He's just a miserable guy who was already going through a psychological spiral, now he's hiding a secret that has life-changing implications for the people he's responsible for. @SinnerBeta

@Vulgarth1 true, but by first assuring Anya and Jimmy that they can work it out and it will be all ok and then just meekly trying to play off Jimmy talking about crashing the ship even though the cockpit is one of the few places he can lock him out of shows that, in my opinion, Curly has a sort of problem with even acknowledging serious problems that require actions and confrontations, instead trying to smooth them out and play them off with light humor, hoping they will solve themselves. I'd say the dead pixel scene suggests this but again he plays it off as seeing the big picture rather than confronting the problem, if he can ignore it then it's not something he needs to fix.

To really understand how fucked Jimmy sees the world and other people, just look at the section with the invisible horse that can only notice you when you move. Jimmy tries to get some mouthwash (something he wants) and this invisible horse tries to stop him. Now Anya, to protect herself from jimmy, sleeps with the motion activated pony express mascot positioned in such a way that if someone were to come by it would sound and alert her that someone (Jimmy) was near. Jimmy in the invisible horse section personifies the motion activated pony express mascot as a huge threat and impediment to his desires... that desire being to get mouthwash and ALSO to rape Anya. Yes, He doesn't even view his desire to rape Anya through any other lens outside of how it affects him. In his mind the motion activate pony express mascot (the invisible horse) is unfairly harassing him and by extension places his shit idea to use mouthwash as a disinfectant on daisuke and his desire to rape Anya as morally equivalent. They are equivalent as they are simply both something he wants to do. Edit: notice how that section starts with the words "Be Quite". is that something he has to do, or something he said to anya?

I find Curly to be such an interesting character. How his lack of action puts him into a state where he can't take any action at all. How he is now forced to watch as his decision (or lack of) make everything turn terrible. To see how Jimmy, a person he clearly sees as a friend and thinks can change for the better, be revealed as the monster he truly is. To suffer the same abuse as Anya, (There is already some verbal abuse from Jimmy before the crash, best example being the birthday party) . And then to watch Anya eventually overdose. And probably worst for him, is he can't do anything to take responsibility, to even talk and apologize , or just do anything to atone for his fuck up. While Jimmy has all the power, and uses none of it take responsibility. And instead uses it to run away from it. Its probably why i still feel a semblance of pity for Curly.

i think the fact that even his hallucination of Polle calls him out on not caring about Anya would suggest that he felt some extremely repressed pang of remorse, even if only for that one moment. i don't think it's a coincidence that when Polle points it out, he instantly snaps out of his hallucinations and goes right back to factory zero "everything is fine" mode, freezes Curly, and kills himself. i'd even go so far as to say the previous hallucinations could be read more like a self-indulgent *emulation* of guilt, capped off with when he kneels in front of Curly and "apologizes" in a big heroic moment - but then Polle is the one that gets him to actually feel that type of crushing remorse for real, for just a second, and it basically shuts him down mentally in a way the other hallucinations didn't. ultimately i think that's what drives a lot of Jimmy's actions: not necessarily being incapable of remorse, but being unable to process or even acknowledge it once he does something he knows he should feel bad about, necessitating that he just keep running from it. more than anything else i think the cognitive dissonance inherent in that way of thinking is what unmoors him over the course of the game and ultimately leads to his suicide, even if part of him was still convinced he was dying a hero.
@marcelinelansing7475
@marcelinelansing7475 Ай бұрын
@@conelybiscuit4985 Consider too what Polle serves as in Jimmy's mindspace. Is Polle Jimmy's visualization for Anya's unborn baby? In I believe *all* of Jimmy's nightmare sequences, the sound of a crying baby seems to emanate from the Polle statues. The baby you're hunting for in the wombehelit-section is a horse, and the centipede made of horses makes baby sounds I believe. The very first sequence in the game is Jimmy crashing the ship as a means to 'run away' from the baby, only for that baby to corner him at every turn. Or, alternatively, Polle is his mental image of *Anya*? Since 'Anya' and 'unborn child' are basically the same thing for him; a problem he doesn't want to deal with or take responsibility for. On the one hand, that speech at the end could be his psyche wearing the face of the unborn baby, in which case he's not really feeling direct remorse for his actions towards Anya - he's projecting what he believes that unborn baby must think of him, and what kinds of issues it would have with his actions. This interpretation could suggest that he views this unborn baby as more of a human worth caring about than Anya, and in the end is attempting to redeem himself in that child's eyes by sticking to 'no I'm going to fix it though, see watch, I'm a hero'. Or, on the other hand, Polle could be his psyche's visualization of Anya. Consider the big spooky invisible horse section. You can't just run away from that horse, you have to listen for it, stop, and wait for it to pass. This could represent that remorse inside of Jimmy, threatening to tear him to shreds if he doesn't acknowledge it and take time to consider and work through it. If we assume that what you're suggesting is true, and his final Polle is what gets him to feel even a moment of guilt or remorse for Anya herself, then we see that threat come to fruition, as he snaps out of it, returns to his 'I can fix it' schtick, and shoots himself to avoid confronting or considering that lurking guilt. I kinda like this interpretation better, simply because it gives Anya literally any amount of power in the story by being the voice that finally convinces Jimmy to off himself, even if that voice is one that only exists in Jimmy's head. Either way he's still running away from his guilt - it's just a matter of whether or not he ever comes to recognize Anya as a human being worth his remorse.

