I kinda disagree that Curly knew what type of person Jimmy was? You could argue that he should have known what kind of person Jimmy was, or that he should have seen the numerous red flags. But I doubt somenody who knew the type of person Jimmy was would have let them in the cockpit after the conversation he had with Curly. The running theme with Curly is that his attempts to do "the right thing" end disasterously for him and the people around him, much like Jimmy, though not for the same reasons. Also, I think the unfortunate reality is that Curly's options for dealing with Jimmy were pretty limited? People like to point out that Jimmy could have been placed in cryo sleep or been physically detained, but considering what we know about Pony Express, I highly doubt they would include a co-pilot into the crew unless said co-pilot was essential for completing the journey. From that POV, trying to appease Jimmy and convince him to stop makes a lot more sense. I won't argue that Curly absolutely failed Anya though.

@Vulgarth1 true, but by first assuring Anya and Jimmy that they can work it out and it will be all ok and then just meekly trying to play off Jimmy talking about crashing the ship even though the cockpit is one of the few places he can lock him out of shows that, in my opinion, Curly has a sort of problem with even acknowledging serious problems that require actions and confrontations, instead trying to smooth them out and play them off with light humor, hoping they will solve themselves. I'd say the dead pixel scene suggests this but again he plays it off as seeing the big picture rather than confronting the problem, if he can ignore it then it's not something he needs to fix.

@conelybiscuit49852 күн бұрын
i think the fact that even his hallucination of Polle calls him out on not caring about Anya would suggest that he felt some extremely repressed pang of remorse, even if only for that one moment. i don't think it's a coincidence that when Polle points it out, he instantly snaps out of his hallucinations and goes right back to factory zero "everything is fine" mode, freezes Curly, and kills himself. i'd even go so far as to say the previous hallucinations could be read more like a self-indulgent *emulation* of guilt, capped off with when he kneels in front of Curly and "apologizes" in a big heroic moment - but then Polle is the one that gets him to actually feel that type of crushing remorse for real, for just a second, and it basically shuts him down mentally in a way the other hallucinations didn't. ultimately i think that's what drives a lot of Jimmy's actions: not necessarily being incapable of remorse, but being unable to process or even acknowledge it once he does something he knows he should feel bad about, necessitating that he just keep running from it. more than anything else i think the cognitive dissonance inherent in that way of thinking is what unmoors him over the course of the game and ultimately leads to his suicide, even if part of him was still convinced he was dying a hero.
@marcelinelansing74752 күн бұрын
@@conelybiscuit4985 Consider too what Polle serves as in Jimmy's mindspace. Is Polle Jimmy's visualization for Anya's unborn baby? In I believe *all* of Jimmy's nightmare sequences, the sound of a crying baby seems to emanate from the Polle statues. The baby you're hunting for in the wombehelit-section is a horse, and the centipede made of horses makes baby sounds I believe. The very first sequence in the game is Jimmy crashing the ship as a means to 'run away' from the baby, only for that baby to corner him at every turn. Or, alternatively, Polle is his mental image of *Anya*? Since 'Anya' and 'unborn child' are basically the same thing for him; a problem he doesn't want to deal with or take responsibility for. On the one hand, that speech at the end could be his psyche wearing the face of the unborn baby, in which case he's not really feeling direct remorse for his actions towards Anya - he's projecting what he believes that unborn baby must think of him, and what kinds of issues it would have with his actions. This interpretation could suggest that he views this unborn baby as more of a human worth caring about than Anya, and in the end is attempting to redeem himself in that child's eyes by sticking to 'no I'm going to fix it though, see watch, I'm a hero'. Or, on the other hand, Polle could be his psyche's visualization of Anya. Consider the big spooky invisible horse section. You can't just run away from that horse, you have to listen for it, stop, and wait for it to pass. This could represent that remorse inside of Jimmy, threatening to tear him to shreds if he doesn't acknowledge it and take time to consider and work through it. If we assume that what you're suggesting is true, and his final Polle is what gets him to feel even a moment of guilt or remorse for Anya herself, then we see that threat come to fruition, as he snaps out of it, returns to his 'I can fix it' schtick, and shoots himself to avoid confronting or considering that lurking guilt. I kinda like this interpretation better, simply because it gives Anya literally any amount of power in the story by being the voice that finally convinces Jimmy to off himself, even if that voice is one that only exists in Jimmy's head. Either way he's still running away from his guilt - it's just a matter of whether or not he ever comes to recognize Anya as a human being worth his remorse.

