Pepper Steak is one of my favorite all time comfort foods, not only because it's delicious, but it's also east to make! But we don't always have the means to cook homemade foods if we're out camping, hunting, hiking or in a emergency situation. So that's when Mountain House Freeze Dried Italian Style Pepper Steak with rice and tomatoes comes in handy! All you need to do is add boiling water! These meals also last up to 30 years so they are a great food storage item! BUT, are they any good? Watch and see! they have lots and lots of different choices to try. Some breakfast lunch and dinner options. Also you can get many of these in a number 10 can. Which is much more cost-effective. Has a long shelf life and I believe one year after you break the seal. my favorite from mountain House is the chili mac with beef, and second of all as a camping or survival food would be the beef stew because it has a little bit of everything in it they do not skimp on the beef or the veggies in any of their meals. I would say the beef stew taste almost exactly like dinty Moore Stew in a can. Not the most amazing stew I've ever had in my life certainly not as good as homemade. But very tasty very Hardy and as I said they are not skimping on the meet at all. My only suggestion on all of these meals is the 8 to 9 minutes is a bit short for rehydration on many of these you are not going to hurt it by letting it hydrate longer I usually let It go 12 to 15 minutes just to make sure everything got rehydrated good. Their cinnamon apples are quite good, and you can sometimes get bulk items in 5 gallon buckets. Such as a large bucket of pork chops, or apples Etc. Love your videos you should definitely try some more of these.

This product is mis-named. I worked in an Italian restaurant and catering facility in NJ, right in the middle of the tri-states area, Fortune 500 country. "Pepper Steak" and "Steak & Peppers" are two totally different dishes. Pepper steak was simply a steak, broiled and pan fried with fresh, cracked black pepper to order, Ala Carte. Traditional Steak and Peppers (Steak, Peppers and Mushrooms was more authentic Northern Italian version) is always prepared with some kind of red sauce like Marinara, usually offered as a Special. It was very popular with caterers because it was so easy to prepare and keep warm in a chafing dish. It was never served on rice. Rice was never considered an ingredient in Italian dishes. It was an American and Oriental idea. That freeze dried food would make an Italian chef cry. Not too bad on the trail, no doubt. I packed in lots of that stuff into northern Idaho Panhandle years ago on Priest Lake.

As a wilderness backpacker, I've been enjoying Mountain House products for many decades. They are uniformly quite good for light-weight, easy to prepare freeze-dried foods, though their two-person pouches tend to be a bit skimpy for two. One secret to making them taste even better is to add a dollop of fat which tends to be missing from freeze-dried products as it is hard to preserve (we carry ghee which is very weight-efficient and doesn't need refrigeration). This amps up the flavor, provides needed extra calories, and helps the bopdy in utilizing fat-soluble vitamins. Mountain House's freeze-dried eggs with bacon may be the best eggs you'll have in the backcountry, not to mention saving a lot of time otherwise spent in cleaning dehydrated eggs from your cooking pot.

I added the boiling water about 35 minutes ago. I had to ask 3 people to find it. Near the guns and camping equipment. With zero appetite it tasted waaay better than I expected!!
@tfpvlogsandvids13395 жыл бұрын
Perspective is a funny thing...I eat these on the trail all the time because I think they're dirt cheap. They're super simple to make, they dont take up a lot of space in your pack, there is no clean up (other than your spoon I guess), zero "prep" before the trip and they taste AMAZING! Might not compete with a real home cooked meal but hike for 30 miles and then dig into one. There's another brand called backpacker pantry or something like that that's even cheaper I believe.

The new live commentary is a Great addition to your normal voice over style videos. How much is enough, or too much, is going to be based on the video you're doing. (And every bodies opinion is different)... Thanks for your videos!

Larry I love your reviews! I started watching when you did your episode on the Fray Bentos tin pie! and watched ever since. I do love it when you go on your rants as well though, you should do an angry Larry section/review for really bad stuff!. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more things from my country the UK sometime soon!.

Nice! I have some Mountain House emergency food stored for when the big one hits California before I get a chance to move to a better state. If you have a family, don't be negligent. It's very important to keep at least 55 gallons of water and food for a few weeks in case a natural disaster or worse hits your city/state. You don't want to see your children crying for food when feces really hits the fan. Prepare now and smile later...or be a cheap and lazy azz now and cry later when your family begins to starve.

MRE (Meal Ready to Eat). Maybe not pepper steak but there are a lot of dishes for about 5 to 7 bucks each and they're a complete meal. No, they don't last 30 years, but whatever.

Good video! I think people need to bear in mind that this is freeze-dried food. That would probably account for the difference in texture in the beef product. I would buy this product to have for emergency situations or camping.

If i'm remembering correctly, Mountain House used to produce freeze-dried entrees for the D.O.D. they were used in certain ration packs.

I've reverse engineered a few dehydrated meals. I have a dehydrator but I don't have a freeze dryer yet so I can't quite reverse engineer every such thing. For rehydrating the dehydrated foods I use a vacuum-insulated flask (y'know, a Thermos) with hot water.
