Loving these videos. They're golden and we love the reprise. I learned proper chest dips from John through these videos. Mike Mentzer always wrote fondly of traditional dips, calling it the upper body squat, and I respect his rational writings immensely, but to me it never quite felt right, as it always ended up being mostly triceps to me. Heck, there's even some lats and whatever coming into play as you kinda tilt your upper body backwards when you fatigue and reach failure, removing the chest from the equation entirely. Sure, for that and other reasons it may be a great "general upper body exercise", if you wanna do a finishing movement on an upper day and take your triceps to failure... but you won't hit your chest. And chest is ironically the main reason people do dips! John's advice to put your feet in front of you and flair your elbows a little fixes this contradiction in exercise goals entirely, basically making the dip a steep decline bench press with your shoulders at a safe angle and without your gut blocking the bar, so to speak. You will achieve a great "lower" pec stretch this way. You'll feel it. This technique just makes so much more sense to me. It's the proper chest dip, which is what people are looking for in a dip, despite most people in gyms doing extravagant tricep presses. No wonder why everyone gets turned on to it when John shows them the technique in his videos.

After a few years of being "a spoon" myself.... and wondering where my shoulder aches are coming from, this certainly all makes a lot of sense to me. Wellll, I flipped that spoon upside down today...... and my goodness.... what a difference. People..... this whole lifting weights journey sure is something. It's definitely a marathon and not a sprint. I'm always learning and just love and appreciate this aspect of it. Thank heavens for Mr. Meadows..... wishing the family nothing but the best. Thank you!

I'm a newbie here and was crushed to learn of this man's passing just as I was falling in love with his character as well as content. God bless this man. I had a question I don't know if anyone would care to respond to. I was attempting his style of dips with the elbows flared out and the legs forward and although I was in fact feeling that good stretch in my lower peck, I was also feeling an uncomfortable pulling in my shoulders. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to improve flexibility?
@trevorrisley54192 жыл бұрын
John has always preached to take his advice so long as pathologies aren’t present during the exercise. Meaning: his dips are incredible, but it they’re bringing undue stress to your shoulder capsule, then try modifying the exercise to fit your mechanics or avoid it altogether. So without seeing you perform the exercise, I would say to shorten the range-of-motion or to bring the stretch to the point before you’re experiencing pain. My advice is obviously not applicable if the whole ROM brings you pain; therefore, I would make sure that you have optimal flexibility in your shoulder girdle before proceeding forth with those dips. I can totally relate, because ALL iterations of dips put me through shoulder hell.
@madh162 жыл бұрын
@@trevorrisley5419 Awesome advice, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I will most certainly try this out when I have chest day again in a couple of days. It very well could have been because I was going too deep. Will see on thursday if that was the case.

I always start with bench press, but building up with warmup sets. The first set goes with an empty bar. Then in 3-4 steps increase on weights to my PR, and then going down, in 2 step, then with a close grip with the first step, with a weight would be easy for chest press, but with closed grips press it goes to triceps, only a bit challenging.
