but most manufacturers today (including "premium" brands like BLI) are a bit lazy on it and just have the link moving and not bother about the valve rods. I never tire of looking at your "small" layout, I could watch your steamers just going back and forth in front of the signal box for hours, which, coincidentally, is exactly what I'm doing. Glad you used code 100. almost, almost gets away with a vague appearance of bullhead...
@MouldyRaspberry2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes that’s a very good point actually 🤣 I’ve never minded code 100 myself, I think once it’s weathered the difference isn’t so great.

Hi Lewis, nice to see your collection and hear a little about them. I do love the Coronation class 'Sir William A Stanier' in that gorgeous crimson lake livery. Seeing yours in earlier videos inspired me to get my own. Expensive, but I have no regrets and it's arguably my favourite loco in my collection. I also have a 'Duchess of Gloucester' in early BR blue which is also very nice, although I have a slight preference for Sir William which has a touch more standout detail. On the otherhand I got the blue one for £50 less! The Hornby princesses are very good too, although I like the smoke deflectors on the Coronations. Have you considered getting one? When it comes to the 4-6-0s I opted for a Royal Scot rather than a Black 5. The very old and rather basic tooling on the Hornby black 5s put me off, hopefully they'll update them sometime soonish. I'm tempted to get a patriot though if I see one at a decent price. I don't have a mogul but do have a BR 2-6-0 K1 which looks pretty similar, although of course it's a Peppercorn rather than an LMS design. I think it may be the favourite of my black goods locos. The Fowler 4F 0-6-0 tender is a decent little loco. Somewhat basic, but mine only cost me £40 and you can't argue with that. Lastly I have a crimson LMS Fowler 2-6-4T, the most attractive of my tank engines and also only £40, a steal. P.S. A bit of feedback: The difference in sound level between your intro and your narration is quite big. I had to go back and really turn the sound up to hear you. I feel a bit churlish pointing this out as your videos and in particular the sound is usually so excellent.
@MouldyRaspberry2 жыл бұрын
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it. I would like a Princess at come point, another expensive one but probably worth the money for another 'flag ship' loco. I agree about the Black 5 - I think it's crazy nobody has brought out an updated version of one of the most common and popular locomotives....

At 13:29 ish, you are having fun with what is known as the reversing gear, on a Stanier 2-6-0. The curved crank with a central slot in it, in real life moves up or down the pivot which passes through the slot. The further up or down this slightly "C" shaped crank is, indicates how much forward or reverse gear the loco is being given. However on the Bachmann model, they have for some odd reason put this crank in "mid-gear" (or Neutral is car parlance). On the real loco as seen, the gear appears to be in forward gear of around 30-35%, presumably because it is ascending a gradient. Don't forget you are looking at the real loco from the opposite side to the way the model is being viewed, so the curved crank should be a slight "C" shape facing forwards on BOTH sides, and the model appears correct in this ! Your Bachmann Crab appears the same as mine, older mechanism, and no tender pick-ups. Not very suitable for my Southern layout so mine is collecting dust. However these older models which to me sound like a Bag of nails when hauling loads, are similar to the Bachmann N class 2-6-0. If you examine the driving wheels you will find that they are actually a casting, not chromed brass as on Hornby models. I rebuilt one of my N class locos into a similar looking U1, and had to change the wheels to a larger 6ft size using Nickel Silver Romford wheels. The result was stunning as it made the model much quieter, and dramatically improved the haulage capacity by 25% !!! Cast wheels are more prone to vibration, which encourages slipping to set in, when the loco is hauling a reasonable load. Bachmann have since dumped cast wheels, as they now have more modern tooling, hence the older models are slowly being upgraded. The Bachmann "Flying Pig" 2-6-0 is suffering a simple problem with its slight "tight spot". The older tooling it was produced on, simply wasn't as refined as their new tooling. Thousandths of a Millimetre really do matter in production of steam loco mechanisms ! With use (heavy loads) this tight spot may vanish...... The ex Midland 0-6-0 freight loco, exhibits one thing that as an ex Train Driver irks me. It was a rule that the cab window the driver uses has to be clean. Indeed if the window was dirty the driver was entitled to stop the train if necessary to get it cleaned, or even run at a reduced speed until such time as he could stop to get it cleaned. So weathered models with dirty cab windows, are unrealistic. Happy ugh modelling - or maybe than't cleaning !!!!!!!!!