29:00 In my opinion the really bitter thing about the ending, and what signifies it as a well-crafted tragedy, is that him ending himself provides no solace or catharsis. If anything it should make you even more resentful because he escaped responsibility yet again, thinking he was being an hero, or at least "doing the right thing" to make amends. That is his final moment, spent enjoying what is in his mind a victory and taking the easy way out, never having learned a thing, never acknowledging that the things he did can never be undone or made right.

Is evil something you are? Or is it something you do? My pain is constant and sharp and I do not hope for a better world for anyone. In fact, I want my pain to be inflicted on others. I want no one to escape. But even after admitting this-and I have countless times, in just about every act I’ve committed-and coming face-to-face with these truths, there is no catharsis. @Daniel_Lancelin
@Daniel_Lancelin Ай бұрын
I would actually switch those definitions; what you refer to as "pure" evil is essentially someone losing their inner battle and surrendering to sin, because they do not believe in a better version of themselves. Such characters are likeable because we can usually sympathize with the motives that turned then down the wrong path, and we want them to see the error of their ways. Jimmy's brand of evil - a more delusional and narcissistic kind - is much more absolute (I would even say Satanic in a sense), because he literally never even has that conversation with himself. He _can't_ feel guilt or repentance for his actions because his ego has convinced him that he was _in the right,_ both morally and pragmatically, for doing what he did. That's the kind of evil that can *never* be forgiven. (Disclaimer: if my theological phrasing is disagreeable to any atheists/agnostic readers, I do believe biblical concepts can still be applicable to a secular worldview if taken metaphorically. I'm not trying to be preachy - it's just the framework I use for discussing and rationalizing topics like morality.)

It's implied Jimmy had some "Trouble" back on Earth. Yeah, I'll bet he did. Curly brought him out there knowing what kind of dude he was and put everyone in danger. This phenomenon is known as a Missing Stair that everyone just accommodates until they finally do something unforgiveable. At which point it's far too late for the victims. Ugh. This game is so good.

I kinda disagree that Curly knew what type of person Jimmy was? You could argue that he should have known what kind of person Jimmy was, or that he should have seen the numerous red flags. But I doubt somenody who knew the type of person Jimmy was would have let them in the cockpit after the conversation he had with Curly. The running theme with Curly is that his attempts to do "the right thing" end disasterously for him and the people around him, much like Jimmy, though not for the same reasons. Also, I think the unfortunate reality is that Curly's options for dealing with Jimmy were pretty limited? People like to point out that Jimmy could have been placed in cryo sleep or been physically detained, but considering what we know about Pony Express, I highly doubt they would include a co-pilot into the crew unless said co-pilot was essential for completing the journey. From that POV, trying to appease Jimmy and convince him to stop makes a lot more sense. I won't argue that Curly absolutely failed Anya though.

