CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) passionately watches the television as Tommy (Tommy Morrison) wins the fight and takes the championship.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Touted upon its release as the finale of the Rocky saga, this fifth entry in the long-running series of sports dramas reunites star Sylvester Stallone with John G. Avildsen, director of the Oscar-winning original. Stallone is Rocky Balboa, suffering from career-ending brain damage as a result of his punishing bout with Ivan Drago at the finale of the previous film. Upon their return to Philadelphia, Rocky and his wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), discover they are broke, their fortune squandered by an incompetent accountant. Forced to move back to their working-class neighborhood, Rocky finds that his only asset is the run-down gym willed to him by Mickey (Burgess Meredith, who appears in new flashback sequences). Resisting big money offered to him by Don King-like boxing promoter George Washington Duke (Richard Gant), Rocky becomes a trainer and finds a talented comer in Tommy Gunn (real-life boxer Tommy Morrison, nephew of John Wayne). I think a lot of people hate it because it felt unnecessary. Rocky had won the championship, defended it, avenged Creed, he had earned his happy ending...and then the writer said "lul, no" and took it all away so we could have this movie. It's like when you were a kid and your parents read you stories but then after saying "and they lived happily ever after," they got up to walk out and then said "oh, but then six weeks later The Hero was mugged and is now a paraplegic and his First Love left him for rich actor."

I'm a private wrestling coach; I can't tell you how many times I've experienced this, but it's usually from the parents, not the kids. The sad part is that the hype train never leads them to the promised land. I hated Rocky 5, but now that I'm older, I appreciate it a lot more; it's very accurate.

I like how the different era of boxers have had different attitudes about them over the years. Marciano's era - Very tough, very hard, a lot of heart, respectful Ali's era - Tough, a lot of heart, some negative banter but mostly respectful Tyson's era - Reasonably tough, a bit of heart, mostly disrespectful Modern era - not very tough, a little bit of heart, showmen

I find it hard to believe that Rocky was actually waiting for Tommy to acknowledge him for getting him to the top. After that argument that they had on the street earlier, that shows that Tommy no longer looked up to Rocky and that he was leaving him for good.

It is funny, I've seen all the Rocky Movies scores of times and can quote pretty much all of them verbatim. When I was a kid, and had nobody, I had Rocky. 14 years without missing one day of running - Rocky was running those miles with me. Every time I broke a record in my sport - Rocky was with me. During tough times in grad school, military trainings, and deployments - Rocky was there with me. This scene really hit me hard. I know how it feels to have someone come to you and ask/beg you for help; to take them under your wind and teach them everything they need to succeed; to carry them, bust your butt for them, and be so overjoyed when they get what they wanted; only to have them turn around, stab you in the back, and often lose it all anyway. I've had this happen a few times in my life. Rocky is fundamentally about relationships and sacrifice for others. Some of my favorites scene in the series are in Rocky 2: When Mick comes to the church at 3 AM to show solidarity with Rocky and note: "I think you're a hell of a lot more than that Kid - a hell of a lot! But listen, if you wanna blow this thing - Damn it - I'm gonna blow it with you. You wanna stay here - I'll stay with you. I'll stay and pray." That was Mick sacrificing for Rocky. When Adrian wakes from the coma - Rocky offers "If you don't want me mixin' with Creed no more - we'll make out some other kinda way" to which Adrian replies "There's one thing I want you to do for me - What? - Come here - What? - WIN!" Mutual sacrifice. Rocky is 100% a caretaker - he cares for and elevates Pauly (whom no one else can stand), he cares for and elevates Adrian, Mick, Apollo, little Marie, even Spider freaking Rico - basically every person he encounters - and fortunately, most of them appreciate him for it and reciprocate as best they can. Sadly, caretakers often attract takers and users. Tommy is a typical taker - a selfish person who used others to get what he wants without regard for anyone else - he manipulated Rocky and went through the motions but had no loyalty.. There are plenty of labels for this - narcissists, sociopaths, whatever - but Tommy is one - and such people often seek out caretakers - to use them. Every caretaker I know has had this experience, most more than once. Suffice to say, I wish I'd seen and fully embraced the lesson of Rocky V sooner. I didn't want to see it when it first came out because the plot seemed depressing. I didn't want to see my hero brain damaged and broke - I avoided watching this movie for that reason - but when I finally saw it, all I could think was - damn good lesson - wish I'd learned it sooner.