I think he genuinely cared about Anya, just not enough to confront the shit going on. When he goes to do the psych eval we literally walk past warning signs and the questions are purely "Can yo do your job?" Curly just isn't capable of the human elements of leadership and responsibility. Did someone sleep longer than 5 hours? Everyone is at fault. Was the delivery late? Everyone will have the cost taken from their paychecks." Anya could not say anything sooner because the rest of the crew would be punished, not just Jimmy. Curly could not lock Jimmy in any of the unlockable areas. If Jimmy was placed in the cargo hold Jimmy could destroy the shipment and the company would not be happy. If he was placed in med-bay he could destroy the limited medical supplies or kill himself, either way Pony Express would not be happy and the rest of the crew would be found at fault. If Jimmy was placed in the cockpit then he could just crash the ship. Curly was spineless but ultimately Pony Express, who serves the crew food which may or may not contain human derived gelatin and high levels of quinine (which is used to treat malaria...there shouldn't any mosquitos in a spaceship, which implies that any emergency blood supplies on the ship contain bloodborne illness necessitating a need for quinine) that they have to pay for either out of pocket or have it be deducted from their paychecks. The crew were a collection of losers of society that lost at life and Pony Express came out the winners.

It took me a while to get this but "take responsibility" has multiple meanings. In Jimmy's twisted mind he thinks he needs to TAKE responsibility (from Curly) And that has a lot of unsettling implications Because you could apply it to what he did to Anya as well

A major thing players hate about characters like Ted Farro and Jimmy (and maybe Solas from Veilguard) is that they cause the story’s big problem… but don’t lose any of their power, and continue to make things EVEN WORSE. But the key thing is that they STILL don’t have any control of the situation. If you've experienced failure at any point in your life, this kind of character will set you off on how they somehow avoid consequences.

in response to Pat's point about them being trillions of miles off-course, wouldn't hitting *anything* at multiple AU a minute have just absolutely atomized the ship? it takes light over 8 minutes to cross a single AU, so they're apparently going several times the speed of light. at that point they're going so fast that the entire solar system would've been significantly rearranged by their impact, let alone the characters onboard. even going at a fraction of that speed would've blown up a lot more than just Curly and parts of the ship. so personally i think it's just the devs having a fairly loose sense of scale rather than something you're supposed to take as hard confirmation that Curly is screwed. i don't think you're supposed to know for sure either way, which i think is arguably more painful and just further puts you in Curly's shoes (or, uh, stump bandages) as he's just terrified and unsure if he'll wake up.
@MrTrebleCleff2 күн бұрын
The fact we don't have a general layout of the ship prolly waylays any questions, because I imagine if you presume the cockpit is at or near to the "bow" of the craft, and the cargo hold is laterally right behind it. Hitting that tiny rock would have vaporised the entire forward section and sent the entire cargohold collapsing like an accordion onto and over everything in between. Instead it's Foam foam and More Foam. Damn that's some good foam.
@HavikLaosBoi692 күн бұрын
The bigger fucked up thing about Jimmy choosing to save Curly is obviously to serve Jimmy's self perception of "redemption" and "accepting responsibility" but in a way besides the obvious of saving an already hopeless person, he instantly negates it on account that not only did he take the easy way out to not ever have to confess a single thing to the public, but also the sole person he saves would be the one person who is not physically able to speak and spread that dirt to still, at the end of the day, save his own ass of public perception even when he's fucking dead anyways. His one final act, and he still couldnt do any good if not sunk it deeper in the net negative of responsibility. Idk if the devs had also intended that as just an extra layer of Jimmy being so fucked up, but given his character it genuinely wouldnt be surprising.

I really thought Anya was gonna be the player character, something about the trailer gave me that feel
@marcelinelansing74752 күн бұрын
I feel like that's intentional. I stand by the idea that Anya being the first character to be given a name and face (by way of her ID in the opening segment) is meant to suggest to the player 'This is your protagonist, this story is about her'. I mean it makes sense - she's the most sympathetic character in the scenario, she's who you'd expect to play in a horror game, and the game asks you to really consider the situation she's been thrust into by questioning the integrity of the PoV character. It's just made more effective by forcing you to consider the implications. You're no longer relying on the narrative to show you *exactly* how horrible things are for Anya, which runs the risk of being schlocky or overwrought - you instead see how horrible the monster in the game is, and fill in the blanks for how fucked up everything is for her.