@@Birthday888 "I highly doubt they would include a co-pilot into the crew unless said co-pilot was essential for completing the journey." The Pony Express is not a company exactly a good example of practical and efficient organization. The world-building of Mouthwashing is that this whole thing was a shit show from top to bottom, the company created an environment where this sort of thing can happen (no locks on the sleeping quarters). Curly's dismissive attitude allowed his abusive friend to get away with repeatedly assaulting another crew member. No one else has the authority to stop him, and the literal only tool the company gives the captain for dealing with crew unrest is a fucking gun. Also Curly was an enabler and failed to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY as the captain. He was literally the only person with the authority and power to actually do anything about Anya's situation. The game makes a big thing in narrative and game play (with the code scanner) about how the structure of the company ensures that just about everything in the ship is locked behind a code scanner that the Captain is the only one allowed to access, and this includes safety equipment that in a normal situation would require urgent access like a fire axe. The Captain is the only member of the crew with access to everything and everyone else has to scrape for any agency that they can get (Swansea keeps the fire axe once Curly gives it to him and never lets go of it). Curly absolutely knew what kind of person Jimmy was, but he also was his friend, and he valued that friendship over holding Jimmy responsible for anything that he does until the point that Jimmy forced himself into the Captains seat, and he was powerless to do anything. Here's the thing about people like Jimmy. People who are capable of evil things are also capable of being loved and cared for and having good friends who want to support them. My read is that Curly felt sorry for Jimmy because he knew he was a troubled person with no place back on Earth, and he felt like he needed to make sure Jimmy had a place to belong. People will often make excuses for their familial relations who end up being dirtbags, because "that's , we grew up together." Also, if a co-pilot was essential they could've promoted Daisuke. Daisuke is a fuck-up, but he listens to instruction and is worlds better than someone they knew had violent destructive tendencies. It is implied that Jimmy originally went to the cockpit to get the gun in the captain's locker, and decided to crash the ship because he couldn't find it. Because Anya hid it. Because she knew he would go for it. Because Jimmy is shit.

Something that really strikes me about Anya is how she's sold to us as a failure of a nurse, yet she's kept Curly alive for months on first aid kits, painkillers and a prayer. But she struggles to force the pills on him - as would many people prone to nausea due to pregnancy or recently traumatized by SA - and that's all the crew and a portion of the playerbase make of her. She's also competitive and has a pretty funny sense of humor, if you look at the environment clues. And she cares *a lot* about her desired line of work, even if she's unsuccessful at it. But at the end of the day, the need to fawn at her abuser who is now in charge as well as her dire fucking circumstances wear on her and transform her into what we see in the post crash segments. And all because of fucking Jimmy. And Curly, friendly puppy ass enabler that he is.

