Get your family affairs in order is the most important. I was a Ranger, I was a Green Beret, I was a Green Beret instructor….. I watched these schools destroy weak families from both sides of the fence. Do these schools while you’re young, dumb and single…if possible. If you’re married, send her to her moms house If you can. I lost my first wife while in Ranger school. She caught those few months of freedom and was in the wind. I got my Black and Gold Tab. That was my goal when I was a kid. Wife problems didn’t stop me. I retired at 45 and she’s still looking for PX privileges. Train em up Gritty….. less and less are volunteering for these schools and units. RLTW!

I’ll add one. Show up knowing how to tie an end of the line bowline with an overhand safety knot. Sure, they teach you during mountains, but every issued sensitive item has to be secured to either your ruck or LBE with one starting in Darby, so that doesn’t really help. If you can’t tie one and need your ranger buddies to help square you away multiple times a day it isn’t gonna help you with peers.

Dummy cord all your sensitive items to you and your ruck. Also be consistent with where your stashing your gear on you or in your ruck.... Dessert Phase (when they had it) Winter 89, they had one honey bucket at base camp that everyone used, it had a pile of shit at least 1 foot above the seat. Your wearing a Parka, mickey mouse boots, quilted wooby gear and polartech everyone looked like the Michelin Man. In order to take a dump you had to stripe your snivel gear layers off, and perform this trapeze squat to take a dump... When I got dressed again couldn't find my watch cap... found it buried by the hot steaming crap I just took...anywhere else it would have stayed there. I ended up fishing it out, grabbing a 1 gallon zip lock baggie with detergent and water and shook the shit out of it. But couldn't get rid of that blue juice smell... after Tabbing set that bitch a fire. True story, no shit!

Also if you ever deploy if you can call, email or text home everyday, don't. Your family will expect it and the day you don't call home they will get all anxious and lite up the FRG and worry like hell and fear the worst till they hear from you or uniforms come knocking at the door. Don't be that guy. Randomly call, text, email... set no pattern its better for their mental health and keeps you focused on your mission... staying alive to get home.

But if you hear this AFTER finishing/failing RS? You are only nodding like "What the heck was I thinking??" 😂 GREAT work man!! 💪You can't stress enough that but you should at the same time

I’m a former Marine. Ranger class 12-92- I know it was a long time ago, but I believe that the most important thing at that school is going to be attitude. Be a good peer. Peer evaluation will end you if you don’t. Secondly, people just giving up too soon and thinking they can’t go any further. But when the truck shows up to pick them up, they all of a sudden spring to life to throw their shit in the back.

No shit good advice here! The San Francisco earthquake happened at the start of Darby Phase late 89. My entire family caught up in it. Was told to Charlie Mike and I would get a red cross message if shit happened to them. They even wouldn't allow me to make a phone call. Wasn't able to call home until after Darby phase.

How to pass Ranger school 1. Know that a Ranger tab doesn’t make you an actual Ranger. 2. Don’t be a bitch. 3. Don’t quit There’s really nothing you can do to prepare, other than land nav. just put your head down and grind it out. Really is amazing how there’s so many videos on KZbin giving people these hidden tips that really don’t count for anything once you’re exhausted and hungry. Just endure

Hey Gritty, currently in a pre Ranger program at BOLC with our course date drawing near! What advice would you give for someone not in the infantry going through the course? Currently in the realm of “you don’t know what you don’t know” and want to help bridge the knowledge gap to be the most effective asset to the team. Already plan on leveraging artillery knowledge to help on missions, thanks for the video!

@skeletor3478

It wont matter at all during RAP week. I would say: When you get to Darby and meet your squad, let them know you are an FA officer and help with those O planning tasks. You need a scheme of fire for every mission, so help with that and paragraph 1/3 and you should be good. Your best bet is sticking with the younger Batt kids, those guys will square you away tactically. Those dudes blew our infantry officers out of the water. Let them know you maybe haven't spent a whole ton of time doing patrols and they'll help you out, but if you try to hide it and mess up that will probably piss them off. They won't peer you for being FA though.

Gritty, what’s the 2nd biggest event that gets the NO-GO? Rucking being number one for washing people out, in my experience land nav was the next event that gave out a bunch of NO-GOs. Please tell me we aren’t relying on GPS. I’ve been out for 20 years, but I’m hearing land nav is becoming more problematic.

When I went, the RPFT was probably one of the biggest fail events. Followed by the ranger tasks. Personally, I think people fail land nav because they “psych” themselves out. Not because they don’t know how to do it.

From the school website, if it lets me share the link. A little old (2018) but shows stats from a few years. RPFT is the overwhelmingly biggest drop rate, then land nav. 12 mile, patrols, and medical rounding out the typical top 5 with RTT making a surprise #2 finish in 2018. www.benning.army.mil/infantry/artb/Student-Information/content/PDF/ARTB%20Ranger%20Course%20Information.pdf

@@shadowswimmer8361 thanks the link worked. I guess in my mind I didn’t consider the fitness test as the biggest NO-GO. If you can’t PT why are you showing up? Those trends look about right. Confirms my suspicion that land nav is being overlooked as a skill that needs worked on. The ruck should wash out more than the land nav.
@shootingbricks8554

@@chriswhite8852 a lot of times units send Soldiers who minimumly pass the RPFT. However, in Ranger School, you will conduct the RPFT while tired and sore and those who minimumly passed will be in trouble. Better exceed the minimum standards.

Your 'sack must be appropriate for the task (e.g. padded shoulder straps, 4 fingers wide), be packed correctly and be adjusted to fit you properly. Lots of great rucking advice if you search Gritty's channel. I'm quite tall with a long back so it can be tricky for me to find a 'sack with hipstraps that sit in the right place (most end up more like titstraps) so I go for 'sacks with an adjustable back.
@piercemyers4318
@piercemyers4318 Жыл бұрын
If your shoulders are hurting I'd recommend taking a look at your ruck's load bearing straps, plenty of people I know haven't adjusted where they are on the ruck's frame. They tend to have all the weight on their shoulders instead of mostly on their traps, so it makes you prone to injury as you're not using your core and stressing out your shoulder muscles. At least experiment with them to see how it feels, I personally moved them inwards and the ruck feels very comfy

This might sound dumb, but once I put the weights down and focused on cardio endurance and calisthenics I started gaining weight again, presumably because I was hungrier and got more rest. I eat spaghetti everyday, high carb diet is very important for Endurance lol. I’m 5 ft 7, 147lbs. I started lifting when I was 110 lbs, and I’ve stayed at 11% bf the entire time through a clean slow progressive bulk. Lifted weights from 110-140, but I stalled at 140 for a long time, like 9 months. Wasn’t hungry enough… Anyway I say all that to say- cardio will make you hungrier for more calories than the calories you burned- so it isn’t something you should stay away from for a bulk, because it will prob enable you to eat more and bulk better without feeling bloated all the time. Hope that helps? Lol.