I read the dialog aloud with a friend as we went through it, without knowing the story, and I chose a hesitant weak voice for Anya a lot like Angela Orozco from Silent Hill 2, based on her resemblance to Shelley Duvall. To slightly play Devil's Advocate for Curly, what exactly could he have done about Jimmy? They're stuck in the space equivalent of a U-Haul truck for 8 months, it's not like he can just lock him up in a brig or his own room. At worst, he could throw him in one of the cryo-pods, but that's just a stop-gap until they eventually land, and he'll still need to explain everything afterwards, not to mention dealing with Anya's pregnancy the whole flight. All that said, I'm not defending Curly; anything would have been better than him doing LITERALLY NOTHING.

To really understand how fucked Jimmy sees the world and other people, just look at the section with the invisible horse that can only notice you when you move. Jimmy tries to get some mouthwash (something he wants) and this invisible horse tries to stop him. Now Anya, to protect herself from jimmy, sleeps with the motion activated pony express mascot positioned in such a way that if someone were to come by it would sound and alert her that someone (Jimmy) was near. Jimmy in the invisible horse section personifies the motion activated pony express mascot as a huge threat and impediment to his desires... that desire being to get mouthwash and ALSO to rape Anya. Yes, He doesn't even view his desire to rape Anya through any other lens outside of how it affects him. In his mind the motion activate pony express mascot (the invisible horse) is unfairly harassing him and by extension places his shit idea to use mouthwash as a disinfectant on daisuke and his desire to rape Anya as morally equivalent. They are equivalent as they are simply both something he wants to do. Edit: notice how that section starts with the words "Be Quite". is that something he has to do, or something he said to anya?