When he goes to do the psych eval we literally walk past warning signs and the questions are purely "Can yo do your job?" Curly just isn't capable of the human elements of leadership and responsibility. Because as much as people like to talk about Curly's inaction to deal with Jimmy, I highly doubt that the cost cutting Pony Express would include a co-pilot positoin onto the Tulvar unless it was almost impossible for a pilot to regularly make the journey by themselves. It's clear he's not a confrontational guy to begin with. He goes to Jimmy like, 'Is this true? Did you do that?', and Jimmy's response kills him. When he says 'fix it' to Anya, I think he's still in the state of mind that there must be some kind of misunderstanding, that it can't be true. He's going to 'fix it'. He's going to talk and figure it out. But he can't. Because it happened, and the friend he thought was just a fuck up was actually a monster, and what happened to Anya because of Curly couldn't be 'fixed'. He couldn't make it better. If you want to see just how fucked from the start everyone on the ship was just look at the Pony Express posters that ultimately say "Did someone do something wrong? Everyone will be punished. Did someone sleep longer than 5 hours? Everyone is at fault. Was the delivery late? Everyone will have the cost taken from their paychecks." Anya could not say anything sooner because the rest of the crew would be punished, not just Jimmy. Curly could not lock Jimmy in any of the unlockable areas. If Jimmy was placed in the cargo hold Jimmy could destroy the shipment and the company would not be happy. If he was placed in med-bay he could destroy the limited medical supplies or kill himself, either way Pony Express would not be happy and the rest of the crew would be found at fault. If Jimmy was placed in the cockpit then he could just crash the ship. Curly was spineless but ultimately Pony Express, who serves the crew food which may or may not contain human derived gelatin and high levels of quinine (which is used to treat malaria...there shouldn't any mosquitos in a spaceship, which implies that any emergency blood supplies on the ship contain bloodborne illness necessitating a need for quinine) that they have to pay for either out of pocket or have it be deducted from their paychecks. Jimmy being the protagonist of the game should not detract from the fact that the story is not truly about him. As a narcissist, he believes he is the central figure of the story, but he is more a force of nature if anything. He is the Black Plague, he is Mount Vesuvius, he is the ice burg, the slasher, the xenomorph. A walking irredeemable tragedy who could have never amounted to anything but pain and grief for others. The horror comes in realizing that there _was_ a human being who was capable of stopping him, but didn't. Curly doomed his crew to Jimmy, as surely as Dennis Nedry doomed Jurassic Park to the dinosaurs. There is a reason we end on his perspective. Curly is the focus. Curly is a warning. Fun fact: Polle's speech text at the end is the same color as Anya's. The character that literally calls Jimmy out for putting his guilt regarding Curly on a pedestal above everyone else, has the same text color as Anya. That can't be a coincidence. p.s One of the lines the Polle statue can say ends with "I love who I'm becoming, do you?"

in response to Pat's point about them being trillions of miles off-course, wouldn't hitting *anything* at multiple AU a minute have just absolutely atomized the ship? it takes light over 8 minutes to cross a single AU, so they're apparently going several times the speed of light. at that point they're going so fast that the entire solar system would've been significantly rearranged by their impact, let alone the characters onboard. even going at a fraction of that speed would've blown up a lot more than just Curly and parts of the ship. so personally i think it's just the devs having a fairly loose sense of scale rather than something you're supposed to take as hard confirmation that Curly is screwed. i don't think you're supposed to know for sure either way, which i think is arguably more painful and just further puts you in Curly's shoes (or, uh, stump bandages) as he's just terrified and unsure if he'll wake up.
@MrTrebleCleff
@MrTrebleCleff Ай бұрын
The fact we don't have a general layout of the ship prolly waylays any questions, because I imagine if you presume the cockpit is at or near to the "bow" of the craft, and the cargo hold is laterally right behind it. Hitting that tiny rock would have vaporised the entire forward section and sent the entire cargohold collapsing like an accordion onto and over everything in between. Instead it's Foam foam and More Foam. Damn that's some good foam.
@Slasher9485
@Slasher9485 Ай бұрын
@@MrTrebleCleff My guess is that it wasn't a MASSIVE rock that they hit. But a rock big enough to cause a mass amount of damage. The way I see it is they hit the rock face first, rock EXPLODES on impact due to the speed of it getting hit and I assume catches fire on impact just based on friction. The bits of the rock splinter and causes damage all over the ship, hence why foam is everywhere. Swansea makes it very clear that if any of the foam patches are popped its a hull breach and they're all fucked. So the way I see it and the way Pat has shown it was Jimmy has them hit rock, Curly tries to stop it, they hit it anyway, and that one impact has them going adrift from their intended path and the speed keeps going because the ship has nothing really reducing its speed in space. Cause remember, Jimmy STEERED THE SHIP into the rock, obviously putting it off course with that alone. At speeds like that I'd imagine even moving a hundredth of a degree could get you lost in space.
@djinnJuice-x-
@djinnJuice-x- Ай бұрын
Oh, I never thought about this Part of the wacky aspects of FTL travel is that any true FTL object hitting something means that the impact will have the energy of an atomic bomb with the same mass A freighter like this probably would have shattered on the atomic level in the most violent manner possible

