My most vivid memory of mountain was a couple candidates were bitten by rattle snakes - don't know it that's still a problem. I was into mountain climbing in Yosemite before I was drafted. The toughest thing for me was lack of food, yelling in my face when trying to eat and lack of sleep - you have to master semi-conscious exercise. Our RI's were hard as an anvil, all decorated old school combat vets. The fire selector should always face out from your ruck. Wish I had your advice for Benning but when I was in the army you were not born. class 10/72.

My graded APL mission was a never forget experience. RI grading me ended up with food poisoning and started puking during night mission. Ended up down in draw with thick vegetation which slowed our movement to a crawl. RI grabbed me in the pitch dark and said, "Don't lose me in here! I am so sick!" Had to drag him rest of the way for several hours. Mission was a navigational disaster for PL who failed. RI had to leave and be replaced but before he left he said, "PL gets a 'no go' and you probably should too but you drug my ass out of there so I'm giving you a 'go' so thanks." Next stop, desert phase. SUCKED!!!

The best memory of mountains phase was breakfast. Somehow that breakfast managed to keep me from being hungry until about 2pm when we were finishing up all the patrol rehearsals out in that long clearing. Being a skinny guy with a super high metabolism that was a short lived but enjoyed moment in ranger school.

I was PL for a highly successful ambush in Mountain phase, but still ended up with a No Go. Got a Go for Planning, Got a Go for maneuvering to designated objective, basically got a Go for everything leading up to the execution. So it's zero dark thirty, we have a text book L-shape ambush established on time and to standard. RI's weren't ready for what happened next, they weren't expecting the OPFOR for another hour and suddenly we began engaging a squad size force, that entered and ran through our ambush and kept going, so no dead bodies in the kill zone, couldn't execute searches and other text book shit. They were dressed and outfitted just like the OPFOR and were speaking a foreign language, we ended up ambushing a squad of Central American soldiers from the School of America's wearing OD green OPFOR uniforms with bonnie caps, that were lost and wandered into our kill zone. RI's initially thought we set it off too early and engaged phantoms, they didn't see the the squad enter our ambush, they thought we were shooting at hallucinations. So they gave me a NO GO, later they confirmed what we had said but still gave me a NO GO for engaging friendly forces that weren't suppose to be in our AO nor officially in the US. They overturned the No Go and had me do another PL mission.

Dude, fucking Pike saver!!! Awesome catch, even more awesome saving its life so it can grow big and get caught and appreciated in a few years. Well played. Thank you so much for your content. I'm 47 and engaging in a serious re-do of life and health and happiness. That has somehow manifested in essentially preparing myself for Ranger School/SF Selection. If I was 20 years younger I'd be doing it in order to enlist, now I'm doing it to live the fullest life I can. THANK YOU for the motivation, the awesome positive attitude, and the attention to detail you provide. I know you are making a major positive impact on the young men and women getting ready for the challenges ahead of them, but you are also providing a lifetime level example for us older folk to get our asses in shape, live life to the fullest, and be prepared physically, mentally, and spiritually to live a life of responsibility and action. Much appreciated!!! Thank you so much for your service!!

When I was in the Scouts(when it was actually still "The Boy Scouts") we trained with the Rangers up there for a week. We did a lot of the same things they did just not quite as intense. They wouldn't let us do the Aussie repel, though. But we did do the 30 fot wall, the 60 foot cliff face, the 60 foot over hanging boulder on Mnt. Yona (we did that 3 times during the day and twice at night). Then we climbed the 200 foot cliff face and repelled back down it. It was a lot of fun!

For the hike up Yona, there was a time hack we needed to hit. A guy in our platoon about four people from the front got off the pace and everyone behind him didn’t realize it because they were just focused on keeping up with the guy in front of them. 90% of the platoon picked up a minor minus because of it.

I went through in 90 when the Black Beret was the prize and our cadre were all hard assed Vietnam vets. Mountain phase toughest phase IMO just due tying knots backwards while fatigued. I had practiced knot tying but tying knots around your waist and obstacles in different positions is the best way to train. Also advanced land navigation with protractors is in your future so if you’re a flat lander or comms guy get some advanced training because the 11 series MOS guys have an edge on you.

Love this series! Also a video idea that I'd love to see if possible would be a land nav, or even a night time land nav video. I've heard some people say the land nav in army bootcamp was super lacking and they felt very under-prepared for SF selection in that aspect so I'd love to see it from your perspective! Thanks for the consistent videos, this channel is a gold mine of knowledge!

Mountains were hard in 1992. I agree breakfast was good, blueberry pancakes were awesome. The only phase I smelt muscle burning, smells like electricity. Received my only leadership No-Go in mountain phase as the weapons squad leader (one of my M60 gunners had rust on his weapon). Like Gritty said night OP's suck and all of the Ranger students in your squad are droning.

I got My only no-go in the Mountains. SFC Brazer was grading me that day, Brazer just got back from winning the Best Ranger. I relive that mission over and over in my head, for years now. I got the movement phase and Actions on the OBJ. Planning PL went over on his time, so I got a 15 minute brief from him on the Sand Table. So I was Depending on the PSG and Squad Leaders for the fine strokes on this mission. They Sucked! Acted like they were not at the OPORD. I was behind on time and honestly not Mature enough as a Leader to make it all Jell. My Actions on the OBJ was weak. I Learned that Day that I got to Earn my Tab! I got to be ready for the worst case scenario, which I had. Just ran out of time. Anyway I got my go on my second patrol and went to Florida and Tabbed out the First Mission. “Rangers Lead the Way”

im not a ranger im in the same boat as u but ive done some mountaineering and at first it’s rlly unnerving rappelling down especially on overhangs so just don’t try to walk down when u rappel, just fully trust the rope. I find leaning back so I have no choice but to trust the rope helps me go down

As a kid, I broke my arm two times falling from heights. Even through I was never a U.S. Army Ranger, I have rappelled down Mt. Yonah on several occasions. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.
@ml2725
@ml2725 2 жыл бұрын
I would say most people who are afraid of heights have more of a problem with Lead climb on Yonah rather than any of the rappels. Also, while the knots test is the only test during the Mountaineering portion at 5th, it is not the only GO/NO-GO event. You must complete each of the rappels (carabiner wrap, figure 8, extended ATC, extended ATC with Auto Block, and buddy rappel) and climbs ( Top Rope and Lead Climb). If you don't (you are given 2 chances) you will probably be recycled.