See, we’re not given enough context to what’s been happening with the crew, but depending on what’s what, it shows how badly Curly messed up. Curly has been friends with Jimmy for a long time, but how well did he really know Jimmy? Had Jimmy done abhorrent things in the past? Has Jimmy just been getting into trivial trouble back on Earth? Is this the worst thing Jimmy has ever done? When Curly says “he’s got through worse”, is he just trying to calm Jimmy down, or is that actually true? Or does Curly just think that this situation isn’t as bad as other situations Jimmy’s got through? Furthermore, did Jimmy actually pull through those situations or did Curly just bail him out all the time? Has Curly just been completely oblivious to certain things/signs or did he just choose not to tackle it? Did he see it as problematic or just his friend messing around? Did Curly use his position to help Jimmy get the job or did Jimmy have to go through a standard recruiting process and Curly just recommend him? How much did Anya tell Curly? Was she trying to be subtle or did she outright state what Jimmy had done? When exactly did Anya tell Curly about Jimmy? How long had that been going for? They’ve been a crew for some time and, as far as we know, there’s been no problems such as this prior. If this is only a recent development, what triggered it? Was Curly going to just support Jimmy or was he actually going to do something to help Anya? How long would it take for Curly to make a move on the situation? Was Curly just processing things or was he sitting on his hands? Did Jimmy’s behaviour sound ‘normal’ or did Curly have to recontextualise his relationship with Jimmy and his past troubles? Lots and lots of questions, which leaves Curly in a grey area. Depending on all these different questions, either Curly has enabled Jimmy’s bad behaviour, is a terrible person, and is rather strongly to blame, or Curly was naive/oblivious and missed the signs because a) Jimmy is his best friend and/or b) he really just never saw anything. As far as I can see from what is shown: - Curly genuinely cares about everyone. He feels the crew is his responsibility. - Curly already wasn’t in a good mental state, and was just giving the ‘correct’ answers to his psyche eval. He may not have passed if he was being more honest. He was suffering from insomnia too. - Curly is constantly said to be a good captain, which we know because Jimmy hears it all the time and he’s jealous of it. - Apparently, if you look closely at the letter, Curly was getting a promotion while everyone else was getting fired (which is weird if Pony Express is shutting down). - With his fraying mindset, Curly felt guilty about everyone and informed the crew of the situation, despite the fact he was told to only tell them towards the end of the trip. - Jimmy is a professional gaslighter and twists Curly’s words during the birthday party. Curly doesn’t really fight back and just takes all of Jimmy’s verbal abuse. Jimmy does the same exact thing when Curly goes to confront him about Anya, and gets into Curly’s head so that when he suggests murder-suicide to run away from his sins, Curly has a lapse of judgement and lets him walk away. Jimmy knows Curly is struggling mentally and uses that to turn on him, and blame him for things. If this is how their relationship is, Jimmy is a toxic friend that Curly puts up with because “he knows/understands him” so he can ‘fix’ him. - Curly and Anya have their dead pixel talk in the evening, the next day Anya tells Curly she’s pregnant. When Curly begins to question ‘who’ Anya cuts him off and says “I told you”. - Curly saying he can’t see the dead pixel despite looking for it tells me he genuinely didn’t see the signs of Jimmy’s behaviour. - To me, Curly found out about the assault at max. 2 days before the crash, and either didn’t piece things together somehow or didn’t believe what he had been told. - If this was a repeated thing or a past ordeal (I don’t believe these), that could mean that Anya only made Curly aware of the assault after she found out she was pregnant. I don’t believe Anya would be cordial with someone that would outright ignore her suffering when they’re not in a dire situation like the game setting, as such I don’t believe the time between Anya telling Curly she was assaulted and telling Curly she is pregnant is a big gap. - If this was a recent thing (I believe this), that would mean that the assault had to have taken place after everyone was made aware they were being made redundant (6 days before the crash). Jimmy lost the one good job he had, and felt like his friend was abandoning him and going away to do better things, and it threw him off the deep end. - Anya was focused on their trip taking 8 months because it meant she’d be showing signs of pregnancy, and end up having the baby towards the end of the voyage. I feel like the 8 months date wouldn’t be a focus in the story if she would have the baby earlier than that, which is why the assault must have happened recently. In addition, Anya ended up taking her life 5-6 months after the crash with no visible signs of pregnancy, so, again, the assault must have happened recently, else she already be showing signs. - I’m saying all of this, but it could be possible she was being assaulted before this but just never got pregnant before. Just the most recent assault got her pregnant. - Curly confronted Anya 1 day before the crash because he thought she wanted to shoot herself with the gun because she lost her job, not even thinking about the assault. Either Curly didn’t understand what Anya was telling him, or he just pushed Anya telling him she was assaulted by Jimmy to the back of his mind. He was genuinely concerned about her mental health, stating that he should have made sure she also got psyche evals. He seemed genuinely shocked about her pregnancy until Anya reminded him that he already knows the culprit. - Anya hid the gun so Jimmy couldn’t get it. Jimmy already knew where Anya hid the gun. I don’t think Anya told Curly where she hid the gun. - Anya told Jimmy she was pregnant, and Curly wanted to be there when she was going to, most likely to mediate rather than pick a side. - Curly asked Anya if Jimmy was angry after he was told she was pregnant which might indicate that he knows Jimmy to be unstable. - When Curly was trying to talk down Jimmy, it could be he was just trying to calm an unstable person they’ll be stuck with for 8 months or he genuinely believed what he was saying. - Pony Express’ solution would have been to shoot Jimmy dead, something Curly was never going to do. - Pony Express skimped out on a lot of things, so putting Jimmy on ice in the Cryo chamber might have been detrimental, as the crew would be down a co-pilot, and we don’t know how necessary one is (also they’d have pay docked). - Having only 4 pods isn’t an issue because Curly, as captain, probably would agree to go down with the ship. - For some reason, on Day 0, Anya’s employee card can be found in the cockpit cupboard near the emergency keys. If that’s not just a little Easter egg, why is her employee card there? It could mean Curly was planning to do something with it, and it would have been placed there the same day Anya told him she was pregnant. Man, I’m just yapping. I yap a lot when I get invested in things. Sorry. I can’t hate Curly because I know there are people in real life who genuinely have no idea their close friend or family was capable of such evil, until it happens, and even then they still struggle to come to terms with it. And everyone always badgers them with “but how didn’t you see signs!? You’ve known them for [X] years/ all your life!”, when they honestly never picked up on things. Either they were oblivious to signs or the perpetrator hid them well enough that they wouldn’t notice, or just never displayed anything at all. TL;DR - Curly isn’t a saint but isn’t evil. We don’t know enough to fully say, but he’s grey. He’s a well meaning and genuinely a ‘good guy’, that does try (perhaps not his best though). He seems to want to avoid conflict and resolve things without too much issue. He’s a victim of Jimmy, and at the end of the day, Anya forgave Curly of his wrongdoings. We’ve no idea what Curly was planning to do or how he’s feeling after the accident other than sad and scared.

I have a theory that Jimmy and Curly are ex-military, at one point they mention something along the lines of "is this what peace is" plus their comments about having done worse in the past make me feel like they are veterans who were drafted and probably did some awful stuff. Curly was able to return to society for the most part, his fears about his place in life notwithstanding, but Jimmy struggled a lot more. I feel like that context helps explain how much they prioritize each other over everyone else.

When it comes to Curly's talk with Jimmy, I think it was a little bit of both. If he was just trying to calm down Jimmy, I don't think he would have let him into the cockpit by himself. So I think there was definitely a part of him that was holding onto hope that Jimmy could change, however naive/delusional it was.