I don't know. At this point hearing Woolie talk about this with both Pat and EyePatchWolf, and reading the comments. The thing that's really bothering me is just how easy it is for everyone to dunk on a Jimmy or a Curly, but it feels like no one is openly engaging with the ways they may have been a Jimmy or a Curly. The way men tend to almost internally be grateful that a Jimmy exists because they can point to one and say "well, at least i'm not that bad" Like, on one hand it's great to see people not feeling obliged to defend a character even when they're directly in their shoes. But on the other hand, to play directly as both of those characters and still view them as people completely outside of yourself feels like it's missing something.

To slightly play Devil's Advocate for Curly, what exactly could he have done about Jimmy? They're stuck in the space equivalent of a U-Haul truck for 8 months, it's not like he can just lock him up in a brig or his own room. At worst, he could throw him in one of the cryo-pods, but that's just a stop-gap until they eventually land, and he'll still need to explain everything afterwards, not to mention dealing with Anya's pregnancy the whole flight. All that said, I'm not defending Curly; anything would have been better than him doing LITERALLY NOTHING.

I think the worst part is that- in the "ideal" situation where Jimmy is put in, say, a cryo-pod... do people forget that he's a member of the crew who has an important function that still has to be fulfilled while he's out of commission? Maybe, MAYBE Curly can be the sole pilot, but I get the feeling there's two chairs in that cockpit for a reason and they don't just have the position on payroll for shits and giggles.

I read the dialog aloud with a friend as we went through it, without knowing the story, and I chose a hesitant weak voice for Anya a lot like Angela Orozco from Silent Hill 2, based on her resemblance to Shelley Duvall. I realized I had chosen perfectly by the end of it. (Daisuke is the other character who has a pretty obvious intended speaking style. He sounds like a surfer dude.)

The Company will probably send a ship to investigate the disappearance of the Tulpar for a few reasons: 1) This was one of their last manned ships, it represents a significant investment and PR loss if it isn't found and blame isn't shifted away from the Company, and a massive insurance liability. The sensationalism and mystery of "the last Pony Express Freighter" would cause some public pressure. 2) The ship likely is programmed to drop buoys in emergency situations to guide salvage and rescue (emphasis on salvage) operations to recover lost cargo and justify an insurance payout (any insurance provider would DEMAND these for coverage) 3) The damage to the ship was not enough to disable all systems, so likely some form of communications is still working, even if it's just the emergency buoy recording the last know trajectory and speed of the Tulpar It's very likely that the insurance investigator assigned has a decent chance to find the Tulpar, and there is a good chance Curly will survive.

As Anya describes the mouthwash, the sugar content makes any benefit it could provide ineffective. Curly, Daisuke, and Swansea all are good people and supportive people with heavy flaws. but that is their sugar content. Curly should have taken charge rather than placate the monster. Swansea could have been the rock of experience for the crew but has let anger and bitterness consume him, Daisuke is kind of a weird alternative, the others are tainted by experience, he is worthless due to his inexperience, He doesn't know engineering and has the interpersonal skills of a 4 year old. Anya though feels closer to the rubbing alcohol. She was in over her head from the word go and the misuse of her resulted in nothing but pain and longing because she was never given the chance to grow and be useful with her own skils. Jimmy is the disease that the sugar of Curly's weakness helpped thrive. It is all a failure of cultural hygiene. Curly can't deal with the burn of responsibility so becomes complicite in evil by giving it what is needed to grow. Swansea knows better but has given up on taking care of himself and just falls back into the sickness of his past. Daisuke doesn't know any better and just sits there watching the world burn. Anya though is going through the emotional and mental version of Curly's torture, unable to take care of herself and at the mercy of caretakers that refuse to treat her suffering seriously if not just blame her for it.
