You know what the worst part is? Later in the diner scene with Lars and Ernie, the news reported that the Mayor died due to suffering two heart attacks with the second being fatal. Ernie’s restaurant was condemned and was to be demolished and they reported that he was in hiding. It was also the Eve of the Mayor’s Re-election. Poor Ernie, he put everything in that restaurant and now because a single cockroach, he’s got a dead mayor and a condemned restaurant. He lost everything because of it.

This movie has some truly great writing. They could have launched straight into the old house and the mouse, but this rock-solid base just had to come first. Tell me about it, Ernie didn't know there was a roach in the cigar box and because the mayor died due to heart failure, it made Ernie the city pariah and his restaurant was condemned for demolition. As for Lars, he was offered a large sum of money by Zepco Industries and he declined because he promised his dying father that he would never sell Smuntz String to a big conglomerate. As such, because of that decision, his greedy slut of a wife threw him out.

I love how this goofy comedy about down on their luck quarreling brothers brought together by their family legacy, a fixer-upper inherited mansion/failing string factory, and a mystical mouse actually lowkey has some wholesome themes. All spurred by a cockroach chilling in a cigar box. I would almost call this a grounded-ish fantasy in the realm of movies like Thunderpants, where a kid saves the world by being able to fart all the time. And it has Rupert Grint in it, aka Ron Weasley, but he's not Fart Boy, just supporting role.

So today I learned this wasn't part of Space Jam. As a kid, I have a vague memory of this scene followed by the rest of Space Jam, and I can only assume now (fifteen years later) that the adults of the family decided this was inappropriate for a kid of my age and switched seamlessly to a completely different movie. 1:00 I had an experience like this one time. I used to work at a really old run down place and when I was making food, I noticed something strange about a sirloin steak. It came with mixed veggies and I saw something moving in the veggies. Curious I watched my boss serve it. Then this big guy was there with his family and he was the one who got the steak. Then his kid spotted the bug and stabbed it with a steak knife. The dad was so appalled by what he saw he passed out. This scene scares me now.

This always bothered me. It almost seemed like his dad was screwing Ernie over from beyond the grave. Lars was a bootlicking suck up to his dad and as we saw in the scene prior to this made a lot of dumb decisions that were his own fault. Ernie by contrast simply had no interest in string and sought to pursue his own career and became very successful about it, yet his father never showed him any appreciation for it. And now because of his dads cigar roach everything Ernie built was taken away from him. Ernie has every right to be angry at his dad.