Great video Lewis. On the out of cinque valve gear. Bachmann have a very poor record when it comes to this. I too have had problems identical to yours. To some degree you can improve it by carrying out the loosening of the crank axle screw as you showed. The real problem it is down to the quartering and the two flat sides that are on the Brass crank axle. To some degree Hornby have been the same E.G if you look at your black 5 45379 that is just the same on the right side. This problem can in some cases cause the model to have a bit of a wobble. It is a shame that this is so often overlooked by manufacturers though recent Hornby LNER Class A2 loco's are an improvement thanks to some degree the input of Tony Wright of BRM
@MouldyRaspberry2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Denis. Yes you're spot on - I didn't mention that for some other locos as I didn't want to drag the video out, but as you say many hornby locos have the valve gear right on one side and wrong on the other! I've noticed it on my K1, Std 4MT, 7MT and 8F. Weirdly not the case on my B1 though. I've always wondered why it was the case but your explanation makes perfect sense. I know Tony Wright rightly has very high standards so that's great he has some input and Hornby are taking note. Thanks again for the comment.
@alantoms32632 жыл бұрын
Interesting complement in the fleet. Love Sir William of course, but the 5's and 8F always add something. I too have several Hornby locomotives with tight spots and am often trying to find where they 'nip' and seeing if they can be freed, and yet the Bachmann, despite 'poorer quality chassis' invariably are more consistent, without tight spots. Strange one! Biggest pains are the lovely Britannias - I've reviewed the valvegear from every angle, have removed and replaced gears, and have even removed drivers and re-quartered. I may have another go, but they seem to 'smooth out' after having run for 5 minutes' time ... just one of those things I suppose. I did get that Crab I was asking about a few months ago - lovely model, well worth it. Al.
@MouldyRaspberry2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Al. I’ve found the exact same thing as you in relation to Bachmann and Hornby locos. Very strange. I’ve never had much luck either trying to sort them myself. I usually end up selling those on and buying another, which usually works fine! Glad you liked the Crab!

Nice roster.The only drawback I see is the 8F and the Black Five, not bad models, but ageing ones. If Hornby wants to retool them to today's standards, they have a customer with me. Anyway, as is, they are decent runners (mine at least) and looks nice.

@JamesSmith-mv9fp2 жыл бұрын
I note you have added weight (lead shot) to the underside of the one of the Black 5's front ends above the bogie ! This will tend to unbalance the loco if you have not also added weight inside the boiler and particularly an equivalent amount in the area around or under the cab at the rear ! Indeed I have also weighted most of my Hornby tender locos with lead shot to increase pulling performance, as for some odd reason Hornby seem averse to weighting tender locos, while they cram diesels and electric locos with weight to often 400-500g !!! The worst tender loco "offender" seems to be the newish (SR) Lord Nelson. Which at 221g when new, is absurdly under weight and won't pull more than 7 or 8 on the level, and I have NO curve on my layout sharper than 5ft radius. The sharper your curves the less any loco can pull around them, as trains do not have car type differentials in their axles. These Lord Nelsons I have found, need at least another 110g adding inside the boiler to allow them to pull 12/13 coaches without slipping. Repeated slipping doesn't do the motor or drive train any good !!!! A rule of thumb for tender loco weights, to ensure they can pull at least 12 coaches on the level is around 325g. I use fishing tackle lead shot, glued with UHU, so it can all be removed if necessary later, without damage to the model. Your weathering and other improvements, such as reducing the engine to tender gap. And the use of practical Kadee couplings for invisible uncoupling, really do make your models look far more realistic, and others should be encouraged to follow suit. Happy modelling.
@MouldyRaspberry2 жыл бұрын
Thanks James, appreciate it. I've got weight in the body and cab for the Black 5 - makes a huge difference as you say! That's very true, I'm really not sure why that couldn't be sorted - I guess it comes down to profit margins or something...
